1. I think a set list is good if you know what your audience is. The jazz band that I mentioned earlier, he calls songs depending on what the audience is liking. Same as the singer that I played for. The Jazz band has quite a few residencies. With these gigs you never know what crowd you're gonna get in.
2. Do they offer a 3 year warranty like Thomann ?
3.
There are gigging bands that don't write setlists?
My regular jazz band gig, the guy just calls out the tunes as and when, depending on how the gig is going. There was a gig that I used to do a few years ago. It was a reading gig for a function band. The singer had a pad of tunes, each one numbered. She knew what number every song in her repertoire was, so she'd call out "number 39" for instance, knowing what it'd be. She'd call out a song depending on how the gig was going. If people were up and dancing, then she'd call another dance type song, if it looked like they were getting tired then it'd be something slower. It worked well for her. JK from Jamiroquai is renowned for that too, the band have to be prepared to play whatever JK feels like playing. Must be a nightmare .
4.
Yup...I think that's my money gone then. Oh well. At least it was only £30. Shame of it is the Octave pedal I've got from him (not directly of course!) is pretty dirty and sounds great. He just needs to sort all the business side of things out doesn't he :/
Why can't you get your money back ?
5. The ones I'd love to go to are invariably miles away. The ones that I have no intention of going to are usually just down the road.
6.
Seems like he got the better deal with you. There you are, you don't even need to close your eyes. The images are there and the music fits perfectly. Good job. Nice one for the CV.
Thanks . It was fun doing it.
7. MTD Kingstons are amazing basses, and well within your budget.
8. A student of mine has an Ibanez 6 string that's amazing for what he paid for it. I should imagine the 5 string would be as good. Personally I'd go somewhere like Bass direct and try as many as you can. One person's great bass is another's awful bass.
9. I was approached by someone recently, and asked to write some music for a short film. He wanted Brian Eno, but he was too expensive . It starts about 5 minutes in. http://vimeo.com/154570373
10.
Well, come to Bromley and see the show! But if you can't: just as the music comes to an end, a man from 2039 surrounded by umbrellas screams out in anguish, and a fish falls from the sky at his feet.
That sounds very Douglas Adams'ish. I think I'd like that .
11. I've had loads of gear off them in the past. I think in future I'll phone them, and make sure what I'm ordering is actually in stock in the UK.
12. I think Andertons are a real shop, albeit one that has a good and reliable internet presence too. I like the planet waves ones. They're a good price and very reliable.
13. I read somewhere that they tested a Markbass LM2 on some sort of scientific device, and basically what went in, came out. It was practically level. So I'd say Markbass.
14. I've never understood why people dislike him. He does exactly what hundreds bass players do, that's play what's required for the song. Songs that millions of people around the world buy, and flock to see in concert.
15. That's nice ! I did some music back in December for a drama at uni, that was my first time doing something like that. It's really good to get and do new stuff. I think you've done a really great job. It'd be nice to hear it in the context that it was written, if that's possible.
16.
As I hear it I would not change anything. Good use of layers. More of that. To those who don't get ambient think of it this way. Ambient is not about drums or beats or tunes generally. Steve Lawson describes it as film music without the film. Try closing your eyes and putting your own images to it. See what happens.
Thanks for listening, and for the kind comment. I like what Eno said, which is something my tutor at uni mentioned in my final project feedback, he called it music designed not to be listened to. There's a very fine line though, between it being how I like it, and it really being too quiet. I know that I do sometimes fall on the wrong side of that line. I've started listening back to stuff on my phone, through headphones. I sent some stuff to someone over the weekend. She was interested in doing something with me. She was complaining that she couldn't hear it all. Turns out she was trying to listen back to it through the speaker on her iPhone.
17.
You may as well have ordered the strings from Thomann, and they would have turned up sooner.
Yeah, I only notices that after I'd already ordered. Still, they're arrived today. That's 5 days from Germany, including the weekend. My annoyance was that I was lead to believe that they'd be coming from the UK. Their website did say they were in stock at various branches, there was no mention of them having to come from Germany. They've refunded the shipping charge too, so I got a 6 string set of TI flats, delivered for £54. That's £26 cheaper than from Strings direct.
18. Have to say, as much as I admire the technique, it doesn't really do anything for me. Fretless to me is about the sound, and articulation of the notes, not about the number of them per minute.
19.
And if you're careful and play close to the neck, you can get a fair upright bass sound, too.
Yes, yes and yes . I did a lot of gigs with a set on my Modulus, and got a lovely double bass like sound.
20.
I love it. Beautiful.
Thanks .
21. They're definitely not like 'normal' flats. There's no thump, they're mellow, that's how I would describe them. For solo playing, you can get an almost classical guitar like sound from them.
22. There should be a site rule about posting basses like this for sale on here.
23. I googled him to find out who he was. Apparently my nan likes him.
24. i thought this was going to be a thread about the Pirates of Penzance or something 😊
25. I'm in Sutton Coldfield, I did the level 6 rock school licentiate thing as part of the final year of my BMus. Feel free to PM me, I can do Skype if you wish. I don't charge for a 20 minute lesson for basschat members. I've done a bit of teaching on here using Skype.
