1. Had a listen to your track Dad. Love the 70s feel of it & it should win just for the title.
2.
Hi ya all lovely Bass folks! Im new to this forum (and new to bass and recording) so take all I say with a grain of salt. I'm one of those who dont have the money but would like to play an instrument and to record some of my fiddlings. I could not afford more expensive gear so went for the Behringer U-Phoria UM2 and to my (untrained newbie) ear it sounds ok for home studio and is very affordable over at Thomann.de Here is a take with my cheap Harley Benton JB-75 bass direct into the U-Phoria UM2 and then into Reaper. NOTE; Im still learning how to tweak the EQ for bass and I just started playing bass 2 month ago so ignore my playing. This is only for the sound reference; https://soundcloud.c...n-on-reaper-daw
That's a decent recording. How do you find the build quality? Nice wee bit of playing too.
3.
In that case 2 of my basses should sound exactly the same. They don't. Both have babicz bridges Both have the same Fender original 62 pbass pick up Both are passive - even wired using the same pots, wire and jack. They both wear the same strings at the same gauge. So you are saying they should sound exactly the same? Far from it. One has a Status neck, the other a maple and rosewood neck and they sound very very different from each other.
I don't believe you. I think it's just a placebo effect because you know the necks are different.
4. I've always enjoyed gigging. Not done it for a while, but wouldn't mind doing it again. However, in my current situation I'm more than happy not to be gigging. Writing & remixing songs at home & having the occasional jam fills my musical needs.
5.
Any history to the picture. I've never seen it before.
It's called "Great Destinations" by Henryca Citra. Google his name & have a look at his stuff on Deviantart. Here's what he has under the pic...
This is the invitation image that I made for some event in my home town medan, so behind this image that I want to describe is : "to develop medan into a city of art" ( anykind of art, can be music, architecture, painting, theatre, etc), so I drew a landscape view with a bunch of identical landmark from medan city, like water tower, n a view of old dutch buildings, n many others, mix with a surrealism n cartoony feel inside. hope you all like it, comments n critics are most welcome.
The original is a bit wider with some more goings on & is also flipped the opposite way around, the one above is what I have as a background on my laptop.
6. 1st jam done & & it was good fun. Drummer hasn't played for about 5 years & I expected him to be a bit rusty, but he just played some awesome beats. Made laying a groove simple & enjoyable. The guitarist is very competent & easy to work with too, which is a bonus & we could work off one another doing riffs & solos. The singer was a bit shy on singing to start with, but once he started, he was worth the wait. Good set of lungs. Much fun was had. We're gonna have another in a few weeks.
7. A couple of years ago, I stopped playing in bands & practically gave up playing bass. I sold all my gear other than the bass itself. Tonight, I'm off to have a jam with 3 guys from work. Might never gig & maybe nothing will come of it, but I'm actually looking forward to playing just for the fun of it without anything else expected. Just glad the rooms we're going to are practically plug n play.
8. Technically I have 2 basses. One is in many pieces though. I have other stringed & non stringed instruments too.
9. I'd say a wee mixer with USB or an audio interface & you can use your computer to play along with & even record some tracks too.
10. I like it. Very 4Hero. Could go a middle 8 or breakdown in the middle. Maybe move the bit that's at the end to the middle & do some building on it with the busier bassline coming in with the beat after it to give impact.
11. Congrats on the new rig. I'd have went for 2 identical cabs, but if you're mainly playing larger venues & outdoor gigs, then you're gonna have PA to put your sound to the audience. You shouldn't have any probs shifting the Ashdown on here. Oh, & as for the new rig...
12. I've had Markbass & had no issues at all during the 6 years I had them. Not heard of any reliability with TC either.
13. That might be down to your cabs. Watts don't = volume, that's decibel's job.
14. TC amps were tested over on TalkBass & they use a 236w power section in the RH series. This is also worth a read... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/235100-tc-electronic-is-definately-better-than-markbass/page__hl__markbass%20tc
15. Is the BH800 800 watt or is it like the RH750 which is 236 watt? I'd try them all & get the one you prefer.
16. 1/2 the fun of a pedal board is changing pedal order to get the sound to your liking. When I used fx, I had my signal split & put distortion on the mid & treble only, keeping the low end free of it, though there was a slight amount of drive on the lows too.
