The ones I'd love to go to are invariably miles away. The ones that I have no intention of going to are usually just down the road.

MTD Kingstons are amazing basses, and well within your budget.

A student of mine has an Ibanez 6 string that's amazing for what he paid for it. I should imagine the 5 string would be as good. Personally I'd go somewhere like Bass direct and try as many as you can. One person's great bass is another's awful bass.

I've had loads of gear off them in the past. I think in future I'll phone them, and make sure what I'm ordering is actually in stock in the UK.

I think Andertons are a real shop, albeit one that has a good and reliable internet presence too. I like the planet waves ones. They're a good price and very reliable.

I read somewhere that they tested a Markbass LM2 on some sort of scientific device, and basically what went in, came out. It was practically level. So I'd say Markbass.

I've never understood why people dislike him. He does exactly what hundreds bass players do, that's play what's required for the song. Songs that millions of people around the world buy, and flock to see in concert.

That's nice ! I did some music back in December for a drama at uni, that was my first time doing something like that. It's really good to get and do new stuff. I think you've done a really great job. It'd be nice to hear it in the context that it was written, if that's possible.

I like what Eno said, which is something my tutor at uni mentioned in my final project feedback, he called it music designed not to be listened to. There's a very fine line though, between it being how I like it, and it really being too quiet. I know that I do sometimes fall on the wrong side of that line. I've started listening back to stuff on my phone, through headphones. I sent some stuff to someone over the weekend. She was interested in doing something with me. She was complaining that she couldn't hear it all. Turns out she was trying to listen back to it through the speaker on her iPhone.

They've refunded the shipping charge too, so I got a 6 string set of TI flats, delivered for £54. That's £26 cheaper than from Strings direct.

Have to say, as much as I admire the technique, it doesn't really do anything for me. Fretless to me is about the sound, and articulation of the notes, not about the number of them per minute.

They're definitely not like 'normal' flats. There's no thump, they're mellow, that's how I would describe them. For solo playing, you can get an almost classical guitar like sound from them.

I'm in Sutton Coldfield, I did the level 6 rock school licentiate thing as part of the final year of my BMus. Feel free to PM me, I can do Skype if you wish. I don't charge for a 20 minute lesson for basschat members. I've done a bit of teaching on here using Skype.

How long does each course take, and how many hours ? I finished my BMus degree last year. My first year I had maybe 20 hours a week contact time. We were expected to do at least that again at home. In reality it was a lot more, I probably spent another 30 hours a week at home practicing and other work. It'd be a lot of work doing something the equivalent of a degree, whilst working full time. Unless you can break it down into smaller modules spread over a period of time. I'm currently doing a part time MMus. I have one 2 hour lecture a week, I totally misjudged the amount of work outside of that.

Brilliant strings, by far my favourite. Get them from DV247 or Thomann though. Strings direct are charging £80 for a 6 string set, DV247 and Thomman are charging £54.
