1.
To light a fire, or keep a fire burning, you need 3 things....fuel, heat and oxygen. take one or more away and.....no fire. To make a bass sound good, you need four things. A decent finger or plectrum technique, a bass that suits the style of music you are playing, a reasonable quality amp, and some decent speakers. This is ' the chain' in the order that it happens, and one must drive and support the one that follows it. Many folks think by having one or two of these four requirements they will get the sound they want, and many folks are disappointed that they fall short of this elusive sound. I spent 25 years buying the best gear I could afford at the time, but never really got there, as I was buying for example ' the amp ' without considering how it would sound with the rest of the gear In the overall mix of ' the four .' Buying without thinking things through, can often result in a bass player ending up with a fantastic rig (as individual component parts,) yet it sounds crap as they are not matched to each other. I would always suggest , start at the beginning by asking a few simple questions... Do I use or prefer finger or plectrum.....this has a huge effect on the sound you will create..... Is the bass I am using capable of creating the sound I want....? Not all basses can create that funky sound, and not all are good at bone crunching low end. Amp and cabs are more of a personal choice, but some amps will start to distort and grind at lower pre amp levels, so if mid to highs are what you want, Orange gear might not be the right choice, whereas TC or Markbass might do the trick. The last thing in the chain is the cab. A 15" speaker will rearrange you intestine, whereas 8 or 10 " speakers will take the top off a boiled egg at 100yds. 15s are fantastic at low to mids, and if you stick in a horn they sound brilliant, but they just can't 'snap' back as quick as an 8 or 10 can...... I am not being a know all, or a smart arse.....far from it, as I would not have taken 25 years and spent £1000's on gear I probably didn't need.. All I am trying to say is think thru, and ask advice before you flush your hard earned cash unnecessarily round the 'S' bend...
I once saw Anthony Jackson doing a masterclass at my uni. He was playing his Fodera through a clapped out Ashdown rig and sounded awesome. In my experience it has nothing at all to do with the gear, it's all the player. Guys on here spend a fortune every year buying stuff, and then moving it on because it doesn't make them sound any better.
2. Another one added https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXLYPNl48tn6G47pEXEQ5Jg/videos?spfreload=10 I have some longer ones too that I'm working on, I'm getting the hang of editing on iMovie
3. I'm kind of interested in something like this - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BMQ7R8E/ref=s9_simh_gw_p267_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0MX5N9D25MEY8V0KCMTM&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455344027&pf_rd_i=468294 Or maybe the George L's. At the moment I'm just using some ready made Planetwaves things. Problem is they're not really the right length, and they're all angled jacks, and I want some angled and some straight. Are these things easy to assemble without soldering (I'm pretty dangerous with a soldering iron ) Can you use angled and straight jacks ?
4. Anyone use these and know of a decent carry case ? I bought one from amazon but it was quite frankly rubbish. It needs to be light but strong. 😊

I just sold my Tonereaper pedal to Paul, a very quick and easy transaction.
6.
Anyone who has emailed Thomann about problems with an order already delivered - how long before they have replied? Looks like they have only one email contact address and no direct access to the person designated as 'your contact person'.
Same day, maybe next day. There's a long list of email address on the website.
7. All my recordings feature loads of it, I use an eBow a lot, it's useful to keep that level even.
8.
Good to see that there's still a lot of appreciation for soundtracks that are specifically scored to fit to the film and not simply a collection of someone's favourite songs shoe-horned around the dialogue. I have to admit though I own a lot of soundtrack CDs for some very awful films that have been bought simply because they contained a track by an artist I liked that wasn't available anywhere else.
Good point, I think a lot of suggestions so far have been films with songs in them, rather than actual real soundtracks. The blues brothers for instance.
9. They have longer off New Years holiday, January 6th is a holiday too.
10. I can only praise Thomann. I bought a pair of Genelec monitors from them in November, one went wrong at the weekend, so I emailed them Sunday, Monday I had a reply and a return shipping label, I sent it back Monday afternoon, yesterday I had an email confirming receipt and saying that they were fixing it. Do many UK stores offer a 3 year warranty on top of the manufacturers ?
11.
I regularly listen to the Bladerunner soundtrack. It's very atmospheric. Oh and don't forget The soundtrack to 'Superfly' by Curtis Mayfield. A work of funky genius.
Oooh, while I'm not into Curtis Mayfield at all, I do really like the Bladerunner soundtrack, it's one of my favourite films too. That looks veeeeerrry cool on crimson vinyl
12. I like the scores that Clint Mansell has done with the Kronos Quartet, particularly The Fountain. Jonny Greenwood's There Will be Blood is good too.
13. Maybe have 2 smaller boards, configured so you can just connect them together ?

15. Thanks 😊
16. Try this, it's something I tell my students to imagine. Set your metronome to a reasonable tempo, 60 BPM or somewhere like that. Listen carefully to it clicking, and visualise a ball bouncing in time to the click. It's hitting the floor on the click, at the top of its bounce is the off beat. Concentrate on this, and really get it into your mind. Tap your foot along to it, clap along to it. Pick uo your bass. Practice playing quarter notes along to the click, getting your notes on the click. Practice playing eighth notes, again get your first note on the click, the second is at the pinnacle of the ball's bounce. Sixteenth notes you add another half way up the bounce, and half way down. Get a good teacher too.
17. Good dude, nice arrangements and production. When track 2 started I thought yes , I really like this track, quite Porcupine tree'ish, a really nice vibe.
18. Audio Technica athm50. Or save up a bit more and get a pair of Sennheiser HD650's, I just bought a pair of these, and they're extremely detailed, far more so than cheaper ones. You're gonna use them for listening to fine detail, so what's the point in buying them if you can't actually hear that detail ? Seriously, the difference between 'budget' headphones and more expensive ones is like night and day, look on it as an investment. Avoid things like Grado, they're made for listening to music, not mixing or producing it. Have a look on the Sound on sound website, there are recommendations on there.
19. Anyone use them ? I'm looking for a reasonably compact, but decent quality pedal board/bag. My effects are as follows - Dunlop volume pedal, Neunaber Wet, Strymon El Capistan, MarkBass Mini Distortion, Diago Micro power supply, and I plan to get a chorus pedal, compressor and I want an Akai Headrush E1. How big are they, and how durable ? They're not a bad price - http://www.diago.co....pedalboard.html
20.
The License, it wouldn't be legal. There is no point trying a technical means to stop a legal issue. But there is also nothing to stop you using it on your friends macbook as long as you aren't using it on yours at the same time. It is licensed to you, not your machine.
But how would they know we were both using it at the same time ? I'm not planning to do this, but I don't see how you can't, if like has been said, you can just log-in to the app store and re-download it. I'm just puzzled as to how it works.
21.
I bought something last Sunday, 4th Jan and received order confirmation on the 5th. It was shipped on the 7th and has been sitting in UK Customs since waiting Customs clearance since the 8th. Perhaps it will pitch up sometime next week if I'm lucky.
Same as mine, seems a bit odd, stuff from Europe getting stuck in customs ?
22. I like the AK47 shaped one, I shouldn't imagine that'd get through customs and excise without being opened.
23. I don't know, what's to prevent you from logging onto the app store from a friends macbook and download it to that too ?
