Sorry, but I couldn't get past the awful music, I had to switch it off almost straight away .
Oh dear is all I can say about my limited experience of these people, ordered some Hipshot tuners, chrome, tuners arrived 3 chrome and 1 chrome and satin upon contacting Bass direct there first suggestion was to send back the incorrect one and they would send me the correct one, now call me old fashioned but I think they should have immediately offered to rectify there mistake rather then asked for a return of an incorrectly supplied item.I also have just purchased a 5 string set of la Bella flat's cost £55 upon receiving the strings, pack of 4 and 1 separate I started by fitting the B sting, then when I opened the 4 string pack I found that the B string had black silk and the strings in the pack had red silks, tuning pegs and bridge as you can imagine it looked really crap, after calling Bass direct I was told that nobody had ever complained about this before but I could send my email address I they could inform me when they had a matching string in stock and I could by that, won't be using them again
I can see you'd be annoyed about the tuner, but the strings is just a cosmetic thing surely? It's also how they're manufactured, not the faulty of the shop. They're only a small shop, but I think they do do quite a lot of business, so mistakes every now and then are going to occur. The problem with this thread is that people come on and air these problems. I don't see a similar thread for Thomann, or the Bass gallery, or Guitar Guitar. I have no affiliation with the shop, I've used them many times, and not all of my dealings have been perfect, but it's how they're sorted out that matters, and everyone has been.

Learning scales is great, I always suggest not playing them in a linear 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 way though. For instance, if you're practicing C major, start with your open E string, then, F, then G etc, and work your way all along the fretboard as high as you can go. That way it's the scale that you're playing, not a series of notes in a pattern. This also helps with improving your knowledge of the fretboard. It's good too, to see how bass lines are devolved from scales, examine a bass line you can play, and see how it's constructed.
If there was any more a reason to ensure you have a contract for a gig, this is a good one. For future reference, join the MU who offer template contracts to print out for venues to sign prior to playing the gig.
I was about to say this. They'll also take up the case for you if you didn't get paid. Not to mention the included gear insurance, and the included public liability insurance, and the free regular workshops and the diary .
On a serious note, and to be really dull. . . . I don't believe how many of us are still playing Russian roulette (with a fully loaded gun) with our hearing. For anyone who doesn't like the sound of what they hear through ear plugs. . . guess what. . . that's better than you're going to hear normally if you carry on without hearing protection.
Quite. It's obviously not meant to be an accurate hearing test, it's a bit of fun, it does say 'lets play'. I think what it does hopefully demonstrate though, especially if you're younger and maybe struggling to hear the higher frequencies that you should maybe think about hearing protection.
-
I think it's based on the fact that you tend to lose the ability to head certain frequencies as you age. It's obviously not totally accurate.
-
I found this quite good. I have the hearing of someone under 25. I do, and always have looked after my hearing though. I try and protect it, avoiding loud noises etc. I've always worn earplugs at gigs and when playing with bands, and I've refused in the past to rehearse with bands that rehearse too loudly. No reason not to at all. I've done loads of calibrations with people this way. I tend to use We Transfer to send files, compress them first though.
Thanks guys. I'm a little bit wary of the folding base types as its a lot if weight on whatever the folding mechanism is. I've not bought my rig yet but in my budget it may well end up being a non neo 4x10 and I like Gallien Krueger gear. Would the Thoman ones cope?
To give some idea, on mine as shown in the photo on Saturday, I had my pedalboard in it's case, and 10 pedals, plus a Voodoo Labs power supply, a very heavy Dunlop volume pedal, a Phil Jones Double 4 combo and it's power supply and a box of cables and leads. My old one that eventually broke a month ago, was a drop down base type, that wasn't anywhere near as well made as my Millennium,, that carried my Markbass 1x12 combo all over the country, and had carried my double bass on the train to London, and on the tube around London
Could I jump in on this thread, I won't make a mess I've had trolleys with folding wheels and broke them very quickly. What I have in mind is fixed base, standard sack trolley with big wheels but collapsible handle to get in taxi's/busses but with a long enough handle for me, being 6'3" Does such a thing exist?
I bought one of these from Thomann. https://www.thomann....rolley_370977_1 I'm not quite as tall as you, I'm 6. I used it for the first time on a gig down to Bristol last weekend. I got a lift to the railway station, on and off trains and had a walk of about a mile. It was fantastic. It comfortably held my PJB combo, pedal board etc. It's got a nice long front section too, to take a decent load.
We all love a bit of exaggeration re the weight. Sure they are not lightweight compared to the class D stuff
The Trace Elliot 1048 4x10 cab weighs 40kg, which is the equivalent of 4 Markbass combos, and is 15kg heavier than a Markbass 4x10. -
Glad there is loads of nostalgic love for TE. Back in the late 90's and early 2000's I was always intrigued by trace due to adverts in bassist magazine with my bass bass heroes such as Stuart Zender playing with various TE stacks. I liked the colour green and liked the look of their stuff. I tried on many occasions either trying other bands amps at gigs or at the bass centre to get on with a variety of Trace amps and cabs, but always went running back to my hartke rig or lusted after David Eden stuff, both of which gave me the tone I wanted. Something I could never achieve with A TE set up
A David Eden rig was something I always wanted. The players that I admired were always photographed with one in Bassplayer magazine adverts. There was an old and much battered one at a studio I was in a few years ago, it sounded magnificent! -
Do they do a lithium ion battery in pp3 format?
What would your bass sound like if you made it passive and used a preamp pedal.
I don't know tbh, there's no bypass switch, it's either active or not working .

