I can only add that you're more likely to go through strings quicker.

I had an OC-3. I liked it. The poly mode has it's uses too, but I mainly had it set mono - 1oct & going through dirt & filters.

what's the future like for bass has it all been done?
I find the seaboard really hard to get on with, my fingers want to stick to it which seems to fly in the face of the sliding functionality
Sticky fingers, eh. Never had that problem for a while. I know what you mean. I had a play on the Grand & the Rise. A rub of oil would go a long way, though you'd maybe need to wash your hands during any breaks so your drink doesn't slide out of your hand. Great concept though & the aftertouch on it is really good. -
De-Tweetering a Cab - anything important I should know?
xgsjx replied to Naetharu's topic in Amps and Cabs
You could also remove the tweeter from the baffle -board (unscrew the mounts ); stuff a piece of foam rubber into the horn and remount the tweeter.
That's kinda what I was going to suggest, but a bit less "bodge it". Mine was going to be put a piece of foam over the tweeter & hold it in place with duck tape. -
Thanks gents... much appreciated. Although everyone has suggested something different!
What else would you expect on a bass forum? TBH, they're all very viable options. It's down to you to read some reviews, watch some youchoob vids & make a choice. Have fun.

Learning which effects do what is important. A multi fx unit is a good way to learn. As for suggestions, that's like suggesting what sort of transport you need to go to work without giving any further info. A drive pedal might be a good choice, but then it might be the worst pedal you could have, depending on what you're playing. I used to play electronica & had various filters, dirt, octave & chorus. But I wanted my bass to sound like a synth. Now I play just clean bass in a blues rock band. No fx, not even a tuner. It's down to what You want your bass to sound like & the best bit is trying different fx & having fun in the process (especially when it comes to trying out all sorts of signal paths for the fx).

Fine for in the bedroom, but if he does decide to join a band, then he'll struggle for volume. However, many rehearsal rooms supply backline.
One more question; How can a 4" woofer and 1 dome tweeter be 50 Watts ??? That sure is loud for such a small PA cab
Simple. Watts are not decibels. My air con unit is 2250 watts & goes pretty cold. Volume is measured in Db. The closest thing you'll probably find in the tech spec to give you a rough idea of how loud it goes, is the SPL figures. It's alł about moving air & that's kinda like getting a sheet of card & wafting it. The bigger the sheet, the more air you move. Don't expect a single 4" driver to put out the same volume as a single 10" driver. But it depends on how far back & forth a driver can move too before it breaks. However, when you start adding more drivers, you move more air. PJB cabs use multiples of 5" drivers, but they're also in well designed cabs to make the most of those drivers. For a single PA cab, anything budget with a driver smaller than 10" is really a monitor for in the home studio.

Another to have a look at is ipostparcels.com I've used them many times & they've been excellent. Very cheap too. -
First off thank you all for chiming in After hearing what you say and looking at some prices those darn all tube heads do make my wallet sweat so will have to look at this last option I quoted here. Ok if I go with a PA Speaker what kind should I get? I mean do I go only with 1x tweeter or the one with 1 x woofer 1 x dome tweeter? As mentioned Im on a low budget now so will have to manage with affordable gear. I am looking at this one at Thomann http://www.thomann.d...achat_104_a.htm I will not gig or anything so mostly home practice. It does say 50 Watts on that box above. This Behringer preamp seem to be getting some decent reviews so I will go with it http://www.thomann.d...ling_preamp.htm Ok in this case of going for an active PA Speaker I can even afford a amp sim pedal from Harley Benton for the guitar. And I can use the PA speaker to monitor my recordings too I guess. How do I connect the PA speaker to my laptop since it has a XLR in and out ?? Thanks again this thread was helpful! Dad if Im to get that 2x15" cab I would need to take my bed out of the room and sleep on it instead
I'd go & try some if you can, though with Thomann's own brand stuff, a trip to Germany might be needed. I would say get as good a PA cab as you can afford.

