1.
Don't get confused. Just ask four questions: 1 Do I like the sound? 2 Is it loud enough? 3 Do I like how it looks? 4 Can I afford it? Four yeses and, bingo, you don't need to know how many watts or anything.
+1 Watts don't determine how loud an amp can go. They rate hair driers in watts too & theyre crap for playing bass through (thought they can do the required "trouser flapping" bit).
2. I see you've successfully escaped from the "Please delete" thread. Or is this just a temporary thing???
3. Here's mine... https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/folk-this-bass & what it's become so far... https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/folk-this-more I thought I'd share that noodles can be more than just dried noodles.
4. I recorded a wee bassline 'tother day with this thread in mind. But I've since added a guitar line to it too. I'll upload the bassline for the noodle comp & I'll also link the further works that's came from it.
5. One man's cool is another man's fool. This however, is cool. If you don't agree, then You are fool.
6. Believe it or not, I'm almost finished my track! Took the idea of her diving in, added the sunshine & blue skies & came up that it should be on piano. Got my melody & it's grew arms & legs already. I might spend the next couple of weeks fine tuning it & playing with filters, etc.
7. Cheers buddy. That gives me a lot to think about & I might just save my pennies. Still finding it tough to pull away from the Roli, but the more I think about it, the more I can see me getting much more use from an actual set of keys & a handful more VSTis.
8.
I know what you mean. It took me months to decide to get my S61 and Komplete bundle. It's quite an outlay!
how did you find Komplete Select? If I go for the NI, I'd probably just get the keyboard with the bundle Select & maybe get the cross grade at a later date.
9. It's not a very February pic, is it. Which is a good thing, as it'll hopefully lift everyone's spirits a bit & add some sunshine.
10.
Not to burn a hole in your pocket too much but did you see they're bringing out a Roli 49? RRP around a grand I think.
I saw the 49, but at £949 it's out of my price range. After hearing your composition, I'm still interested in the NI boards & might be interested in the S88. Decisions eh!
11.
There is a iPad / iPhone Rise app, if you want to play around to see if the positioning is good for you
That's Noise. I got that last week. Good for messing about.
12.
I have a Roli 25. I hate it for serious Keyboard playing, and don't use it for that (simple synth lines and Percussion yes), but......... for CC#'S (aftertouch, modulation, key switching, vibrato, articulations and dynamics etc), especially on the more in depth Orchestral Libraries, it's absolutely fantastic. It's own software Instrument is very hit and miss, (well for me, buggy. But I suppose that will change). You need to make sure that your software synths are compatible to get the full effect. I found it works great with Kontakt and Omnisphere 2. (Running it in Cubase 8.5 - If DAW makes any difference).
Cheers. Do you think I'd maybe be wiser to get an actual keyboard (looking at the Akai Advance or NI S61/88) & then getting the Rise at a later date? I know that if I had a keyboard, I'd be playing piano & synth quite a lot. With the Rise, I know that I'm gonna have to look at it for what it is, an instrument that's not a keyboard, but can control many of my VSTs.
13.
Had a play on one and found it really hard to play. My fingers kept sticking to the keys. So unless the previous person has particularly sticky hands I don't think it's for me unfortunately. Shame as I could have used it as a controller for my Kronos
I know what your problem was... Trying to play it like a keyboard. You need a really light touch. I had no probs playing it, just takes a little time to get used to (that's been my 3rd shot on it & the first time I felt it was sticky, but the following 2, I found it fun).
14. Wanted to see if there's any of you that have got a Seaboard & what you think of it. I'm considering getting a Rise 25 & was impressed when I had a play about on it, but as this will be my only set of keys, I'm reluctant to pull the trigger. I'm wanting something to use with Logic Pro X as a controller & I know I have to look at the Seaboard as an instrument first & trying to compare it to a keyboard is like trying to compare bass with cello. As I already have bass & guitar for recording, I think it could be a good option. All opinions are welcome.
15. It's about time you won & what a great song to win with. Congratulations Doug! I'm looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us.
16. When I used pedals, that is what gave me my sound. That analogue grittiness from the moogs sounded awesome, whether that be my bass' dry tone or the sub octave of an OC3. The rig was there just to amplify. Now I don't have fx, I find that my bass still sounds like my bass through most rigs.
17.
Dunno if you're joking or not, or young or not, but it's Edgar Winter, brother of Johnny Winter.
I didn't think it was actually Jimmy Saville, but there's an uncanny resemblance & his dress sense is just as bad.
18.
It's certainly been done before...
Is that Jimmy Savile?
19. Misa make 2 products that may suit you, the Kitara http://misa-digital.myshopify.com/products/kitara & the Tri Bass http://misa-digital.myshopify.com/products/tri-bass There's also many RockBand controllers that have midi too, which could prove to be a very cheap alternative.
20. I had a listen to all the entries & cast my votes earlier. I felt bad for having an entry & not voting last month. Tell ya what... There's some brilliant entries that are very much finished songs. Some proper skills & it was hard to choose just 3!
21.
Inspired by Mrs xgsix, Mrs C has said she will also enter the "Play any old sh*te challenge" should it come to life... and she's never played the bass either, or any other musical instrument.
This could be a really good thing, get the Mrs appreciating bass & learning an instrument too.
22.
I'm happy for it to be used if that's what the people want.
I showed the first page of the thread up to your post to the Mrs last night & she was in kinks for a good 10 mins! So much so, that she said she's gonna enter too (& she's never played the bass).
23. I think the name of it should be "Play any old sh*te challenge". It's accurate for my bass noodling.
24. I've submitted a bass only track in the past to the current comp. It didn't win, but then neither do the majority of my tracks. I enter for the fun of it & the enjoyment of composing. Her's what I did a couple of years ago. i used my effects & it was fun (I don't have any fx other than the one's on my mac & a chorus sat in a drawer). https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/death-of-a-jazz-club I'd be up for a 60 second bass bonk.
25.
So it's basically the "Play any old sh*te challenge" then.
Hahahahahahhahahahahahahaaaa. Sprayed my cuppa everywhere! I'm still laughing at it!
