1.
That said, I still can't stop humming 'Eye of the Tiger'... thanks xgsjx! Grrr.
Went to the chippy for lunch today & it was playing in there! Had I been able to get away with it, I'd have used a sample or two from it in my track.
2. There's many wannabe DJs who just spin other folks records. But the better DJs are usually musicians aw well, writing EDM or remixing someone else's song to their style. I love Jazz (possibly my fave genre), I love Rock & many other genres of music too, but there's something about a good bit of house music that I can't resist (even as an old fart). I love writing the stuff too. Tried to get a live band together that would play house music on real instruments, but too many people have such a narrow taste in music (or just music snobs).
3. I know what you mean, but his (over)use of toms on songs like Bitter Suite added to the atmosphere. He does like his toms though.
4.
Mick Pointer is only on the first album. The rest is Ian Mosley.
Hah! I should've googled first. Despite me listening to them throughout my teenage years in the 80s, I could only tell you who the drummer was from listening to Margaret. I like Mosley's drumming then. If he's the worst drummer in prog rock, then prog rock has a pretty decent requisite.
5.
Marillion could be great, but IMO Ian Mosley has to be the worst drummer in prog.
TBH, I've never listened to any of the post Fish material. So Mick Pointer is the drummer I associate with them. The last album I bought of their's was La Gazza Ladra (I bought every one prior to it too).
6. You can't have a prog rock thread & not mention Marillion! Misplaced Childhood is a great album from start to finish, but then, so are their other albums.
7. Thanks. I had another blast at mastering it, but took off a little too much in the lower end. My monitors are a bit on the bassy side.
8.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! But I do love cake, if you're offering
I'll include a picture of cake with it.
9. There's also Abraham LaBoriel. Fantastic bassist. I've never heard Fred, gonna have a listen later on.
10.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Logic has a fantastic bagpipe sample. I'll make you a wee tune with it next week if I get time between making cake.
11. I wasn't happy with the final mix, so I've played about with it & happy now... https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/in-flight-1
12. Using nothing but Logic, I've made my first song in it. I even used the BC comp photo for inspiration OK, I need to learn more about using it for EQing & mastering to get a more professional sound, but the things it can do are immense! Well chuffed with it! https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/in-flight
13. My sitarist got eaten by the tiger, so replaced him with an organist... https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/in-flight
14.
They'd have to try very hard to convince they are worth a look then. One reason why you don't do newbies. Let someone else go through the pain of 'teaching' them...
A luxury being in a city or well populated area is having access to lots of experienced musicians. Get away to a town & there becomes a lot less in the way of musician & these karaoke people are the majority & you discover there's also an abundance of people who own a guitar who want to join a band. Never quite got why guitar is such a popular instrument for people to pick up (says he who also owns a guitar).
15. Damn you. Now I'm gonna have to try & incorporate some sitar too!
16. Both those songs sound fantastic. I started writing something using orchestral instruments, but I've gone a completely different direction.
17. The problem is when you advertise for a singer, there's often no requisite for them to have any gear or experience. So you'll get loads of people who see it as a posh karaoke & to them, why would they want to turn up to see you setting up the karaoke equipment? As for practice, that's what the shower is for! Went through a few singists like those. Sacked every one of them at 2nd rehearsal.
18. If space isn't an issue & you like the sound you get from your current rig, then why would you not want to use it. If space is the issue, then a 1x12 of the cab you have isn't any smaller a footprint, it just means your amp sits lower down, so you might want to consider a small 2x10 (something in the ilk of the MarkBass Traveller maybe).
19. Set the amp flat & get the sound you want from your bass. Add fx if you like. When I had mine, I had the VLE set about 9 o'clock as I liked the sound of it. I'd then adjust the amp to suit the room if needed (like rolling the bass or low mid back a smidge if needed (such as wooden stages). What the MarkBass heads do do well is amplify whatever sounds you're making.
20. Any decent cab & amp or combo is going to be able to do the job. It's down to budget & what sort of sound you want. For starting out, I'd say pick up a small decent 2nd hand combo for around the £100-200 area to get you going (maybe something like a SWR Workingmans, Genz Benz Contour or an Ashdown MAG), & then once you've played a bit with the band, you'll be in a better position to say what you're looking for. IF you're flash with the cash, then go try some rigs out & find out if you want a big heavy Ampeg rig, a lightweight Markbass rig or something completely different.
21. A bass amp. You'd want to get a cab too.
22.
Hmmmm, that sounds like an homage to a vintage JCB in a folk stylee , but I'll Iet you run with that one , I am getting more 'Old Spice meets chariots of fire ' kind of vibe , but quite how the tiger fits in has me stuck
I thank you for the rescue. Vintage JCB in a folk stylee, I can go with that. You remember the Old Spice adverts or are you thinking of that woman that's married to David Beckam? If it's the former, you must be almost as old as me!
23. Just asked my Mrs what style of music does she get from that pic, & her response... "Eye of the tiger" Well, that's me stuck. Every time I look at the pic I get "digadigadigadiga BAMP digadigadiga BAMP BAA BAMP digadigadiga BAMP BAA BARRR"
24. Listened to loads of these tracks last night. Brilliant stuff!
25.
How long did it take to download ? When I got Pro X last year it took about 9 hours, but that's probably my rubbish broadband I think for what you get, it's extremely good value. They also give updates with extra sounds for nothing too, but maybe they all do that ? There was a recent upgrade that gave a whole load more sounds and instruments that I haven't gotten around to downloading yet.
To download Logic itself without the additional content took about 20 mins tops, but then I have really excellent broadband. For the additional content, I set it to download & went to bed, then this morning I set it to download the additional instruments & went to work. 5pm can't come soon enough!
