It's a brilliant combo. It sounds amazing with everything I'm doing, my solo stuff and my jazz stuff.
Will check via Amazon. Did everything go okay with it ie any hidden charges. ? Dave
They were excellent. At the time whatever I bought was a lot cheaper than elsewhere, though that was before Sterling plummeted.

Via Amazon last year.
Using the Markbass eq I haven't been able to dial up a good punchy sound, it's strange, there's so many much variety on there with the VLE/VPF etc. I'm now thinking I've been eq-ing the bass wrongly, when I walked out on the last two gigs it's had so much punch and presence with the mid switched in. I agree though, there be too much fiddling, I've tended to run everything flat if I can, I hate getting too technical with it but this time seems to have been a lucky mistake!
I'm prettty sure the markbass stuff is pretty flat, so you get out what you put in. Where a lot of guys go wrong is they cut the mids. It the mid range frequencies that give you the punch and ability to be heard in a band sound.
I was doing this on my amp (Markbass LM3) and when I walked out it sounded very nasally, the amp is now relegated to being an amp only, all tone control is handled by my Hartke vxl pedal and now the mid control on the bass. All good fun!!
How did it sound in a full band context though ? I think too many people fiddle endlessly with the tone controls on their gear, then complain that their amps aren't loud enough or whatever.

I think the general consensus of opinion is, therrr being so many variables regarding strings, gauge, metal type, winding type, manufacturer etc. That it's accepted the buyer will fit new ones anyway.

I'd love to use a tablet at gigs. I plan to buy a iPad soon. My main bands repertoire is something like 90 songs. The actual set list depends on the venue. We have a choice of 3 vocalists who all sing in different keys, so there's 3 different arrangements for each vocal number. We're currently adding new songs to that too, because we've got new residencies offered us recently. At rehearsal on Wednesday morning we ran through about 20 new ones. So my folder contains something like 200 charts, an iPad will make things a lot easier. I'm totally gig ready, I can read pretty much anything.

How many times have you used a public loo and seen someone finish, and just walk out without washing their hands ? The first thing I do when buying a used bass is strip it down, clean it and put new strings on.
-
Just play a 6, best of both worlds. There's a symmetry to a 6 string, the centre 4 strings being a normal 4 string bass. If you're used to playing a 5 in normal low B tuning then that's there, with the bonus of a high C.

I thought he'd settled for having a karaoke ? -
I've met him a few times, he was a visiting tutor at my uni. He was a really nice guy, always had time to talk and take questions. An immense talent too. Maybe people in real life are different to their online personae ?
He used to post here. . . until the knuckle draggers chased him away.

But he is up his own arse...
Which is why this is only the 2nd time in about a month that I've visited this site.

Neck Through or Bolt on, is there any practical difference?
ambient replied to Pinball's topic in General Discussion
It'd be interesting to compare a neck through bass, with an instrument with exactly the same hardware, electronics, strings and wood etc, but with a bolt on neck. -
Whatever you do choose to do, just make sure it doesn't interfere with what really matters, i.e. the music. Personally I'd rather hear the song played well, rather than see someone looking daft, and playing all the wrong notes.

How old are you ? That really needs to be taken into account, especially if you have relatives coming along. They may never talk to you again 😊.

I can't speak about the videos, but much of pop music for the last 30 years has been pants anyway. I had the misfortune to be a passenger in a car with the radio tuned to radio 2 the other day. The Scottish guy going, Steve Wright on the journey back. What a load of absolute rubbish. I can't believe the number of elderly 'stars' who seem to have records put at the moment. It's coming up to Christmas I guess. Most weren't very good years ago. I mean, shaking Stevens !

Downloading Band Videos from Facebook
ambient replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
If you own it, just click on 'options', that will give you the option to download it. -
Where's the like button ! 😀

I've only owned one bass for a few years now. Mainly fir financial reasons. I'm doing a post-grad MMus course that I'm paying for myself. My one bass is a beautiful 21 year old Yamaha TrbJP 6 string. The previous bass was s fretless Roscoe 6 string. There's absolutely nothing whatsoever wrong with just owning one bass. It's what you do with it that counts.
My opinion of them is founded in the 80s when they picked up local cab firms and at pro theatres with Sure pro wireless microphones ££££. I'm guessing technology has really moved on in the last few years and it may be time to look at them again. I suspect pros don't have a lot of time for experimenting. They stick with what works and unless there is a real need to change then if it ain't broke; don't fix it.
I think that's it, especially with the older guys that I play with, if it's not broken. They know their instruments and gear too, intimately, through hours and hours of playing daily.
I often think about this too. I have never in my puff had a bass stop working. I've never seen a brass player (for example) take a spare. I put it into the same bracket as people taking 2 4x12 Marshall stack to play in the local boozer, or folk that have wireless systems who never move an inch from where their pedals are. All the gear, no idea. Reaks of amateurism to me. Obviously if there is a functional need for a different bass (different tuning for example) then it's fair play.
Wireless systems on stages no bigger than the average hearth rug always make me smile . The three guys I'm gigging with tonight have almost a century and a half of professional playing between them. The guitarist will turn up with the same guitar and amp that he's been using for 30 years or more. The keyboard player uses a nice Yamaha stage piano that he's had for a few years, into a Roland combo. The drummer uses a beautiful little Ludwig jazz kit that he's been playing probably since I was a child. Their outlook is kind of like mine. They take what they need. What will fit in the usually confined space we're given to play in, and what can be carried in, assembled, then disassembled with the minimum of fuss. They're generally out playing at least 4 nights a week. I've seen some of the worlds top guys playing. People like Matt Garrison, Anthony Jackson, Laurence Cottle, Mike Stern, Janek Gwizdala, John Patitucci, John Schofield, Jonas Hellborg. They're on stage with one instrument, plugged into an amp. I figure if it's good enough for them. If you're lucky enough to be able to afford a multitude of gear, with spares for everything then great. Me I can't. It doesn't make you more, or me less professional though. Being professional isn't having the ability to own a load of gear.
-
Beautifully put.
I'd also need a lottery win to finance my MMus which is why I own just what I need .
-
It's weird how you see on threads like this, about taking spare basses and amps etc, often citing the 'professionalism' of it. I'm a professional musician. I only own one bass, albeit it a very nice one, I also own just one amp. Everyone I play with is either a pro or semi-pro, and with the exception of the sax players I play with, they all just take one instrument along. Most times there's not room for spare stuff. I own one instrument that's well cared for and maintained. I did a solo bass gig on Friday, one bass, one amp, one ebow, one MacBook etc 😊.
-
Have you ever broken a string ? Has your amp ever stopped working ? Has one of your pickups ever broken ? I own one bass, one amp, one ebow etc, etc. Don't worry, just enjoy what you do.

So as you play away from left to right, the pitch increases I guess, similar to on a piano, and other classical instruments like cello and violin. It just seems logical to me.
