It's absolutely nothing to do with being professional or otherwise. It's all to do with practicability and money. If I'm catching the train to Bristol for a solo gig, like I am in a few weeks, I'm not going to be able to take 2 of everything with me, and yes I said a solo gig, so even more important that everything works. I recently played 2 gigs in a Paris, it's just not practical or cost effective to have 2 of everything. I own one bass, one of each pedal, one amp, one MacBook. Imagine the expense of duplicating that? But, I lpoj after everything that I use, I do carry spare leads and batteries. I've never ever broken a string and can't ever see it happening. One thing I am going to start carrying a spare of is my Ebow, I dropped it after my last set in Paris. I managed to fix it and glue back together, but I do need a spare. What size venues are you guys playing? To be able to store all this spare gear, amps and basses in cases. With my jazz gigs there's often just about enough room for the band. I certainly wouldn't be leaving spare stuff in a car in the car park.

Fur me st least membership is extremely useful. I wanted a dbs check for my teaching. You can't do this as an individual, but the MU will do it for you. There's also the free insurance which is good. They did help me a few years ago with a contact too. They also do regular seminars and workshops that you can attend.

This is why I won't have anything bigger than a pedal shipped to me. Even if it requires a day out somewhere, I'd rather that than risk all of this. I recently went from Birmingham to Carlisle to collect my Overwater. I had a nice day out with my mom and dad, and the train fare was only £35.
The 4th fret of a string tuned to Ab is a C, surely? The 5th fret of a string tuned to A is a D, isn't it? Neither are Db
Yes.
I would respectfully suggest he wants YOU to change so he can watch your hands to get clues re chords, when I use my E string detuner for certain songs, it drives my guitarist nuts as he can't get his head around what I'm playing!!
Try playing a 6 or a 7 string bass, that really does throw them .
D'Adarrio do a wound 0.024 in their 12-52 set of Chromes for guitar, so you should be able to buy this as a single. Their guitar strings are supposed to be 1M long, which may just be long enough. p.s. Status still don't have flats in stock, so I don't think you will have any joy there.
Brilliant thanks! I'm currently using a plain string along with a set of Thomastik flats, it just doesn't quite sit right.
Thought of using a Baritone string? Mine is a 30" scale, so you could probably find one that would work.
Thanks, I'll try that. I've emailed a few specialist shops asking for details of their strings.

The synchronised dancing looks very corny, the bass player looks rather cool though.
Actually, the name is the only thing about it that feels a little awkward to me, since I'm a vegetarian, but I'm trying to ignore it
Ha, I'm a vegan. I do love the names of some of the pedals though.

It doesn't exist if it's not stored in at least 3 places, or so was drummed into me at uni.

Conspiracies aside, which do you prefer?
OP here.. I agree that the maths/earth/chakra bollocks is, well exactly that. I can hear a difference between the two examples though and prefer the one called 432 simply because it sounded better to me. I also used to get frustrated by some of my old band members when I'd come in with a new piece in F# for example and they would say, "let's play it in G, it's easier to play it that way." I'd say but it sounds different in G, not as good. They'd insist it was the same and that it didn't matter. I don't think I have perfect pitch but I can certainly sense an emotional difference between different keys for some reason though. I took a quick perfect pitch test today and although I got about half wrong, the ones I did get right easily enough were at 415Hz - baroque tuning. Never heard of that before but it does suggest that I prefer my tones a bit lower than regular 440Hz concert pitch. Great, something new to geek out on! 🙃
Some songs definitely do sound better in certain keys. Maybe check out the Solfeggio frequencies too. -
D'Addario maybe? I use their strings, and have done for ages, both on 6 string bass with a high C, and a 7 string. They have quite a selection of gauges to choose from including both wound and plain C strings.

I have absolutely nothing to add to the discussion here, but I just love the name of this, Verellen Meatsmoke .
Think this is bogus. No one uses flats. Mandolin strings are too short. Most banjo strings are loop end. I have an Irish tenor set with a .028 wound 3rd and a 5 string set with an .024 wound 4th and they are both just under 1 metre long. Your best bet is to contact Newtone and ask them to make you some specials.
I've tried Newtone, they don't make flats. It needs to be 93cm from ball end to the silk. They do sell flat wound banjo strings, a loop end would be fine.

Before each set. If I've got new strings on I might check after a few songs too.
-
A slightly bizarre request . I'm still searching for a flat wound high F string. I was just reading a thread on a site, someone wondering why string manufacturers make mandolin and banjo strings almost twice as long as they need to be. So I'm wondering just how long are they? If anyone plays banjo or mandolin, and they happen to have a set of flat wound strings lying around, could they measure them please? The string gauge needs to be something like a .025, or thereabouts.

The Gary Willis website has some useful stuff too.

Any famous guitarists good at playing bass?
ambient replied to Jenny_Innie's topic in General Discussion
Good shout Also, the fellow from Galssjaw, forget his name but he played the bass on Worship And Tribute which has some great playing on it
I believe Nick Beggs has to learn Wilson's bass lines. -

Steven Wilson. Jimi Hendrix. -
Food for thought however; I was at the October Double Bass Bash last October and one member had a remarkably small speaker cab that would put Barefaced cabs to shame. It may have been a lot heavier however as it used multiple small drivers, say four or five inch cones. I think there were about six or eight in an array. I looked for the hidden sub but there was none!
That sounds like a Phil Jones cab.
Hey Si, I'm just drafting a tech support ticket for them this morning. I'm trying to describe what's been happening in a more useful way than "it just stopped working and I don't know why" which is kinda what happened but not useful for a support tech! I'll go over all the symptoms I mentioned above and see what they come back with. I'll update this thread with the results (most likely mid next week hopefully as they won't pick anything up until Monday at the earliest). That will be SiBob Great to hear yours got sorted - that gives me some hope for mine. Although I do still have concerns that there will never be any driver updates or optimisations for it.
I got it sorted, but did end up selling it. It was very fussy, it liked to be plugged in after launching Logic Pro. I ended up buying an Apogee One, which sounds just as good, and works seamlessly.

I had one of these. One of the members on here is part of their technical support team. He was brilliant at helping me to get it sorted out.
