1.
Same here. I really struggled using a pick so now I pick with no pick! I use my first finger and thumb as though I'm holding a pick but pick the notes with my nail for the downstroke and fleshy/end part of my finger for the upstroke. Works really well and feels more 'connected' to the fretboard than if using a pick. (Found that quite hard to explain!)
I find I play my acoustic 6 string like that whenever I'm not fingerpicking. Still use a pick on the bass though.
2. Here's a good example of double thumbing in a song. http://youtu.be/L0fyYBXVaCU
3.
Even so, I try to avoid it now. If it’s not done very well it sounds a bit naff to me, but I also have a strap with a silky finish so it tends to loosen and lower the bass over time & the lower down the bass gets the harder it is to do slap and pull.
I know what you mean. As someone else described it "it sounds like playing bed springs with chopsticks".
4. Another technique I struggle with is my vocal technique when the guitarist is constantly noodling.
5.
If he is playing a #5th (C Bass) over Em, it would make the chord Cmaj7. Ok, next, over to someone else...lol...
That's true if the key is Em. I was going on the chord being Em, with the C being a B#.
6.
Ah, but the context is the interval between two notes, not position of either note in a scale. Dropping from C to G is a fourth, and going back up from G to C is also a fourth, no matter what key you're in.
But, if he's playing on an Em, then he's playing the #5th (C) to the minor 3rd (G).
7.
I've been working on two-handed tapping for a while now, I find it hard to get hand independence, maybe I'll learn the piano...
Tapping isn't hard once you get the hang of it & it's not painful in the process. Billy Sheehan suggested putting your middle finger over your index finger. It gives more velocity when practicing & I used this method for a long time.
8. Just went back to having a try at double thumbing. Is it one of those things that you need to be plugged in to do? I only tried for about 5 mins & the corner of my thumb at the nail is red raw. My ordinary slap technique is pain free as I use part of my thumb near the knuckle, but this double thumbing malarky is painful! I was watching this video & I think it could well be how hard I'm hitting the strings (though I didn't think I was hitting all that hard). http://youtu.be/mrmKLrOQgXY He posts quite regularly on here in the "Techniques" section.
9.
Looks great, but it strikes me that if one of the cables into the back of the amp gets pulled it might flip the amp backwards over the edge. If that seems like a potential risk can you maybe wrap the cable(s) around a handle somewhere?
Yeah. He could put some Velcro on the tray.
10. Double thumbing is my bug bearer just now, but like anything, practice is all that is needed.
11. That's a fantastic find. Looks good too. Heavy Duty Velcro would have no problem holding the amp to the cab, it's unbelievably grippy, but I'd agree that you wouldn't want to stick it on those cabs. The glue on the back is mega strong.
12. I find it strange that cliffy couldn't get loud enough for his band. I played in a loud band & had no trouble being heard. I'm guessing either he has one really loud band, had it set up poorly, just wasn't suited to his bass or was really unlucky & had 2 faulty units.
13. Adding a cab that isn't the same as the combo (that'll be the 102 STD) is going to change your sound & most likely sound different at different venues. It might sound good, it might not. As for the combo, I had one for many years & only sold it as I'd stopped playing live. If I start again, I'll possibly get another. The Italian built ones were around the £1k mark in the shops & had B&C drivers (no idea what the drivers are now). I think folk are willing to pay for that, knowing that it's a solid built combo. As for sound, it's probably the loudest & best sounding combo I've ever played through. Blew the old TE 4x10 combo back to the 80s.
14. That's maybe why a few known bands can't be found on spottythigh or pandora. Whereas they may not get much revenue from these sources, all the people mentioned still did all right from downloads & sales (not to mention touring). If you're thinking of money, then that's the wrong reason to start/join a band. If it's for money, then you want to be a promoter.
15. If I fetched either home, the wife would gi me grief. I'd take my chance with the Ritter though.
16.
What apps do you all use on your iPads? We're wanting to add specific sounds (ie Girls and Boys Blur synth) but not got the first clue how to do it.
I got Korg Gadget a few months back. Good fun app & can make a decent song in it, but not sure if it would be my choice live. I made this in it... https://soundcloud.com/xgsjx/opening-bass Moog Animoog however, is a fantastic bit of kit. But I'm not sure if you'd get as great a sound with a hardware controller as you do with the touchscreen. Another one under that category is Akai iMPC, but they do a controller for that called Fly. Alchemy is another good synth. THere's many good ones from Korg, Arturia & several others, but I've not tried them.
17.
Farts are universally hilarious... apart from the cats
I can totally agree with that. Last night one of my cats was laying beside me & let out a silent violent. There was only me & the 2 cats in the room & the other left, closely followed by me.
18. 2x12 is what I'd go with too, though I never struggled to get a good sound & be heard with a good 2x10. If you want height, you could go for 2 2x10/2x12s.
19.
They can be put together to make keyboards as long as you want, as they go edge to edge.
Now that's clever! Where do you get them in the UK?
20.
I have one of these - works pretty well http://miselu.com/c-24/
That has to be the coooolest iPad keyboard I've ever seen! If they make an 88 (or 73) key one it'll be on my "to buy" list.
21. I can play "Hit Me...", but I'm about 5 BPM too slow. I've tried, but it's gonna take me a good bit more practice to get there. I found out that I can play Nutbush City Limits last week. Listened to the Jo & Beth version, picked up my bass & played along. I started singing along too, but both my cats started clawing at me.
22.
Delete the 's' from "https" at the front end of the address (http).
Cheers my good sir.
23. Akai make a keyboard controller for the iPad. Slide your iPad into it & use the 1/4 jacks on the unit for output. Plays whatever synths you have on your iPad.
24. http://youtu.be/Tk-5RVMerfI I'm struggling with getting Youtube videos to embed for some reason.
25. Is the MAG300 a combo? Are you looking for another combo or are you after a head & cab?
