If they disappear in the band mix..then that is a collective band problem. If this happens with a simple gtr, bass drums format, you have real problems. There really is no excuse whatsoever, IMO, for a bass not to be heard in that sort of line-up Those problems are personell changers IMV.
I agree. It can be as simple as not having enough mids on the bass. Having the bass turned up too far at home can result in not getting loud enough in the band mix due to the driver limits. Decreasing the low end or turning up the mids makes a big difference. Then take that sound home, turn the volume down & it might not sound as pleasing to the ears as before. The other issue is that if the rig can handle those lows, they might overpower the band's sound. This is going on the assumption that you use the same rig at home as you do in the band.
Any reason for the removal of Alex's reply? He's been nothing but helpful in this thread and I'm sure that I would have found whatever he said useful.
I think it was something to do with him saying "b***** f****** sh** c********* p***", only slightly differently.

I think there may be more than a couple of bassists that have gotten a great sound at home, joined their first band & totally disappeared in the sound. I found that the best thing to do at home when finding new sounds was to put a track on & play along to it. It's too easy to increase the lows at low volume when you're mucking about at home.

Or you could make your own if you're handy with a soldering iron. What you really need though is a Valnott.
That's a good example of things I have no interest in. I'm not the boss and would not want to be. We have a band leader she's the boss and calls all the shots. You identified the functions of a bass player, not things related to how to be in a band. Blue
I think my sense of humour was lost a bit there. I think the important bit of being in a band is to know who started the band, what they're looking for it to do & where you fit in. Is it your style of music, is there room for style variations etc, and most importantly, are you getting what you want from it?
-
I think as long as you let them know who's boss, you'll be fine. You're the bassist. The most important member, the one that keeps the drummer & everyone else in time, the one who provides the song it's backbone & groove, the one that understands how all the sounds fit together, the one that has to tell the guitarist to turn down. It's hard work being a bassist!

Extension cab for Ashdown Electric Blue 180W - 1x15.. ???
xgsjx replied to bayles's topic in Amps and Cabs
Thanks lads ... 2x15 speakers !!!! Ooooooh , Id be entering into the unknown there , what ya think.
On the contrary, you'd have a better chance of getting more of the same as the 1 15". Adding a 2x10 or something else that doesn't match, would take you into the unknown (literally). -
Ramble On - Led Zeppelin, can't recall the key, but I think it's in E major Runaway - Jamiroquai, Cm maybe?
DJs have done far more innovating in the last 30 years than any jazz artists have. And I say that as someone who likes jazz. These threads make me sad. If I posted a similar thread about how blues rock was a load of old crap that wasn't proper music it would be locked inside of about three minutes.
There are some blues rock acts that have questionable musical abilities.
That said, I still can't stop humming 'Eye of the Tiger'... thanks xgsjx! Grrr.
Went to the chippy for lunch today & it was playing in there! Had I been able to get away with it, I'd have used a sample or two from it in my track.

There's many wannabe DJs who just spin other folks records. But the better DJs are usually musicians aw well, writing EDM or remixing someone else's song to their style. I love Jazz (possibly my fave genre), I love Rock & many other genres of music too, but there's something about a good bit of house music that I can't resist (even as an old fart). I love writing the stuff too. Tried to get a live band together that would play house music on real instruments, but too many people have such a narrow taste in music (or just music snobs).

I know what you mean, but his (over)use of toms on songs like Bitter Suite added to the atmosphere. He does like his toms though.
Mick Pointer is only on the first album. The rest is Ian Mosley.
Hah! I should've googled first. Despite me listening to them throughout my teenage years in the 80s, I could only tell you who the drummer was from listening to Margaret. I like Mosley's drumming then. If he's the worst drummer in prog rock, then prog rock has a pretty decent requisite.
-
Marillion could be great, but IMO Ian Mosley has to be the worst drummer in prog.
TBH, I've never listened to any of the post Fish material. So Mick Pointer is the drummer I associate with them. The last album I bought of their's was La Gazza Ladra (I bought every one prior to it too).
-
You can't have a prog rock thread & not mention Marillion! Misplaced Childhood is a great album from start to finish, but then, so are their other albums.

Thanks. I had another blast at mastering it, but took off a little too much in the lower end. My monitors are a bit on the bassy side.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! But I do love cake, if you're offering
I'll include a picture of cake with it.

There's also Abraham LaBoriel. Fantastic bassist. I've never heard Fred, gonna have a listen later on.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Logic has a fantastic bagpipe sample. I'll make you a wee tune with it next week if I get time between making cake.

I wasn't happy with the final mix, so I've played about with it & happy now... https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/in-flight-1

Using nothing but Logic, I've made my first song in it. I even used the BC comp photo for inspiration OK, I need to learn more about using it for EQing & mastering to get a more professional sound, but the things it can do are immense! Well chuffed with it! https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/in-flight

My sitarist got eaten by the tiger, so replaced him with an organist... https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/in-flight
They'd have to try very hard to convince they are worth a look then. One reason why you don't do newbies. Let someone else go through the pain of 'teaching' them...
A luxury being in a city or well populated area is having access to lots of experienced musicians. Get away to a town & there becomes a lot less in the way of musician & these karaoke people are the majority & you discover there's also an abundance of people who own a guitar who want to join a band. Never quite got why guitar is such a popular instrument for people to pick up (says he who also owns a guitar).
