1. A friend of mine's wife teaches the Alexander technique. It may be worth contacting them and finding out the details of your local teacher and see if they can hep at all ? 2. One of my students is 17, his first bass was a 6 string. There's no need to progress from 4 to 5 etc. I keep saying this, but I would recommend at least a coupe of lessons, just so you get the technique right.
3.
Are these still available??
They are indeed 😊
4.
Never ceases to amaze me the amount of Fender bashing by those who have obviously played every single one made
That's the problem though isn't it. One in a shop can be amazing, the other 25 in the same shop appalling.
5. What's the action like on your bass ?
6. Lessons would be a good idea. They may be able to see something that you're doing that's impeding your fretting hand from working efficiently.
7. I've not done one of these for a few months. This is an edit of piece for a rather special project that I'm involved in. I'm being filmed next week playing this in a gallery in London. Absolutely no groove, it's bound to be too quiet, and it's rather sad sounding. https://soundcloud.c...-a-lonely-place
8. I've had two USA 5 strings. A Marcus Miller and a USA standard. Neither were particularly brilliant. The construction was very poor, especially on the Marcus Miller which would have been really expensive when new. They were string through, and had little metal cups on the back of the body for the string ball ends to fit in. These weren't fixed and would fall out. The neck pockets were both cut badly, they were too big and cut at an angle. Sound wise the MM was the better of the two, the pre was actually quite nice.
9.
^ Quote not working on this connection.. I'm satisfied....Well its not like the Mesa Boogie walkabout / Phil Jones Bass 14x5" setup that I now use is second division stuff and I've found spending time refining my playing pays me more dividends that refining my tone plus there's only so much time in the day.
I love the clarity and portability of my PJB Double 4. What I'm after is retaining that clarity, but adding a nice valve organicness (new word) to it, but a lot, lot cheaper than the Jules Monique . Has anyone tried both the Jules Monique and the Dave Hall VT1 ?
10.
Would it be too controversial to suggest that their real creative genius didn't come from Liverpool at all?
I'm not a fan, and was born long after they split up. I do think that the 'beatles' probably wouldn't have been so groundbreaking if any single one of them hadn't been there. What really did any of them do afterwards, besides the odd moment here and there ? I also agree strongly with the above comment.
11. One of my students has one. He's 17, it was his first ever bass.
12. This is why I recommend lessons when you first start out. It can save a lot of stress, anger and frustration. It's also a lot easier to ask a teacher what may be a silly question, rather than posting it on the internet. I've been asked some very 'silly' questions over the years. But these were questions that the student needed to know the answer to.
13.
Not so good then. What did you get as a replacement? Cheers
I have a Protec Contego. It's heavier than the Mono, but waaaaaay better. It's kind of a semi rigid gig bag, whereas the Mono is just padding, albeit quite good padding.
14. I had one for a year or so. There's very little in the way of containment for anything other than the bass. There's a large flat zip pocket on the front, but you won't get anything in there except for a cable or a book of charts. There's nowhere to carry tuners, or a strap etc. Also the piping or whatever you call the stuff that runs around the seems split all the way around.
15. They're brilliant pickups. Used by pretty much all of the top boutique bass builders.
16. Unused stainless steel set. Gauges 130, 105, 085, 065, 045. £16.50 posted.
17. I once told someone that I had a police record. The look on his face was comical. I then said Synchronicity. He hadn't heard of it. Cue rather embossing explanation that it was the name of an album by a band called the police.
18. I know a bass playing fireman.
19.
Quite tempted to give these a try. I occasionally use drop D - anyone use them with this? Do they hold tension/tone well detuned?
They're quite low tension.
20. ERBs always get the same reaction. I think your bass looked amazing. I'd love to try something with more than 6 strings.
21.
I think he has extremely effective PR working for him
Hope they get paid up front !
22. Maybe he's Ill ? At the same time even if he is ill, he surely has advisors. Also like someone pointed out on Facebook, it's pretty unusual to just wake up one morning owing $53 million. There was a point where it was 'only' $5 million etc, etc.
23.
By "floppy" I mean low tension. Thanks for tip on the deal.
Yeah, I've read before that they're low tension. I've never had a chance to compare them with others though. I've also only ever used them on 35" scale basses, so that may make a difference.
24. I've never seen a black one, and they usually have matching headstocks.
25.
.... nice! string spacing 18 / 19mm ?
I think it's something like 21mm.
