1. The nice thing about the MarkBass is it's got 2 tone controls, so you can really tailor the sound.
2. I use the MarkBass mini distortion pedal, it's micro pedal. I use it primarily as a preamp, but it does a great job as a distortion. Check out this video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tU55QT2TXVU
3. That's what amps are for, to make you louder and to be heard. If you're already 'digging in', how can you term....dig in ? Seriously though, watch any great finger style player, they make it look easy because they're not really working hard, they can dig in when they need to/want to for an accent.
4. It may be perfect then, I have my pedals sat on a small table so's I can adjust the settings on the fly. I sit down to play, not very rock n roll I guess
5. Use Facebook to make contact with bands from London, who play similar music, use them to play support gigs and maybe build a fan base there, otherwise it's a waste of time. Why is it a waste of time ? Because no-one knows you there, so unless you expect your fans from wherever you live to travel with you, which is maybe a bit pointless, then you'll have no-one watching you. Find some venues that have bands like yours playing there. Find out what bands are playing, make contact with them.
6. I'd put the tuner first yes. It kills the sound going out of it. You'd need to switch off all the other pedals first before using it else. I'd have the preamp pedal next in-line. That's how I have mine anyway, I use the MarkBass mini distortion as a preamp. So have you bought them specifically for this band, have they told you what effects to buy ? Seems strange you'd buy something without really knowing what it does. The octave will make your note sound an octave above or below the one you play, depends how you set it. You can usually blend in the original note too. You should experiment, and just play around with what you've got. It will make a big difference how you order them. Delayed reverb sounds different to reverbed delay for instance.
7. That looks brilliant. I was scouring their website the other day, actually looking for a metal shelf or something to convert. That looks great though, it's designed for a laptop, so I imagine it'd be pretty durable. You'd just need a back to carry it in.
8. Check out Facebook groups, there a few that have jobs on cruise ships, you could also try Star now, both get bands advertising for musicians, they've usually already got jobs lined up.
9.
Goes without saying to check out any contract before you sign it. Are you in the MU?
That's a brilliant idea. The MU will check over any contract that you're offered.
10. That is an extremely ugly, very expensive instrument, made by someone I've never heard of. I don't like the Who, and I've always thought Entwistle to be a bit over-rated. Consequently, I won't be bidding
11. Strymon El Capistan, amazing pedal
12.
One from the bookshelf. There is a price list in the back for amps and you could have bought a Trace 1008 8 x 10 combo (!) for £974.
Wow, I was 5 I inherited a load of magazines from my uncle. They all date from the 1980's they're in the loft in boxes, I can't remember what they are now, but they used to make interesting reading when I was growing up.
13. Can't really go wrong with chord tones. If you look at them as scales rather than chords, there are lots of common notes, identify them for a start. D minor - D, E, F, G, A, Bb, C, D C minor - C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C G minor - G, A, Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G Just record the 3 chords, and practice soloing over them, play safe to start, then start experimenting. If you come across something that sounds cool, look see what it is, and remember it.
14. Yeah sure 😊
15. Do you read well ? That's an absolute must. I did a cruise for 6 weeks a few years ago. The band had 4 pads, the singer just called out which colour book and the song number, then you were off playing. You also need to be able to cover different styles. I was paying normal function stuff one night, then cocktail jazz stuff the next.
16.
I've been listening to Apollo in bed this past few months (falling asleep to it). Gonna give that album a turn.
I was listening to that this morning on the train.
17. The beginning of ambient music - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG03l_fMI70 Eno was in bed recovering from a motor accident. A friend had given him an album of harp music as a gift which he struggled out of bed to play. He got back into bed to listen to the record, only to find that the volume on the record player was turned right down. Lacking the energy to get back out of bed, he was forced to lie there and listen to the barely audible music. This was a revelation to him, a new way of hearing music - as part of the ambience of the environment.
18. I want to get rid of my rather thick and inflexible Planet Waves cables. Something like this would be great - Are these any good ? http://www.effectpowersupplies.com/diago-pf01-patch-factory-solderless-patch-cable-system-4223-p.asp Are they easy for someone with the DIY skills of a frog to put together ?
19. Any recommendations ? I just bought an MXR bass fuzz deluxe, but it's a bit too much for my needs. I want a nice subtle breakup/distortion sound.
20. ambient

SOld

I bought this from on here last week. It's a great pedal, in perfect condition. It's not quite what I was after though, I want something a little more subtle. Comes with all original packaging etc. Here's a link to the original sale thread. http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry2677475 £70 which is what I paid for it.
21.
This is clearly not live, and I don't know if it's been messed about with after recording either but I think she's got a hell of a voice. The last minute and a half of this song especially: https://www.youtube....1&v=jU9xIDVHpUw
What ? You seriously think that's good ? Edit cos I had another listen, and wish I hadn't. When she goes high, it's very, very brief and clipped. Frankly she's awful.
22. He's one of the few famous musicians I've met, he was a very kind, patient down to earth guy. He most certainly didn't have an ego problem. I've met far more nobody's with bigger egos. I'm personally all for musiand pushing and wanting to experiment.
