Pau Ferro, aka iron wood. As long as it doesn’t go rusty, what’s the problem? I believe it’s very durable and makes for a great fretless fingerboard.

It's down to the individual's interpretation really. There might be a starting point, sometimes it might be left to the musicians to decide where to start playing from. Sometimes there are bits that the composer wants played, but it might down to the performer to decide when - or it might not

That’s really weird. Like you say, the whole point of graphic score is that each person will have their own interpretation of them.

They were very sticky. Quite horrible all round.

I tried a set of D’Addario half-wounds a few years ago. They were quite horrible. The low B sounded like it had been dug up during an excavation at Pompeii. The two replacements sent by D’Addario were exactly the same. Personally, I’d go for a bright sounding set of flats, something like Thomastiks.

I want to create graphic music scores like those in the photos attached. I’m in the final weeks of a composition PhD. I’ve composed a solo cello with electronics piece that I’d like to present as a graphic score interspersed with bits of standard notation. I've got some very scruffy hand drawn sketches that I want to redo. I’ve got Musescore, that doesn’t do what I want. Any recommendations would be most welcome. Must be Mac based. Thank you.

Yep. When I was at uni I was practicing for 14 hours a day most days. There was a guy there in my particular bass class who simply didn’t need to, he was the most gifted musician I’ve ever encountered. There’s a student at the music college I’m teaching at that is a phenomenally talented keyboard player. He’s only young, just late teens.

You have to remember there’s a difference between the average person's practice levels and someone like Bernard Edwards - I could have inserted a myriad of names here - they’re not constrained by having to go to work or other domestic issues. They’re either gigging, rehearsing or recording; either way, they’ll have a bass in their hands. There's also this mysterious innate talent that some people have.

I’ve played a lot of Chic’s stuff at one time or another. It’s just practice. Listen to some of Jaco’s or Stanley Clarke’s stuff; it’s a lot faster.
