1. No, you're only as good as.........you. If you're being let down by the drummer, then you need to take control, communicate during the performance, and if he's doing something wrong, then lead the rhythm section, don't just follow him. I played a jazz gig recently with a dep drummer who kept speeding up, so I kept looking at her and signalling to slow down, and take her timing off me. Steve Gadd and Anthony Jackson are probably my favourite rhythm section, I love what they did with Michel Pettrucciani.
 2.
To download Logic itself without the additional content took about 20 mins tops, but then I have really excellent broadband. For the additional content, I set it to download & went to bed, then this morning I set it to download the additional instruments & went to work. 5pm can't come soon enough!
Ha that's what I did, left it overnight 😊 have fun I love it !
 3.
That's me just downloaded Logic. Bedtime now, so I'll play with it tomorrow.
How long did it take to download ? When I got Pro X last year it took about 9 hours, but that's probably my rubbish broadband I think for what you get, it's extremely good value. They also give updates with extra sounds for nothing too, but maybe they all do that ? There was a recent upgrade that gave a whole load more sounds and instruments that I haven't gotten around to downloading yet.
 4. Nice ! Someone told me a few years ago that U2 recorded some tracks off one of their albums on Garageband. It's great software.
 5. If it's a band, then maybe your drummer could trigger them ? http://www.alesis.com/controlpad
 6. What Modulus are you getting ? They're my favourite basses I switch strings depending on what I'm doing. For jazz gigs I have a set of Thomastik flats, they're nice on my solo stuff too. At the moment I have a set of very light (100, 80, 60, 40, 032, 028) D'addario ProSteels on, for a more guitar'esque vibe.
 7. Nice ! I had a Clement 6 string fretless, it was beautiful.
 8. Stu just bought my Pedaltrain mini pedal board from me, it was a nice and easy transaction, absolutely hassle free
 9. Maybe try http://www.wdmusic.co.uk/ eBay ? http://www.touchstonetonewoods.co.uk
 10.
It's where people debate Nash vs the post Nash period , at least thats my guess
I'm still really none the wiser, but thanks 😊
 11. What's a hollies forum ?
 12. Maybe contact your local college, see of they do a media course, and ask if any of their students want to practice on you ?
 13.
This was a thread I did last month and has some useful info http://basschat.co.u...on-instruments/ End result, seems that home insurance generally won't cover instruments if you get paid for using those instruments, unless you lie about it.
Try getting car insurance if you tell them you're musician I think you just need to check the small print of your policy. Mine is insured via the MU.
 14. I've used a USB keyboard to do this, using samples in Logic Pro. Is it for live that you want to do it ?
 15. It's a technique I use a lot for playing jazz. It's definitely easier if you have the bass at the right height though. I don't use a strap, I play seated, which I find puts the bass at just the right level. I tend to use a combination of both my palm and forearm to mute, depending on whereabouts I'm playing (towards the neck, or closer to the bridge).
 16. I'm looking for a good wall mount bass hanger. So far I have found these on Amazon. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000OR2I4A?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MHLVU6I?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_2&smid=A583JTYHMX5I4 I like the look of the Stagg one, I don't want one that sticks out too far.
 17. I've never understood the one band only thing either. I think you did the right thing with choosing the originals band though. You can pretty much guarantee that the blues band will be playing ZZ Top, yaaaaaaaawwwwn , and the rock covers band will just be an excuse for an over-loud guitarist to do what over-loud guitarists usually do, and lets face it, does the world really need another rock covers band ?
 18.
Oh, what's up with that subscription thing with Pro Tools btw? Does it mean you have to renew (pay) every year or can you get away with just paying one time for the crossgrade? I'm on Pro Tools 10 (started with Garageband and moved on to PT) but having 2nd thoughts about upgrading... Logic seems fair enough, but it'll be hell to change platforms at this stage.
I believe you can just pay every month for it, a bit like Max MSP that I use, I just subscribe each month. I found Logic Pro to be very intuitive to use.
 19.
As soon as the drummer gets going...to any degree that you'd want him to... then a sound that is just there is a waste of time. This will rule out most combos under 80-100 watts and tbh, their EQ is likely to be crappy anyway.
Depends entirely on the situation. My double four is easily loud enough to cope with 5 piece jazz bands, with keys and vocals both through the pa.
 20.
Why would anyone pay £100 for a poor amp/combo just to play at home. A little class D and a cab wouldn't up up any room.. outperform most pratice amps by miles and you could amp it up at a gig and still get reasonable performance. The 60w or less combo has one use.. the bedroom..which is fine if that is all you do, but useless elsewhere, IMO.
Depends on the amp. My Phil Jones Double Four is tiny, about the size of a shoe box, but perfectly giggable for the average jazz gig, you wouldn't need anything else.
 21.
Well it looks like a decent Audio interface. My comment about it being good was aimed at the latency figures you get from it. It you've got too much latency then you'll struggle to use it accurately live (aside from running tracks etc.) If you're getting low latency from it, then can't you use some of the outputs to run your macbook into the chaos pad and looper etc. You're looking for flexibility of running your Macbook and bass into different pedals etc. I'd look at using the Audio Interface 1st before spending any money. If that doesn't do what you want, then looking at something like a mixing desk or a custom router / loop / switching system might be your next options. Don't underestimate your Audio interface.
Hi, Thanks, but I think what I need is some means of switching between them, note I say I think Latency isn't an issue to be honest, I have recorded quite a few tracks straight into Logic via the MOTU, it's only recently that I've been using analog for the recording. I previously used a Focusrite Scarlett, that did sometimes have latency issues. This is for live work. I somewhat bizarrely have some gigs doing what I do. This is a very recent example, demonstrating the ambient backing tracks https://soundcloud.com/an-ending-ascend/26072015b
 22.
70 watt, though it's only driving two 4" speakers.
Sounds like you have the same as me, I use it for gigs too. Size isn't everything, as they say .
 23.
i think he is using the laptop just for playing samples, so just needs to worry about output latency. And if these are noise/non-rhythmical ambient noises that might not necessarily need to bother with latency at all.
Yep, that's right. They're field recordings made on my phone. I transfer them onto a loop on a Revox reel to reel and mess about with them, slow them down, reverse them etc.
 24.
I think you have 2 options. First is to use a mixing desc (something like this) that has 4 inputs and 2 aux sends. you want your bass (via fx) into channel 1, mac in 2, kaoss into 3 and looper into 4. Then aux 1 into the kaoss and aux 2 into looper. Use aux knob to send more/less to kaoss or looper. Second is to contact someone like bright onion pedals to make you up a custom looper (a bypass looper, not a phrase looper like you have). They should be able to build you a box that will let you send the signal where you want it controlled by foot switches. You could try using a bunch of ls2s(or alternatives), but i think itll probably be both cheaper and easier to get BOP to make you something.
That's great thanks for your help, much appreciated
 25.
out of interest are you using a decent audio interface with low latency and multiple ins/outs. I've seen some of your posts in the past and thought.... this guy needs a decent audio interface. I had just the same thought now. If you did you would have a lot of control over where and how you routed everything especially if a Macbook is already part of your set up.
I use a MOTU Ultralite MK3 Hybrid, is that good ? If you mean the lo-fi'ness, that's deliberate, I record onto tape first, then transfer that to Logic so I can upload that onto the internet.
