i feel love delay

Just watched it on the choob. Even Flea struggled with it! I used to play it in an old band, but we never got it gig worthy. I didn't own a delay & tried to play it similar to Flea, but with a plectrum (learning the double thumb technique could make this so much easier). I'd use a semiquaver (16th) on the delay & just play quavers.
2. I've been listening to Simple Minds' new album "Acoustic", which is a bunch of their classics played on acoustic guitars, but still with electric bass, drum kit & synths (though they might be analogue, so that would count as acoustic).
3. Strangely enough, the tuning of a ukulele is the same intervals as the top 4 strings as a guitar (though like having a capo on the 5th fret), but the 1st string being an octave higher. So if you can play the 6 string that isn't a bass, then you should find the ukulele fairly straightforward. On that note, I'm gonna have a quick blast on mine just now.
4.
That's why I said "best". There must be one that is better than the others or do they all do this job equally well/badly?
If you're wanting to emulate bass guitar or double bass & also synth, then my vote would be a Roli Seaboard. I was torn between getting a Roli Rise or the NI KK88. I went for the latter & the Monark is an excellent Moog Phatty AU. Tried it side by side with a friends Phatty & the sound is virtually identical (I did notice that the cut off around the 1/2 way position is slightly brighter on the Moog, but turning up the Monark's cutoff a smidge matched it for sound). Okay, neither of my choices are technically stand alone, but all you need with it is a MacBook & an interface (both I have). Here's the stand alone seaboard doing some bass... http://youtu.be/Gfej1MAfcWk
5.
No, the arguments against your particular combo are poppycock. Plenty of combos out there where it is awkward or impossible to use a different head. IMO, combos are great as a budget solution if a full modular setup is beyond the reach of a player. However, I just cant really understand why, given the choice, anyone would go for a combo when a class d amp fits in your gig bag pocket.
Then it would make sense if Alex ever makes a combo to have a jack on the cab part so it can be treated as modular and not make something comparable to the combos that you have had the misfortune of using. The Markbass combo was hardly a budget solution (£1100 when I bought it). The same would probably go for a Barefaced combo. Yes, you could pop a class D head in a gig bag pocket, but mine already had an iPad & things in there. So the combo made sense for getting in & out of pub gigs efficiently. I've nothing against modular rigs btw. My next rig is to be modular & possibly a valve head too.
6. Having had a combo (a Markbass 2x10), the arguments against are poppycock. If the amp stops working, I could easily have sat an amp on top of the combo, unplugged the MB head & plugged in another head just as easily had it been a cab alone. For light & loud. An easy one handed carry into the venue, bass over the shoulder & pedalboard in the other hand. Never had a problem not being heard & got many compliments on my sound. If Alex were to make a combo, he'd either have to find an amp manufacturer that would be happy to assist or go in to the amp making business himself.
7.
Thanks, I saw those videos before, but I don't want to tamper with truss rod, after seeing my wife snap the string last night when tuning i realise how fragile they are!
Wives are fragile things. Take care of her.
If you are going to play then you need to replace the strings, new strings transform the bass and make them more exciting to play.
That is true for roundwounds, flatwounds get better with age. I agree with all the rest of your advice though.

amp advice!

Try them all & get the one you like the best. My preference would be the Markbass, but that's because I had an LMII & loved the sound. I'd probably be equally as happy with any of those amps.
9. As good as some of those songs are, there's some that don't even get remotely funky, let alone have an actual funk style bassline. Nothing wrong with a good blues bassline though.
10. Flickr has been doing a fine job for me. The app is not too shabby either. The pic instantly made me think of this song... http://youtu.be/rZov7BvX2Iw
11. I walk into the rehearsal room & plug into whatever is there.
12. Forget the search. Start a new thread. I'm off to New York on 29/11, so this thread interests me too. Already planned to go to Sam Ash, Rudy's & Guitar Centre (which is on the same street as my hotel, as is Steinway Pianos).
13. What Dad says. There's also a sticky about uploading photos in the "Off Topic" section.
14. I think we've managed to get rid of all the unreliable musicians. The band I'm in now, the guitarist started. He's always keen to answer & get things going. The singer has been good that way too. The previous drummer was "on/off", but the new drummer has been to every jam on time.

Routing dilema.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, you could make a simple pedal that houses a signal splitter & 2 channel mixer. Basically a beefed up effects loop. If not, then get an LS-2.
16. Roli Seaboard is probably the best expressive keys for emulating bass.
17.
Designing a set that starts with a bang, dips a little in the middle, then builds to a last number that will leave the audience wanting more, is something that needs thinking about and planning. On the last set you need to keep 2 strong numbers back for an encore. If you're on a curfew, always stop early enough so you can fit the encore in without running over.
I always found if you have the first 2 songs as very strong upbeat tracks, it'll hold the punters. Keep that slow section to nearer 2/3 into the set. Finishing with a great song is a good way to get repeat punters & bookings.

Watts?
I'd liken the whole debate to the difference between petrol and diesel engines. Petrol engines may produce a lot of peak horsepower but produce way less torque than a diesel engine unable to get anywhere near the peak horsepower rating. People seem to be obsessed with horsepower, whereas torque is really a much more telling statistic. (I know much more about engines than I do about sound engineering )
My 220 BHP petrol Honda was much quicker than my brother's 550 BHP diesel Scania, but his Scania could tow 40 tonnes behind it with ease. The Honda would struggle with 4 tonnes.
19. Being a songwriter is just like any instrument. Practice doing it, make a load of crap & then you start to get better at it. A good place to start is the BC monthly composition challenge thingy - Clicky link thing
20. I've played many instruments over the years & the one thing I wish that I could do, is sing. No matter what, unless I'm singing Sex Machine, I just can't hold a tune. Which is really strange, as I have no problem playing by ear. & the answer is yes, I'd still play bass... & keys... & guitar.

Watts?

I used to have a Marshall 2x15 rig back in the 90s. It would blow your head off, but it sounded crap in comparison to the Markbass 2x10 combo that I had. I rememember well the sound of my Markbass. Plenty of volume & easy to keep a clean tone. I now play through whatever is in the rehearsal rooms. Most often it's a Selmer Treble & Bass through an SWR Goliath. Great sound, but clean at volume it does not do. Sounds very different from the Class D Markbass. I prefer the sound of my old rig. Volume is measured in Decibels, not Watts. Watts is one of several factors that determine how many decibels you're gonna get & most of these factors are probably found in the cab.
22. It makes me feel like a man with big wood.
23. Mine's is about 4-5 years old. I gave it a wipe down with some ethanol & it's no longer sticky (well at least not for now, but I'll keep you updated), but the plastic at one side which holds the pin in the handle has crumbled a bit.
24.
Moonrats
Oops, I never even noticed that. I think Autocorrect had a hand in this.
