1. I used to find walking up to the sound engineer, twisting his nipple & asking him to whistle remedied a lot of sound issues.
2. I'd say go to a shop & try some. My choice is the 2x10 STD.
3.
I noticed the inside of my old Midget was not brilliant...
I hope that's either a Barefaced cab or an MG car you're talking about?
4.
Personally, im starting ti think that all modulation effects should have expression pedal inputs for the modulation parameters as ive yet to find (exclusing subtle chorus) an effect that can be constantly on and/or not sound Bizzare when activated mid song.
You mean like a Moog?
5. Another for Moog. Try the Bass Murf or Midi Murf as well. They do swirly, tremmy & rhythmic (& dirt, all at the same time if you like too).
6. Ohms works the opposite way around from what you initially thought it did.
7. Kong are the only company that I know that regularly do keys in colours other than standard white with black. Back in the 80s when I was a kid, I did put red insulating tape on the white keys of one of my keyboards. Looked good from a short distance, but from a player's eye, it was keys covered in insulation tape. You could take the keys off & spray them. You'd need to key them with some sandpaper to get paint to stick & you'd probably have to do a very thin coat so they don't jam off one another (so the paint may only last a short while before needing rubbed down & repainted), but it can be done. These guys do some cool custom jobs, but nothing in the way of changing key colour. http://www.customsynth.co.uk/index.html
8. Oooh! I like that. Just need to come up with a choon to fit!
9. Well done Lurks, great track.
10. I'm another who's had a few long breaks from playing & came back to it like I'd never been away. It is possible at your age to forget how to play though. Dementia mid gig would suck!
11.
The thing about flats is....I play a fair bit of slap, and they're allegedly not much use for slap. I'll give them a shot though, because I'm curious.
D'Addario Chromes are a bright flatwound & get a good sound for slapping & they're among the cheapest decent flats you can get. However, I had no problems getting a good sound out of Thomastik Infeld Jazz 344s. The only way to get better at loud volume is with band practice. Some of those sounds actually add to the overall sound too!
12. Reaper will run on just about any laptop. But like is said, get as big a hard drive as you can. 8 gig ram is more than enough, unless you're running a whole load of fx on multiple tracks. If you're liking GarageBand on the iPad, it might be worth considering a MacBook. GarageBand comes free with it & when you get to a point where you need more control & professional features, Logic Pro X is just like GarageBand but with everything opened up for you to play with. I've recently gotten a MacBook Pro & it runs everything with ease. But you could spend £1k less & have a non apple laptop, run Reaper & buy some VSTs (or you could run Reaper on a MacBook ).
13.
I just love your cakes dude
If only my tunes were as good.
14. I've listened to all, but still need to choose three! Great stuff by all.
15. Lozz went from Ampeg to MarkBass. He said that they have a similar sound when in the mix. Having had MarkBass myself, the 2x10 combo or the 1x12 with the 121 extension should be more than up to the task.
16. I've had Camel Audio's Alchemy synth on the iPad for a few years & even on there, it's a powerful beast. Apple bought Camel Audio a few years back, which I only found out recently. 2 days ago, Apple released an update for Logic Pro X that, among other things, adds Alchemy as a UAi. They've given the synth a bit of an overhaul & it's pretty amazing & can be as simple or as complex as you like. The sounds it produces are truly fantastic. and to top it off, there's also another 19gb of additional downloadable content for it too (all free as well)!
17. I've found the strings in Logic to be most excellent so far, but then you'd be buying a new DAW to get them (& maybe a Mac too).
18. I did a post on here a couple of months back asking people if they had a broad or narrow taste in music. the majority said that they wouldn't actively listen to more than one or two genres. & that's bassists! Me, I can happily say that I'll listen to every genre on that list & some of the ones not mentioned too.
19. My thinking is the same as Skol's. I put my music up there for people to hear. Some songs I make downloadable, some I don't (such as remixes where the owner of the original content has not given me permission to make so). I can see where PRS are coming from, but sometimes it can be a bit strict for things like an amateur band cover a song & stick it on soundcloud. Would a band that's already earning money really want to pursue an amateur band starting out? Bands that are already gigging should have a license if they're covering songs & uploading them & it should be those that PRS pursue. I think PRS are trying to do the right thing by the musician, but I do think there are some jobsworths working for them.
20.
just play something you can really sink your teeth into
Sink your teeth into that - Talas Anything by Billy Sheehan or Les Claypool should impress. My go to for impressing is Fur Elise - my own transcription of it.
21. A 6 KVA from somewhere like HSS should adequately do the job, but check what the overall amps are & make sure you're adequately covering this.
22.
In hindsight you did. But, I always look at the picture and stare until my forehead bleeds. It took me a while before I could get past the discussion on eye of the tiger...

It didn't help! Luckily I'd already pretty much decided on an idea before I read that!
Sorry about that. You'll just have to rise up to the challenge of your rivals.
23. If Skol's gonna use that as a pic if he wins, then he'll get my vote without me having to even listen to his track!
24.
Provolone.
Is that a hard cheese?
25. I tried Audacity & Reaper. Preferred Reaper as it's straight forward & if you've use any other DAW, then it feels familiar. If you are on Mac though, GarageBand is better. Just got Logic myself & it's as simple or as complex as you want it to be. Best £150 I've spent for a long time (it is Mac only & a damn good excuse to get a Mac).
