1.
so we're wasting our money by buying say an MIA precision over a Squire affinity or there's no difference in sound between a precision and a Jazz or a Stingray? or have I misunderstood your post? edit, btw we're going way off topic here
What he's trying to say (I think), is that if you play a song using a Stingray, then swap and play the same song on a Jazz. You'll sound like you, playing either a Jazz or a Stingray. Either way, you'll sound like you. There's a lot more to getting someone's sound, than just going out and buying the same gear. You need to look at how they played, and what. You can (and lots of guys have), go out and buy exactly the same gear as someone you like, and still not sound anything like the person you were trying to emulate. See my earlier post where I stay that 2 guys can play exactly the same bass, and sound completely different. Try it next time at a gig or rehearsal, give your bass to another play, and have them play something on it. If I wanted to emulate someones sound, then I'd sit down and maybe watch them play on Youtube, see where they play, and how hard they attack, finger style or pick etc. Then use what I've got to try and get close. I've just actually taken on a new student, he's really into The Stranglers, so I need to check out some of Burnell's playing over the weekend, so I've got something to work on with him.
2.
Funnily enough, I got an LM III and a Bergantino HD112 the other day. Set it up, plugged in my JV maple neck Precision and hey presto - instant JJ sound! Everything was set flat too... Well, thats not a bad thing! I seem to remember something about him using Marshall and then later Trace..
And I bet he still sounded like J. J Burnell.
3.
Thanks everyone for your helpful and encouraging replies. HOWEVER, BLUE as seems to be the norm in your posts, thanks for your condescending and arrogant reply I said In my original post that I realised I was not JJ Brunel, all I wanted was some pointers on how he achieved the tone, what equipment used etc I have since watched loads of stuff on you tube etc. But the answer from you was one of conceit at someone who is clearly beneath your lofty heights in both ability and knowledge/talent! I really think you should "check the attitude" there rant over and breathe
I gotta say, having read Blue's post, it doesn't really strike me as being particularly arrogant or condescending. He has got a point too, player do tend to sound pretty much the same regardless of what the instrument is they're using. That's maybe why guys like players, it's their playing that they like, not the bass, amp or strings. Two players can play exactly the same bass, through exactly the same amp, with exactly the same settings, and sound different.
4. I offered £1.50 but it was declined. Why is the buy it now £9 million ?
5. Isn't this kind of like saying kids in the 70s had it easy because they had cassettes? It was easier in the 80/90 because of CDs ? It's just media, you still need to listen to check it's right.
6. The nice thing about the MarkBass is it's got 2 tone controls, so you can really tailor the sound.
7. I use the MarkBass mini distortion pedal, it's micro pedal. I use it primarily as a preamp, but it does a great job as a distortion. Check out this video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU55QT2TXVU
8. That's what amps are for, to make you louder and to be heard. If you're already 'digging in', how can you term....dig in ? Seriously though, watch any great finger style player, they make it look easy because they're not really working hard, they can dig in when they need to/want to for an accent.
9. It may be perfect then, I have my pedals sat on a small table so's I can adjust the settings on the fly. I sit down to play, not very rock n roll I guess
10. Use Facebook to make contact with bands from London, who play similar music, use them to play support gigs and maybe build a fan base there, otherwise it's a waste of time. Why is it a waste of time ? Because no-one knows you there, so unless you expect your fans from wherever you live to travel with you, which is maybe a bit pointless, then you'll have no-one watching you. Find some venues that have bands like yours playing there. Find out what bands are playing, make contact with them.
11. I'd put the tuner first yes. It kills the sound going out of it. You'd need to switch off all the other pedals first before using it else. I'd have the preamp pedal next in-line. That's how I have mine anyway, I use the MarkBass mini distortion as a preamp. So have you bought them specifically for this band, have they told you what effects to buy ? Seems strange you'd buy something without really knowing what it does. The octave will make your note sound an octave above or below the one you play, depends how you set it. You can usually blend in the original note too. You should experiment, and just play around with what you've got. It will make a big difference how you order them. Delayed reverb sounds different to reverbed delay for instance.
12. That looks brilliant. I was scouring their website the other day, actually looking for a metal shelf or something to convert. That looks great though, it's designed for a laptop, so I imagine it'd be pretty durable. You'd just need a back to carry it in.
13. Check out Facebook groups, there a few that have jobs on cruise ships, you could also try Star now, both get bands advertising for musicians, they've usually already got jobs lined up.
14.
Goes without saying to check out any contract before you sign it. Are you in the MU?
That's a brilliant idea. The MU will check over any contract that you're offered.
15. That is an extremely ugly, very expensive instrument, made by someone I've never heard of. I don't like the Who, and I've always thought Entwistle to be a bit over-rated. Consequently, I won't be bidding
16.
One from the bookshelf. There is a price list in the back for amps and you could have bought a Trace 1008 8 x 10 combo (!) for £974.
Wow, I was 5 I inherited a load of magazines from my uncle. They all date from the 1980's they're in the loft in boxes, I can't remember what they are now, but they used to make interesting reading when I was growing up.
17. Can't really go wrong with chord tones. If you look at them as scales rather than chords, there are lots of common notes, identify them for a start. D minor - D, E, F, G, A, Bb, C, D C minor - C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C G minor - G, A, Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G Just record the 3 chords, and practice soloing over them, play safe to start, then start experimenting. If you come across something that sounds cool, look see what it is, and remember it.
18. Do you read well ? That's an absolute must. I did a cruise for 6 weeks a few years ago. The band had 4 pads, the singer just called out which colour book and the song number, then you were off playing. You also need to be able to cover different styles. I was paying normal function stuff one night, then cocktail jazz stuff the next.
19.
I've been listening to Apollo in bed this past few months (falling asleep to it). Gonna give that album a turn.
I was listening to that this morning on the train.
20. The beginning of ambient music - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG03l_fMI70 Eno was in bed recovering from a motor accident. A friend had given him an album of harp music as a gift which he struggled out of bed to play. He got back into bed to listen to the record, only to find that the volume on the record player was turned right down. Lacking the energy to get back out of bed, he was forced to lie there and listen to the barely audible music. This was a revelation to him, a new way of hearing music - as part of the ambience of the environment.