Another option is the many audio interfaces that support plugging in an iPad such as the Presonus iOne & iTwo, & the new Stienberg UR interfaces. The Presonus ones are on offer just now.

Best company for delivery/shipping - Any advice
xgsjx replied to doc40hz's topic in General Discussion
It really depends on where you're shipping it to. Since I moved to Perth 8 1/2 years ago, I've never had parcel farce deliver to my door yet. Phoned them & complained several times. Had cards through my door telling me the parcel is at the local post office, only to go there & be informed that they've no idea what I'm talking about & then found out that it's actually back at the farce's sorting office (on more than 1 occasion). -
Like Bassman says, something like an amp simulator & either a power amp & PA cab, or just a powered PA speaker would cover it all. If it's acoustic guitar, then I used my Markbass combo with my electro acoustic for many gigs & it sounded fantastic. You could use a pedal for the tube sounds.
-
another one to look at is the Presonus iOne or iTwo. They come with Studio One which looks like it's a doddle to use. They do a bundle just now with the iTwo, headphones, condenser mic & XLR cable for £139.

Well for that, I'm not doing it!

Forget clean - what would you look for in a filthy cab?
xgsjx replied to Naetharu's topic in Amps and Cabs
This is basically my issue - I'm playing with quite a bit of fuzz on some songs (just ordered myself a Zeus for this purpose) and so I want to be sensible and err on the side of caution. I've actually just purchased the cab - a 400-watt 8ohm GK cab. I know there is no surefire way to ensure you don't blow speakers but I'd certainly rather do my best to avoid upping the risk.
it's good that you're wanting to be cautious. Using effects means you might have to take some of them into account. If you're using low pass filter or octave down (or like I used to, both with added dirt too), then you are considerably increasing how much the driver is travelling to get the same volume as you would have without the fx. This means that regardless of watts, if your low end is needing more movement, then there's the increased chance of the driver reaching it's maximum travel & failing. If you're just using dirt, then there's a chance that it takes away a little of your bottom end, which in theory should allow you to go louder. But as you're using dirt, there's the downside that you're less likely to hear when you're pushing the drivers too hard. -

xgsjx replied to Naetharu's topic in Amps and Cabs
But how do you know how many watts your amp is putting out without using a meter to measure it? It's very doubtful that it'll be consistently putting out anywhere near what the manufacturer specified it as being. -
I'm not jealous... Much!
-
Like is said, it'depends what you're wanting it for overall. I'd get the best you can afford. My bro has 2 Radiovox amps running 4 15" Peavey tops & then a separate amp running an unbranded sub that's loaded with 2 18" drivers (it's pretty huge). Has a tremendous sound.

I would contact DV247 & ask them if they'll pay for Tascam to send you one & then contact Tascam for one to be sent. If they refuse, let them know you're returning the unit as "unfit for purpose" & get one elsewhere. Virgin did something similar with me some years ago. Was supposed to get an HDMI cable with the V+ box. Called them several times with the promise that one would be sent. In the end they said "Go & buy one & send us the receipt", so I went to Comet & bought one for £70. They refunded me.

xgsjx replied to Naetharu's topic in Amps and Cabs
The ampeg cabs look great but they are not quite powerful enough - they say the RMS rating is 200-watts @ 8ohms and I need a minimum of 250-watts according to Ashdown. Alas, they would have been great for the Orange amp...oh things are never simple
A good reason to ignore the specified watts? -
Basically because I liked the amp but not the cab. The amp voicing, the EQ range and the bendable drive are perfect for what I am after. The matching cab, which is the Orange Smart-Power, is way over-priced and while it sounds good its nothing stunning. I just thought I would ask on here to see what people thought since most of the discussion I have read about cabs has been looking for stuff to use with a clean bass tone.
Did you try the amp through a different cab? I would. That way you know that you liked the amp's sound & not a mix of the two. I like MarkBass cabs, but only you can decide if it sounds good with that amp.
