Hi James, this is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question. What I'd do (and what I mostly still do) is to set everything 'flat' (or what looks like flat) on your amp and guitar, i.e. everything in the 12 o'clock or centre-position. Then just concentrate on getting the volume level right. Over time you will know if you need to cut or boost any frequencies through experience. At this stage I'd leave the compressor out of the equation, that's a whole subject on its own right there. You may not even need to use it at all. There's no 'best' setting for an amp or bass EQ otherwise everyone would set their controls to it and that would be that! But they don't.
That's exactly what I do too. Just leave everything flat, and then play for a bit, and try and 'hear in you head', what you do or don't like about your sound. I'm amazed sometimes when I turn up at studios, and the amps tone controls are all over the place, I'm just left wondering how on earth the previous guy must have sounded. I personally just keep everything flat, and change playing position and style on the bass accordingly.

I would just use a chord chart then, and write above the chords the rhythm that you have to play, or maybe just learn any line ? Something like this maybe, where they've written the rhythm across the top ? I dep for a couple of jazz bands, and just use chords charts with the odd written head. When I was depping for bands a few years ago it was maybe 50/50 whether it was a reading gig or not. If there was no reading involved then I just used chord charts that I made up myself (just make sure beforehand about the key, software like Sibelius is great for chord charts, they look tidy and it's simples to change the key), or for songs with specific lines that I didn't know I made proper notation charts. A friend of mine has all his on his iPad, it's so simple to use. He just hooks it up to his laptop and transfers across the set.

If it's rhythm as well as harmony, maybe just design your own ? There are lots of examples of graphic scores available that you could use for inspiration.. Can you read basic rhythms ?
In July? Of course they did! I didn't say we saw him having his breakfast, I think he'd been out to get a paper. Anyway it's not on the Travelodge breakfast menu.
It's the only song of there's I know 😁 they were playing sleigh ride in the snow for some bizarre reason yesterday on classic FM.

Did they play the Christmas song ?
Hi all, I'm looking to purchase a lightweight (10 KG at most!) combo amp to use primarily at jazz gigs with my upright or electric bass. Needs to be light enough so I can carry it easily while wheeling a double bass! I know a few guys who have the Markbass Micromark 801, but if I wonder if there were any similar things I should consider? Thanks, H
Phil Jones Double Four. It's tiny, but perfectly capable. I use it for my solo stuff, but also in a 5 piece jazz band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqMaOHJ9okE
Source Audio Soundblox2 OFD & Multiwave Bass Distortion with their expression pedal can do it. With two presets you could programme either two different types of distortion that can fade in or out depending on how you select the exp option, Or if you just find one killer sound, set the exp option to fade in (more gain) on toe down on left button & the opposite on right button ... quite a few options really as you can select the exp assign to any parameter, use as volume pedal or set to clean blend or maybe low to high eq (treble or mid or bass) etc .... You can also use 2nd out on exp pedal to send signal to any pedal that has 1/4" trs exp input and still send to SA pedals (they link via 1/8" trrs cable) .. very versatile
Thank you ! 😊

A pedal, where you can reduce the amount of gain to sort of fade in or out the distortion effect. Anyone know of anything please ?
If you are using nonstandard pitch does this mean the whole band has to also use this tuning? I'm very intrigued as to why people want to do this though.
It'd just for my solo bass stuff. I have to remember to reset my tuner when I'm with a band though, so I'm gonna use my old intellitouch pt10 for my stuff, and I'll keep the poly tune for the bands.
I couldn't tell you off the top of my head; the actual values have gone from my mind as rather than re-calibrate my tuner I've figured out which 'out of tune' position to aim each string for. I will run the maths and post about it at a later time if you're interested. I think the theory and mathematics behind the idea are very interesting and tuning each string this way to a different calibration does create a distinctly different feeling tonality.
Please yes, when you have time. 😊
Fair enough. I do think that it's a cool idea and I also tune my 'solo performance' instrument to the exact values for each pitch to achieve what '432' proposes to, because I like the appeal of this area of speculation in overtone based music.
I saw your post the other day regarding overtones. Very interesting. So how do you tune your bass ?
-
If there even is anything to that theory, tuning to 432 in equal temperament would be pointless anyway. Overtones of the arbitrary pitch values used in modern temperament wouldn't hit the naturally occurring mathematical values which tuning to that number is supposed to achieve. You'd have to tune each string to a different pitch (for example F# at 428.6) to have the desired effect, which would then put your equally tempered frets 'out of tune'
It's what I like to do
-
How low do you want to go? And why, if you don't mind me asking?
I like to tune to A at 432 Hz.
-
Nope, you can change the reference pitch in 1Hz increments. Thats what it says in the manual, and I just tried it, and it does.
Yep, but only up or down by a maximum of 5 Hz. The lowest it'll go is 435 Hz.
-
That's really good. Garageband is amazing you know, especially when you consider that it's free.
Just bought one from PMT in Romford.....hope they work as most clip ons aren't that good.
I sometimes see things backwards, I just though i saw Epiphone Woody Allen signature bass, in your sig

It's extremely fast and accurate. However it seems that I can't use my favoured reference pitch, so I'm a little disappointed. You can only change the reference pitch by +/- 5 Hz.

Michael Manring uses the Boss GT3. It's quite old now, but the sounds he gets from his are nothing short of amazing.

Are separate pedals really better sounding ? I just switched to a multi effects after using separates, and I think it's much better.

This is a little over 2 years old, and has been used 3 or so days a week carrying my bass from Birmingham to London and back. It's in good overall condition, there's certainly a lot of life left in it. There are no holes or tears anywhere, the straps are fine, the pocket is fine, and the inside is fine. The only slight issue with it is the piping that runs around the side of the bag has split in places. This is just cosmetic, and started to happen over a year ago. The price includes postage.
