1. Most people would be doing several different things, including teaching, writing, journalism, producing etc. Steve Lawson is most definitely professional, but has a huge amount of income making sources in his portfolio.
2.
Thanks guys. The strings I use (Rotosound Trubass) have a steel core. Would that work? Ambient - amazing that you replied, as I just bought your album on Bandcamp! It's great....
Wow, thanks for buying it - seriously ! With a steel core then I'm guessing yes, maybe just a bit slow ? I'm home from uni at the weekend, Sutton Coldfield, you're welcome to call over and try mine before buying one if you wanted.
3.
Must be my ham fisted technique Are you playing the note initially to get it vibrating or just from the Ebow?
No, it just starts to ring due to the eBow, maybe takes half a second or so sometimes on the low strings, but that's not a problem with the sort of stuff I do. A lot of people have problems using them on bass, it's totally just a matter of persevering with the thing, and getting the angle right and stuff.
4. It's just practice, I can get it to work on any string really. I find I can get some amazing woodwind type sounds using it on the A string around the 3rd fret onwards. Low E for a nice drone sound.
5.
Two EBow questions: 1. Will EBow work with nylon flatwound strings? 2. Is EBow Plus worth the extra? Cheers!
No, and no. It works by electro magnetism, the strings have to be metal. I just use a normal eBow, check any of my recordings for what it's capable of. It's an amazing device, I've had mine for about 4 years now.
6. Now also also available on CD Baby, Amazon and iTunes.
7. Just buy a 'real book', and a selection of jazz albums, then start transcribing. Find some like minded fellow musicians too, that are maybe just starting out, and start jamming with them.

Bump for a price drop.
9. A friend of mine is a classical trombone player, he's able to read both fluently. I too find it awkward switching between the 2, but I don't often have to read treble clef, which is why I have the problem.
10. Yaaaawwwnnn ! Can't believe this rather pointless discussion is still going on. If people think it's ok, and want to, then let them. Those of you who object to them, then don't use them, or go and those who do use them.
11. For software you should already have GarageBand. I did loads with an older version of that a few years ago. Now I use Logic Pro X, which is really great and available for £140 from the App Store.
12.
Get him to stay in the van.
Or the car park maybe ?
13. Funny, but my mom was just talking about Cilla Black, there was a trailer on TV for a programme about her. She's almost completely deaf, thanks to music being too loud.
14. I'd refuse to play with him, personally. There have been bands in the past that I've played with that I've refused to rehearse with and ended up leaving with because of the frankly stupid volume levels. Once your hearing is gone, it's gone and won't come back.
15.
that's the uni, http://www.lcm.ac.uk - thats the music college. and I ask as a good friend of mine is a course leader on Leeds Beckett's equivalent course
Thanks
16. Motown stuff is deceptively hard. The rhythms are tricking, and Jamerson was coming from a jazz background, so there's often a lot of chromaticism in his lines that can be awkward to play. Best is to break tricky bits down to a bar or even a beat at a time.
17. First you need to identify what it is that you're having the problem with. That may sound daft, but usually once you do that, then you can correct it. If it's rhythmic then it's sometimes best to break things down into individual beats, and work on each little bit.
18.
Leeds Music College, Leeds Beckett University or University of Leeds?
Music - http://music.leeds.ac.uk/pg/taught-postgraduate-2/mmus-critical-and-experimental-composition/
19.
No experience at all but I wish you all the very best - heard some exceptional playing of yours on the recording threads!
Thanks man, seriously
20. I'm applying for masters degree courses in either music technology or electro-acoustic music composition. So far I'm I'm applying/going to apply to the following - Birmingham Manchester Leeds West London I was wondering if anyone had any experience of these institutions/courses or could recommend others ?
21. For that budget I'd get a MOTU Utralite mk3. I just bought an Apogee Jam that I carry about so's I can record out, really nice too. At home I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2.
