Like Bassman says, something like an amp simulator & either a power amp & PA cab, or just a powered PA speaker would cover it all. If it's acoustic guitar, then I used my Markbass combo with my electro acoustic for many gigs & it sounded fantastic. You could use a pedal for the tube sounds.

another one to look at is the Presonus iOne or iTwo. They come with Studio One which looks like it's a doddle to use. They do a bundle just now with the iTwo, headphones, condenser mic & XLR cable for £139.

Well for that, I'm not doing it!

Forget clean - what would you look for in a filthy cab?
xgsjx replied to Naetharu's topic in Amps and Cabs
This is basically my issue - I'm playing with quite a bit of fuzz on some songs (just ordered myself a Zeus for this purpose) and so I want to be sensible and err on the side of caution. I've actually just purchased the cab - a 400-watt 8ohm GK cab. I know there is no surefire way to ensure you don't blow speakers but I'd certainly rather do my best to avoid upping the risk.
it's good that you're wanting to be cautious. Using effects means you might have to take some of them into account. If you're using low pass filter or octave down (or like I used to, both with added dirt too), then you are considerably increasing how much the driver is travelling to get the same volume as you would have without the fx. This means that regardless of watts, if your low end is needing more movement, then there's the increased chance of the driver reaching it's maximum travel & failing. If you're just using dirt, then there's a chance that it takes away a little of your bottom end, which in theory should allow you to go louder. But as you're using dirt, there's the downside that you're less likely to hear when you're pushing the drivers too hard. -

But how do you know how many watts your amp is putting out without using a meter to measure it? It's very doubtful that it'll be consistently putting out anywhere near what the manufacturer specified it as being. -
I'm not jealous... Much!

Like is said, it'depends what you're wanting it for overall. I'd get the best you can afford. My bro has 2 Radiovox amps running 4 15" Peavey tops & then a separate amp running an unbranded sub that's loaded with 2 18" drivers (it's pretty huge). Has a tremendous sound.

I would contact DV247 & ask them if they'll pay for Tascam to send you one & then contact Tascam for one to be sent. If they refuse, let them know you're returning the unit as "unfit for purpose" & get one elsewhere. Virgin did something similar with me some years ago. Was supposed to get an HDMI cable with the V+ box. Called them several times with the promise that one would be sent. In the end they said "Go & buy one & send us the receipt", so I went to Comet & bought one for £70. They refunded me.

Spent a little time working here & there on this track. Finally got round to bouncing it down & trying my hand at mastering. https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/original-glitch
The ampeg cabs look great but they are not quite powerful enough - they say the RMS rating is 200-watts @ 8ohms and I need a minimum of 250-watts according to Ashdown. Alas, they would have been great for the Orange amp...oh things are never simple
A good reason to ignore the specified watts? -
Basically because I liked the amp but not the cab. The amp voicing, the EQ range and the bendable drive are perfect for what I am after. The matching cab, which is the Orange Smart-Power, is way over-priced and while it sounds good its nothing stunning. I just thought I would ask on here to see what people thought since most of the discussion I have read about cabs has been looking for stuff to use with a clean bass tone.
Did you try the amp through a different cab? I would. That way you know that you liked the amp's sound & not a mix of the two. I like MarkBass cabs, but only you can decide if it sounds good with that amp. -
I appreciate this approach, but I just love the sound that the OB1-300 makes. It really works for me and would be very usable for the kind of music that I am playing with my main band. I was just hoping for some tips regarding cabs since I had no idea where to start and figured some folks on here have no doubt been in the same situation and would have lots of wisdom on the matter.
So on that, why not buy the cab that you heard it through? That way you're gonna get that sound that you heard & liked. -
Can't beat a good old fashioned mouse nest, stale pet urine or a nice mould forest IMHO, spiders just aren't stinky enough.
Good point. But if you play through the cab, then the spiders might come running out, which could be a nice touch on stage. And if you have a female singer, they'll help her reach the high notes. -

Spiders! If I was looking in a filthy cab, I'd look for spiders. -
I know because my keyboard player moved to Elgin - driving up via the Great Glen and Loch Ness feels eternal.
That's a long way round for a shortcut. I used to go up to Elgin often. Head up the A9, cut off at Aviemore & head along the A95.

I use ipostparcels & have no issues (very affordable too). Where's your buyer based?

Why are different 500watt heads rated differently at 8ohms?
xgsjx replied to dave_bass5's topic in Amps and Cabs
I could be wrong on this, but every time I've looked at watts & ohms, 8 ohm usually works out about 2/3 of the 4 ohm rating. -
8 ohm. 8 & 8 make 4 when it comes to ohms. Even if you're not planning on adding a cab, go for the 8 ohm as the difference in volume is so little it's hardly worth wearing your amp out for.

My singing voice has emptied pubs. Literally!
Still leaves lots of other branches.
I'll see if I can carve something different, but it wood need to be good.
Here we go, then; here's my interpretation of the photo ... Elegy Written For An Allergic Stump ... Full details on the host site, so I shan't repeat here. Enjoy.
Well after listening to that, every time I look at the picture all I can see is a sneeze coming on. Now I'm completely stumped!

What about a hiab? I got a length of acoustic drum riser foam & cut it in half & placed them under the cab anytime I was on a wooden stage.
Skyhooks?
Believe it or not, there is such a thing as skyhooks. I had a set for using to assemble a Ferris wheel. They're 2 3' long rods bent to a spiral hook at one end & joined by a steel ring at the other. They attach to the end of a spoke & the ring gets attached to a snap block to pull the wheel around whilst putting on further spokes (arms).
-
Oooh. Just had a look. Now that's another fine option. I might hold off & get that & a camera kit for the ipad.

I'd be inclined to suspect there was already a fault with the driver (going on what you've said so far). Though if you had the lows boosted quite a bit, then that could cause an issue.
