  1. I would definitely opt for a MacBook, just based on my personal experience. I did an awful lot of my degree (music) work on the train, sat in a quiet area at uni, or in the coffee shop on Kilburn high street at break times. Mine is a 2012 MacBook Pro with just the basic 4GB of memory, and I've never had a problem using Logic Pro, sometimes running Logic and Sibelius at the same time as Safari.
  2. Apple do brilliant student discounts. I can't remember now what I got off my MacBook, but it made a huge difference in the price. I think Logic pro is also available at a discounted rate. Lots of the library manufacturers do generous discounts too. I've got a lot of stuff from the guys at Spitfire audio. I'd personally go MacBook, that would enable him to be able to work anywhere.

  6. Thanks for the info. The inlay is incredibly delicate, and a beautiful touch. it just adds to the luthier built feel of the instrument. There's no serial number on it, but there are other minor signs of age that you'd expect. I will drop Martin an email to see if he has any information that he can pass on, also to thank hi for building such amazing instruments.
  7. It is! I traded my Overwater 7 string for it, I fell in love with this Sei the minute that I saw it.

  9. Well actually a very old Sei, but absolutely beautiful none the less. Aquired recently in a trade on here, and just back today following a service, a refret and the installation of a new preamp. i would love to find out more of it's history, I really want to know exactly how old it is, I do know that it’s one of the first ones, judging by the exquisite binding around the fretboard, so it's at least 20 years old. i love the headless design. The ergonomics are fantastic. It balances superbly, and is an absolute joy to play. The different colour LEDs are a touch of pure genius.
  10. I don’t drink anyway, but drinking on stage to me at least seems very unprofessional, also though it seems like you don’t care somehow. Alcohol would surely affect how you play? I would possibly have a bottle of water on stage, I have been known to have coffee too, very rock and roll 😊.
  11. I play very lightly, I can play very fast too. It's just practice, ergonomics. I find that if you're 'digging in', then where can you go when you need to move up a gear?
  12. Steve Lawson with a fabulous synaesthetic artist by the name of Poppy Porter. Steve's music inspires Poppy's painting, which Steve then uses as graphic scores to influence his music. They're playing this coming Sunday evening at the Tower of song in Birmingham.
  13. Yes. I took possession of an amazing Sei 6 string headless a few weeks ago. It's currently being re-fretted by JD guitars in Birmingham. According to them ebony is very prone to drying out, and should be treated fairly often to prevent this.
  14. I use lemon oil. I was told 2 weeks ago by JD guitars that ebony has a tendency to shrink allowing the frets to pop out, so it should be regularly oiled.
  15. I wasn’t aware they made them, that’s their problem I think, they make and sell instruments that only appeal to a limited market. Looking on their website they seem aimed at either rock players or maybe blues or rock and roll. They have a few 5 string models, no 6 string basses. Like I said earlier, it’s not just blues or rock nowadays.
  16. Fewer student guitar players? That doesn’t bode well for bass only manufacturers then, not that I think that’s correct. I was only talking to someone on Friday about my experiences at university. I graduated in 2015, I was one of only 12 bass players in my year. We were easily outnumbered 4:1 by the guitarists. I think with Gibson it’s maybe more to do with their pricing point, quality control and models etc. I’ve never ever played a Gibson bass, I don’t think I can even name a particular model or a bass player who uses Gibson. That’s more me though. Other major builders have lots of models of both guitars and basses, basically a model of guitar or bass to suit the divergence of music that’s played nowadays, and to suit different people's budgets. Take Ibanez for example. They make fabulous basses, a student of mine plays a 6 string bass that he bought new for a ridiculous price, and the quality is amazing. They also make tremendous pro quality instruments that are equal to most custom instruments. It’s not all just blues and rock n roll afterall.

  22. It's just wood isn't it? It'll absorb moisture, especially in the UK In the summer it might release moisture.
