....the perfect scene for creating some sort of "camp-metal" track
I'm trying to look at both pics together & all I can hear is Immigrant Song. Not a bad song by any means, but a bummer when you're trying to come up with an idea. I might use it as the musical inspiration as it's still linked in with the pics.
Why don't they just fly on the backs of the butterflies? It makes no sense.
You've got it wrong. The giant butterflies stole their boat & left them stranded on the rocks. They did put up a fight & managed to kill 2 of the giant butterflies though. One's on the rocks & the other is downed in the sea. 2 appropriate pics to what December's weather has been. Water & wind.
What a brave thing to admit but a terrible thing to do. How could you enter but not listen to them all or vote, naughty boy.
I know.

Well done guys. I'm determined to get a listen to all the tracks (though a bit too late to vote). Looking forward to next month's pic.

I've not managed to.get time to listen to them all.

If you've not bought any, go & try them. The CMD range are combos, so that rules them out from what you're looking at. Ninja is a signature model for Richard Bona (kinda like the Alain Caron series). These come in the Traveller cab for the 1x12 & the NY cab for the 2x12. The 3 versions of cabs are STD (standard), Traveller & New York. How you choose is first with you ears & then with where you're going to be using it. Are you using this as backline & micing the cab to go through the PA or are you using this as the bass PA? If it's the latter, find the one cab you like the best & get a 2nd identical. Adding a 15 to a 2x10 is a bit like putting different wheels & tyres on the front & back of your car & then every now & then swapping them around. Could be great at one venue & totally irritating at another.

I used to play lekky acoustic through a MarkBass combo & sounded fantastic through it too.

Don't worry Jack, I'll never change mine.

The Mrs got me a NI Kontact Audio 6, so now I can plug my bass in to the Mac. Okay, I bought it for her to wrap & give to me on Xmas Day & she bought her pressie & did the same, but that way we get what we want. A few years ago I bought her a nice Armani watch. 2 days later she asked if I had the receipt & could she take it back (she never wears a watch).

Play of the Day, Basschat Composition Challenge, December...

I'm happy to go into detail of what I do. It'd be great to hear what others do too. There's some great sounds that make me think "How did they do/get that". -

Dad, I love these mini reviews that you do. They give each track something more than what I could think of. I have a couple of favourites, but I listen to each with each review that you do. Then it's down to how the song is perceived. I don't go on finished quality, but from the view of what I think the producer was trying to perceive the image to sound like. Thank you for the wonderful review. The pad sound is more complex than it initially sounds. It's made from 4 different instruments played monophonically to construct each chord & 2 of those have different automation depending on which note is played. I still think the vocal is way too loud & the vocoder automation could have been much better. It was designed for falling asleep to. Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. -
Thanks Dad
There's a particular Hillsong track which we do that annoys me every time I listen to it (name escapes me right now). The bassist seems to think he's a budget Rocco Prestia. It's a constant 16 note groove (in the ungrooviest way possible) all over the scale the whole way through - and to my ear it really doesn't fit and really ruins the recording.
Salvation is here?

I like both. Maybe do a cross genre - Death Hair Metal.

Just joined a second band. A ukelele outfit !!!!

What a great musical year you've had. Hoping 2016 is more of it for you. My Mrs bought herself a ukulele last year (with great intentions). After sitting next to her tin whistle & other great intentions, I decided that I'm gonna learn how to play it & it can go in the car. I'm surprised how easy it is to play (it's a bit like having just the top 4 strings of guitar & putting the capo on the 5th) & two handed tapping on it sounds fabulous. Gonna have to mic it up & get some fx on it. -
Miles Davis' kind of blue is a good starting point. So is Dave Brubeck's time out. Some good vocal jazz from the likes of Diana Krall or Kurt Elling is a good place to get into jazz without wondering why everyone's playing a different song.

Makes Logic's 55gb of content seem tiny! Have fun & I expect to hear some stuff from it in next month's comp!

I was just looking at Komplete Select. If that comes with the controllers, then that makes the controllers a bargain! I need to get saving my pennies.
-
Now that's very nice. Not cheap though at £680, but I suppose you're gonna get a great quality controller. You'll find that most remote keyboards only have weighted hammer action from 73 key upwards. The reason being that most synth players are gonna go for 61 or less & prefer a synth action, whereas those who prefer to play piano are gonna want the longer keybed. I've got a friend who's big into his analogue synths (has a Prophet 08, Analog Keys, Moog Phatty, TE op-1 & DSI MoPho among others) & his go to synth when he starts writing is NI Massive or an Arp 2600 Vst. I'd love to get my hands on Massive. Maybe one day soon.

Synth/filter pedal w/ expression pedal input? IE: Moogerfooger MuRF
xgsjx replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in Effects
Thanks! Do you know of any other LPFs with exp input? Had a browse and not seeing too many. I'm assuming a Crybaby or similar Wah wouldn't have the same effect?
There are some others, such as the Source Audio BEF Pro with the Hot Hand (which is really good for wubs), but it's not much cheaper than the Moog MF-101. There's a few threads on here about different LPFs. Everyone has their own favourite. My advice is to try a few & see what you like the sound of. -
Yeah I was aware of that actually, and I've seen your video already while scouring for demos ! The modular route is actually what I'm doing now and I'm getting some really cool synth tones with octave, various dirts, EQ, chorus and tremolo in sections, I'm just looking for something now that will allow me to create oscillation/'wubs'. Do you recommend a LPF for that perhaps?
I'd put the LPF first on your list & then go for a MuRF. The MuRF can open up a load of ideas & routing though. -

Had a listen to the song you posted. Chris used a Bass MuRf to oscillate notes, but it wasn't used to get the sound the it oscillates, that was mostly done with a Line6 M9. Here's what the MuRF actually does... http://youtu.be/jisrnigFkAw A bit of a long video, but I tried to give as much info as I could. I did this a couple of years ago for the comp on here, the Bass Murf is used for the faster wubs & the slower one is just done by foot on the Moog MF-101. Just after the 2:50 mark, you can hear the Murf clearly. https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/the-auroral-zone Happy fx board building. -
Very nice. I was looking at these and the Akai ones a couple of months ago. Both very sturdy & well featured controllers. I don't think there's an 88 key version just yet. Arturia do a nice 88 key lab board.

xgsjx replied to AinsleyWalker's topic in Effects
The MuRF pedals are not synth pedals. They're multi filter pedals. Have a look at the review I did a few years back. If you're wanting synth, I'd suggest going down the route of either a pedal that says synth on it (or maybe the pigtronix mothership), or look at getting a few pedals to make a synth filter section (like octaver, dirt, LPF like the moog mf101 & so on). -
Got the basics of mine. Not sure I'll get time to get it how I want it. The vocal is a little too loud & the vocoder could be better, but it does represent what I hear when I look at the image. https://soundcloud.com/gxmix/home-sunrise I'll try & get a little more time next week.