Thanks for all the replies. Lot's of guys seem here, and on Facebook seem to like the Lithium Eneloops, so I think I'm going for a few of those .

There was one in a studio I used to frequent. It had this inherent sound that I just didn't like, and no matter what I did, I couldn't get rid of it. It also weighed about as much as the average family home, complete with the average family. I think I'll stick to my shoebox sized Phil Jones combo -
It's true that a rechargeable won't last as long as a dry cell, and that I'm not gigging with mine, but I use one rechargeable for my active basses (a Cort fiver. and a Douglas six-string..) and my guitar pedals (various Boss-type stuff...). I don't use 'em at the same time, so only need the one. Not used every day, either, but I'm only charging it up every six months or so; it's never clapped out on me whilst playing. If I was gigging, I'd do the same, but have a charged-up spare, just in case, and maybe charge up the night before. It's been a very, very long time (several decades...) since I last bought a 9v battery..!
I'm quite well organised, and worry a lot. I think I'd get into the habit of recharging them all every night before a gig. It just seems a wast of money throwing stuff away, when I can use re-chargeables, but it's not too environmentally friendly.
I'm using eneloop and 7-day-shop's own brand AAs, AAAs and PP3s. But not for bass preamp batteries. They seem to be lasting literally years, even for basses I play a lot.
Not for bass preamp? I was looking at the 7 day shop ones on Amazon earlier. Even factoring in that I'd need to buy a charger, I'd pretty soon get my money back.
These will do the job ... Ebay: Energizer HR22 ... I use a Leckium version; they last quite a while before needing recharging. Best to have two or more, though, if running low is a possibility, so as to always have one charged up, ready to go (Ever Ready..? )
Thanks , I was planning on getting 3, so I'd have a spare.

They're 9 volt rectangular batteries. I'm getting maybe 2 months use.
Yes! Eneloop!!
Do you know if they're Amazon's own?

Any recommendations as to which are the best and most reliable? An effort to try and reduce our unsustainable, throw it away lifestyle. I've been using Duracell Industrial batteries in my bass and my ebow, I know I do an awful lot of playing, but they don't see to last. The battery went in my bass on Sunday afternoon, a bit annoyingly because I didn't have a spare. I hadn't realised that my brother had appropriated the last two in the box, and left the empty box in the cupboard. I got there and the cupboard was bare, as the old nursery rhyme goes .
This is all great, and thank you all for engaging, but I feel we’re rambling away from the question. I’m not interested in how to play You Can Call Me Al, great though it is. What I’m asking is what set-up I can use to create that bass sound. What equipment and what effects and what settings will make that sound?
I think you'd need to be him, it's how he plays.
