1. Reaper will run on just about any laptop. But like is said, get as big a hard drive as you can. 8 gig ram is more than enough, unless you're running a whole load of fx on multiple tracks. If you're liking GarageBand on the iPad, it might be worth considering a MacBook. GarageBand comes free with it & when you get to a point where you need more control & professional features, Logic Pro X is just like GarageBand but with everything opened up for you to play with. I've recently gotten a MacBook Pro & it runs everything with ease. But you could spend £1k less & have a non apple laptop, run Reaper & buy some VSTs (or you could run Reaper on a MacBook ).
2.
I just love your cakes dude
If only my tunes were as good.
3. I've listened to all, but still need to choose three! Great stuff by all.
4. Lozz went from Ampeg to MarkBass. He said that they have a similar sound when in the mix. Having had MarkBass myself, the 2x10 combo or the 1x12 with the 121 extension should be more than up to the task.
5. I've had Camel Audio's Alchemy synth on the iPad for a few years & even on there, it's a powerful beast. Apple bought Camel Audio a few years back, which I only found out recently. 2 days ago, Apple released an update for Logic Pro X that, among other things, adds Alchemy as a UAi. They've given the synth a bit of an overhaul & it's pretty amazing & can be as simple or as complex as you like. The sounds it produces are truly fantastic. and to top it off, there's also another 19gb of additional downloadable content for it too (all free as well)!
6. I've found the strings in Logic to be most excellent so far, but then you'd be buying a new DAW to get them (& maybe a Mac too).
7. I did a post on here a couple of months back asking people if they had a broad or narrow taste in music. the majority said that they wouldn't actively listen to more than one or two genres. & that's bassists! Me, I can happily say that I'll listen to every genre on that list & some of the ones not mentioned too.
8. My thinking is the same as Skol's. I put my music up there for people to hear. Some songs I make downloadable, some I don't (such as remixes where the owner of the original content has not given me permission to make so). I can see where PRS are coming from, but sometimes it can be a bit strict for things like an amateur band cover a song & stick it on soundcloud. Would a band that's already earning money really want to pursue an amateur band starting out? Bands that are already gigging should have a license if they're covering songs & uploading them & it should be those that PRS pursue. I think PRS are trying to do the right thing by the musician, but I do think there are some jobsworths working for them.
9.
just play something you can really sink your teeth into
Sink your teeth into that - Talas Anything by Billy Sheehan or Les Claypool should impress. My go to for impressing is Fur Elise - my own transcription of it.
10. A 6 KVA from somewhere like HSS should adequately do the job, but check what the overall amps are & make sure you're adequately covering this.
11.
In hindsight you did. But, I always look at the picture and stare until my forehead bleeds. It took me a while before I could get past the discussion on eye of the tiger...

It didn't help! Luckily I'd already pretty much decided on an idea before I read that!
Sorry about that. You'll just have to rise up to the challenge of your rivals.
12. If Skol's gonna use that as a pic if he wins, then he'll get my vote without me having to even listen to his track!
13.
Provolone.
Is that a hard cheese?
14. I tried Audacity & Reaper. Preferred Reaper as it's straight forward & if you've use any other DAW, then it feels familiar. If you are on Mac though, GarageBand is better. Just got Logic myself & it's as simple or as complex as you want it to be. Best £150 I've spent for a long time (it is Mac only & a damn good excuse to get a Mac).
15.
If they disappear in the band mix..then that is a collective band problem. If this happens with a simple gtr, bass drums format, you have real problems. There really is no excuse whatsoever, IMO, for a bass not to be heard in that sort of line-up Those problems are personell changers IMV.
I agree. It can be as simple as not having enough mids on the bass. Having the bass turned up too far at home can result in not getting loud enough in the band mix due to the driver limits. Decreasing the low end or turning up the mids makes a big difference. Then take that sound home, turn the volume down & it might not sound as pleasing to the ears as before. The other issue is that if the rig can handle those lows, they might overpower the band's sound. This is going on the assumption that you use the same rig at home as you do in the band.
16.
Any reason for the removal of Alex's reply? He's been nothing but helpful in this thread and I'm sure that I would have found whatever he said useful.
I think it was something to do with him saying "b***** f****** sh** c********* p***", only slightly differently.
17. I think there may be more than a couple of bassists that have gotten a great sound at home, joined their first band & totally disappeared in the sound. I found that the best thing to do at home when finding new sounds was to put a track on & play along to it. It's too easy to increase the lows at low volume when you're mucking about at home.
18. Or you could make your own if you're handy with a soldering iron. What you really need though is a Valnott.
19.
That's a good example of things I have no interest in. I'm not the boss and would not want to be. We have a band leader she's the boss and calls all the shots. You identified the functions of a bass player, not things related to how to be in a band. Blue
I think my sense of humour was lost a bit there. I think the important bit of being in a band is to know who started the band, what they're looking for it to do & where you fit in. Is it your style of music, is there room for style variations etc, and most importantly, are you getting what you want from it?
20. I think as long as you let them know who's boss, you'll be fine. You're the bassist. The most important member, the one that keeps the drummer & everyone else in time, the one who provides the song it's backbone & groove, the one that understands how all the sounds fit together, the one that has to tell the guitarist to turn down. It's hard work being a bassist!
21.
Thanks lads ... 2x15 speakers !!!! Ooooooh , Id be entering into the unknown there , what ya think.
On the contrary, you'd have a better chance of getting more of the same as the 1 15". Adding a 2x10 or something else that doesn't match, would take you into the unknown (literally).
22. Ramble On - Led Zeppelin, can't recall the key, but I think it's in E major Runaway - Jamiroquai, Cm maybe?
23.
DJs have done far more innovating in the last 30 years than any jazz artists have. And I say that as someone who likes jazz. These threads make me sad. If I posted a similar thread about how blues rock was a load of old crap that wasn't proper music it would be locked inside of about three minutes.
There are some blues rock acts that have questionable musical abilities.