17.
That's what to call it when the Good Lady catches you with your old chap in your hand!
Fine if you play with a pick.
18.
The problem with iPad apps IMO isn't the app or the iPad but it's connections to the outside world which simply isn't robust enough to stand up to gigging. It seems to me that the better the technology and applications get, the worse the hardware for connecting them together becomes. Back in the days of dedicated hardware samplers, synths and sequencers, MIDI and SCSI might have been a bit of a dark art when it came to getting the devices to talk to each other, but the cables and connectors were a lot more sturdy and gig proof.
That's true. Just sold an Akai S3000XL that was made in 96 & all the sockets on it are better quality than what you get on most high end products today.
19.
Well, after last months flourish , I am back into my normal position in the way of things
To be fair, you chose a photo that generated lots of inspiration in the entrants.
20. Wowzers! I actually came joint 1st!!! Bilbo's is the better song (by a long way), so he should really be choosing the image. I'll confer with him later. Gotta get ready for work.
21. Before you spend any money, try sticking Alchemy on your iPad. It's a free synth & you can buy upgrades for it if you need them. Worth a download to see if it'll run ok on your iPad. I've got an iPad 3 that's now running a bit slow, but there's no issues with Alchemy on it. If you want even semi convincing pianos or strings on a stand alone synth, you might need to increase your budget to about £200+.

Moog MIDI MuRF

I had the Bass MuRF as part of my set up along with the MF-101. Brilliant pedal for routing things. Highly missed here. Here's a couple of things I did using it... https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/death-of-a-jazz-club A long mess about with the Bass Murf. http://youtu.be/jisrnigFkAw And a longer video with other fx. http://youtu.be/Z73FWmWNQbA
23. I didn't mind that song. Not a lover or hater of Simply Red, but they do have some good grooves & Fugly bloke is a great singist. My 80s were more stuff like Talking Heads, Jean Michel Jarre, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, The Cure & Marillion.
24. I haven't tried the GK that you're looking at, but I did try the GK 700ii 2x10 combo & had the MB 2x10 combo for 6 years. It's the MarkBass for me. I played all styles of music from Rock to Americana to Electronica & The MB did the job perfectly. Not sure what the newer MBs are like, but the B&C drivers in the older ones are superb. Extremely loud for a 2x10. My advice to you would be to try both with your own bass & choose with your ears.
25.
The problem isn't generally with the interface - USB speeds are more than adequate these days - but with any other equipment you might need to have connected interfering with it. USB is a dumb protocol, and each device connected needs its own driver. Many of these are built into the OS, but the less common types of device have to have their own custom driver installed. A lot of this stuff is designed first and foremost to work on Windows and often (certainly at the budget end of the market) the Mac driver is a quickly thrown together kludge "designed" with little regard to what else it is going to be sharing the bus. Most of the time this won't be a problem, but audio is a lot more sensitive. Having a hub makes little difference because all the devices on the hub are still all on the same bus. If you don't have any other equipment connected by USB (or at least nothing that isn't directly supported by the OS) other than the interface you should be OK, but personally I'd always pick a FireWire or Thunderbolt audio interface over a USB one.
Cheers for the advice. I don't use the USB ports for anything other than a Bamboo tablet (which isn't used for music) or for backing up iOS devices. My iMac is only a few months old, but according to the USB info on the "About this Mac", it''s a single bus with a 4 way hub. I've not looked at the Macbook Pro & it might be a different story. It has 2 USB ports & 2 Thunderbolt ports, but it's the iMac that's the dedicated DAW. As I'll be getting a remote keyboard later, it might be worth paying the extra for the Thunderbolt interface (Zoom TAC-2).
