1. You could use an octave pedal & play up the neck, add some overdrive, or add chorus to thicken the sound up (or even do all 3). I used to be heavy on the fx & use all the above and a couple of moog filters to get some glorious synth sounds. Now I don't use any effects & fill the sound out when the guitarist is soloing by playing chords or changing the style of what I play (depends on how we want it to sound).
2. My grabber is actually fine too. It's the same part as BRX's pics show & also the knob for adjusting the legs. I think the stickiness that I thought I had on the grab had come from my hand after touching the clamp, there's no stickiness on the grab.
3. I got an email back asking for my address so they can send me a replacement GS414B. I thought this was a part, but after googling, it appears to be a full replacement stand! Now that is outstanding service!
4. Mine isn't just the adjustment clamp, it's the grab clamp and the adjustment knob too. Basically every thing that is black plastic. Strings and Things have emailed me & asked me to send a couple of pics & the model number. I'll get them that when I get home from work (which'll be about 3:30). It was a good speedy response to start with. Even if they have a tested solution to getting rid of the stickiness, that would be fine.
5. I've just contacted Hercules via their website, so I'll see if they can help. Having a wee google, apparently rubbing alcohol could be a contender for getting rid of it, but there is the chance it could also make things worse. I have ethanol in the pantry (used to use it on cake decoration), so if Hercules can't help, I'll give it a blast & let you know what it does.
6. I've got a Hercules grab stand (I'm thinking the title may give that part & the next away), it's sat for a bit in a folded up state in the spare room. Now all the black plastic bits are sticky, like they've been sprayed with spray glue. It leaves sticky residue on my hand when I touch it too. Any ideas?
7. This chap's FB page might be of interest for getting your head round mixing, especially in LPX. https://www.facebook.com/groups/electramusic/ Has a lot of good tips & questions from other members too. Edit - Just realised it's actually a closed group, so you'd need to ask to join. His Youtube channel has a lot of good videos too. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIUtwq6jMFYQj2ASOj95TGw
8. Logic's pretty easy to use. It's similar to Reaper, but a lot easier to set up. First thing to do with Logic is open a project (new one) & click "File > Save As" & change "Organise my project as a" from package to folder. This way when you record, every thing will be put into folders within the song folder (like audio files, making them easier to locate).
9.
Sing what you want. The work out how to play what you have just sung.
+1 Unless you sing like me. Then you'd need a fretless bass so you can get the right out of tune note that you can slide to. & in your head you hear different pitches, but the reality is, each note is a few cents different from the last. I tend to work out the scale that the song uses & take it from there. The root note will be in there somewhere, but not always the first note or the most used one either.
10. I'd made a start on last month's track & annoyed that I never got time to get back to it. This month I'm making the time, no bones about it, even if that means cracking some skulls.
11. If it's a 4Ω cab that you've just bought, be careful & check your amp's specs. I've a funny feeling that the 4Ω min load would include the load from the internal speakers (which is probably 8Ω).

Studio Chair

I'm keeping an eye on this thread as I'll be needing a studio chair soon. My wife has stipulated that if I'm to have a studio in the house, the chair can't look like an office chair.
13. How do non wood necks fall in to the debate, such as carbon fibre? My Ibby has a thin wooden neck (they're known for having very thin necks). One thing that it doesn't lack, is low end & I've tried many basses in my time. So unless Ibanez have managed some special magic, I declare shenanigans.
14. I started on keys, got a guitar, then got a bass. Bass was my fave instrument to play for a long time, but as of recent, I've found keys more fun. Whilst I'm a competent enough guitarist, it's never been a more fun instrument to play than bass.
15.
Having had a slight heads-up on this I made a start yesterday afternoon on a rather random improvisation with a scary feel, taking the Blue Poles as time signature! It may not be very popular...
Is it in 8/4?
16. I've yet to vote, but I will be. It's hard to choose just 3 from this lot!
17. Just had a listen to all of the tracks & I think it's gonna be really hard to choose 3. All excellent works!
18. I'm interested in everything that you use to make the track.
19. Cheers chaps. I'm really looking forward to listening to this month's entries. I'm at work just now, but I'm sure I could make some time tomorrow morning. I've updated the instrument list too (Like Monrats does, it's a brilliant idea to know what other folk use). I'll update the fx list later.
20. I really didn't expect to get this done in time, but I persevered & here's my composition... https://soundcloud.c.../mass-emptiness I get a sense of being alone in Brooklyn. The pic itself has a sense of calm & abandonment which I've tried to portray. Instruments used: NI Massive (for the plucky sound) Apple Alchemy (for the pad sound) Apple Retrosynth (for the lead sound)
21.
The definition of a locked boot is where they get you on that. Only old jags and some saloons still have a locked boot, if the seats can be lowered from inside the car or it can be accessed by breaking the glass and removing a luggage cover or parcel shelf its not a locked boot. Been there, been through the FSA bondsman and they just said, read the small print next time.
Policies underwritten by Aviva have a better wording to favour the customer "The item must be placed out of view in a boot, luggage or glove compartment of a securely locked vehicle". However, do check what the theft value limit is. E.G. Barclays' is £1500, but then things can be specified too.
22. Musician - A person who writes, sings or plays music. Musicians could be a collective of people in a band, or it could be someone whom makes music on a single instrument. Someone plonking away on a string might not be classed as music, hence that person may be training to be a musician. Just like someone who rides a bike is a cyclist. If you get on a bike for the first time & fall off, you're not a cyclist until you can actually cycle. If you play an instrument in a band and actually make music, then you are a musician. Bear in mind that you do get bad as well as good musicians. Amateur, semi professional & professional all have no bearing on whether the person is a musician. I play bass, guitar & keys, so I'm a musician. I could be classed as a composer as I compose tunes, but I prefer to be classed as a musician.
23. When I used to play round wound strings, probably one every year. There was always one or two songs with a slapped bassline. Since moving to flat wounds, one D string (which I was gutted at as the strings were only a few years old). Haven't snapped any singe then though.
24. We split the fee too. If one pulls out, then if we give a day's notice, there's nothing to pay. Like Monday just passed, the drummer texted to say that he is unwell. I texted the other guys to see if they wanted to still go, but then texted the rooms to cancel. Sometimes just the 3 of us will go & use it to write stuff & make a noise. If it's non refundable & we don't go, then we all pay.
25. My party piece is playing the bass with my tongue. I don't actually get much in the way of bass sounds, just some buzzing & the occasional shock. But it does put a nice shine on some parts of my bass. Oddly, not many folk are impressed by it. So I'll play Fur Elise & that Bach song that everyone knows (BVW1007).
