At last the day has arrived & I’ve taken delivery of a shiny new Roland Jupiter X. been playing with it for the past hour or so & what a superb bit of kit it is.

It doesn’t have to be the Moog, any decent low pass filter should do. After selling the Moog, I did similar using a Source Audio filter (which are about £100 or so). It’ll give you a very synth like sound. But at the end of the day, the Roli Rise does a far better job & is just as expressive as playing bass.

I used to get my sub bass sound by using a Boss OC3 with just the -1 oct & then into a Moog MF-101 low pass filter. Now I get it with a Roli Rise & Equator. If you’re determined to use bass guitar & FX, then a -1 octave into a low pass filter with the cutoff dialled back a good bit should get you very close. You can add dirt & chorus just after the octaver if you want a thicker sound.

Sorry. If you’re playing festivals, then a 4x12 or two is fine for visual impact, but if it’s in the rehearsal room or a venue, then it’s just an bit overkill. If you’re trying to get a good controlled sound, then it’s not gonna be easy with a 4x12 in the room unless the guitarist is really on the ball. Your chap may well be, but most guitarists I’ve played with are only interested in their sound being the most prominent (not all though, just most).

That’s not an old SR1000, mine’s a 1989 model. Try changing the strings first. I’ve become a fan of flatwound strings. The other thing I did recently was change the pickups & preamp for Aguilar ones. Big change & sounds fantastic.

Me, the keys & the drums (e kit) all go through the PA. Guitarist is determined to use a wee laney 1x10 & being an old rocker, thinks that the sound he wants can only be gotten from using an amp. Ive played with a few guitarists that use Kemper modelling & another who, like me, plays a virtual rig on his laptop & they sound far better.

I’ll have a look at the 732. My previous rig was a Radiovox valve amp into an EBS 4x10. Bit of a large rig for lugging around & about 100 times heavier than the Markbass 2x10 combo I had prior. 😂

I currently play my bass into my laptop & use a virtual rig. This is hosted in Logic & I use my Roli Rise to play synth bass via VSTi synths. I’m getting a hardware synth fairly soon & plan on putting the bass through a pre amp DI & doing away with the laptop. Currently just playing through the studio’s PA. But I’m wanting to get my own set up. I’m thinking about getting the RCF Art 912a & a small mixer, but would I be better opting for the 915? I’ll be using this similar to how I did my previous bass rig. Small-medium gigs using this & taking a line out to the house PA from the mixer on the gigs that have PA.

I used to use a 1x12 combo for smallish gigs & playing at home. I think it was about 40w. Had no struggles, but no really low bass. A decent 2x10 combo or amp/cab ticks a lot of boxes. Can fill a decent sized room & perfectly useable at home. But then, my last rig was a 4x10 with a 200w valve amp. Weighed more than my house & had to be mic’d up if using through PA. No hood for practicing at home, unless the neighbours wanted to hear it too (this was more an issue with the amp rather than the cab). I’ve played through PJB combos & been rather surprised at what they can do with those 5” drivers. Now rigless & go through the PA (or the studio monitors at home).

I’m on the FRFR route. Bass rig is a virtual one on my laptop & goes straight to the PA (via a mixer). At present, I’m just going into whatever PA there is (as long as it’ll handle bass, but I plan on getting a RCF 912 or 915 soon. My main reason for not having a physical bass rig is because I play synth too, so want something that can handle both.

For acoustic instruments, humidity makes a big difference. But for electric instruments it has no effect (unless it’s an old analogue synth). Though if it’s too humid, you could risk electrocution 🤣

What BFM said. I considered building a BFM sub a while back to add to my 2x10, but life got in the way. I use a virtual rig & just DI to the PA. My plan is to get an RCF 915 to put my bass & synth through & the drummer has one too, so could use them for the full band & still add a BFM sub with an amp.

You could always add a sub if you’re after the really low frequencies. Also worth looking at the bass’ pickups, EQ & strings to see what could provide more lows too.
