I too wondered what OM was. I figured it out after the first post. The couple I've been to seem to just be singer/songwriter type things, with singer/songwriters playing acoustic guitar singing about the usual.

An effect isn't really going to fill out the sound. My advice would be to listen to trios playing music that you like, and work out what they do when the guitar player is soloing. I'm guessing that you'll discover that there's a different bass part than during the rest of the song. it's down to arranging your parts together. It's also possibly just you having to get used to your part being isolated, since you've only recently switched to a 3 piece. Whatever you do, you don't want to detract from what the guitarist is doing, it's 'his' solo.

It's a very sad occasion, and something that I never expected to have to do. This is one bass that I always wanted to own, and never wanted to have to sell. However, I'm currently doing a MMus in composition at Goldsmith's in London. It's an amazing course, and is really helping me with my compositional work. You can't get student loans for postgrad courses, so I'm having to finance the course myself, which is a struggle. My only income is from some private teaching, and gigs. The bass is an amazing instrument, and was built by Modulus in 1999, making it 16 years old. I have owned it for the last 3 years. It is in amazing condition. When I bought it I though it was maybe 2 or 3 years old, I was truly shocked when I had it dated via the serial number. It is an alder body, with quilted maple facing. A 24 fret carbon fibre neck. Bartolini pickups, and a custom made John East preamp, the John made for me to accommodate the existing holes that were in the body from the previous pre. It has a 35" scale length, and 17mm string spacing at the bridge. The action is ridiculously low, lower than on any wooden necked bass that I have ever played. It is currently strung with Thomastik flat wound strings. It comes with a Modulus Hardcase. I can't afford to lower the price, this is a bargain. If it doesn't sell then I will be taking it to either Bass direct or one of the other specialist shops to sell for me. Collection is preferred, though I can also meet for train fare. The only trades would be for a 6 string bass of approximately £1000 in value, plus cash to me. Possibly a Yamaha TRB or JP model ? I have no interest in basses with less than 6 strings. Fretless bass welcome too, as long as they have 6 strings. This is a photo from when I bought it, I will post some new photos in the next couple of days. I may end up having to sell my Modulus to pay towards my MMus fees. I'm probably going to be listing it on here in the next couple of days. I haven't had much luck in the past though when selling 6 string basses on here. So I was thinking of maybe taking it to a shop, to sell on commission for me. Has anyone done this, what are the benefits ?

Recently I've been listening to Harold Budd. His piano playing is nothing short of exquisite. Just piano, his more ambient stuff is beautiful, but I prefer just his piano playing on it's own.

[/quote] So they're not the same as everyone else's just upside down. You've got the A, D and G switched. Your heaviest string is next to your lightest string ? My tutor had his tuned G, D, A, E (. Jimmy Haslip has his the same, but now plays a 6, so his C string is top most. Both play left handed.

An electric one . I think it depends on your personal tonal goals. A lot depends on how you play. I've heard people play my bass, and it sounds different to when I play it. I personally like John Myung's sound in recent Dream Theater recordings, that's a 6 string Musicman Bongo, that has 5 string, string spacing. There are also a couple of Prog metal bands that I like who use a fretless.

I have a Protec Contego, which I think is a little shorter than the Mono that I used to have. It's a better case too.

My charts have always ended up covered in notes, and exclamation marks etc. They tend to change too when you get to technical rehearsal.

How will you keep changing the pages ? The few show things I've done have been using the traditional printed pages, that can be challenging where page turns are concerned, but surely an iPad you'd have considerably more.

What I find odd, and it's not just with bass players, in fact I think guitarists are worse, is that they don't learn to sight-read from the start. Most players of 'classical instruments' learn reading as they're learning to play. For me, I played violin before I played bass, and learned at read music as I was learning to play. So when I took up bass, even though I was self taught to start with on bass, I automatically learned the notes on the fretboard, and in bass clef. I didn't realise you could play without having to read music.

I find play a 5, or a 6 in my case, makes sight reading easier, simply because it means I don't have to worry about position shifts, I can concentrate on the chart.
