1. Also check which way you have the little switch set, with the eBow point along the fretboard, the little switch ideally should be switched upwards towards you. Switched downwards toward the door it does weirdness, I sometimes use that setting for very high pitched sounds.
2. I use one a lot, listen to my bandcamp and soundcloud pages. It'll work on any string, not just the high ones, and any gauge, I use 125 to 30 flat wounds. It's all down to practice. Make sure the eBow isn't touching the string at all, if you're not getting it to work it could just be that. Just stick with it and you'll soon be making some very cool and unbass like sounds 🎅.
3.
I prefer 4 string basses, a bass player doesn't need more strings.
All depends on what you want to do I guess, for me I'd be extremely lost without either a low B and most definitely without my high C string. 🎅
4. He has a program on Classic FM Saturday nights.
5. Kind of like Birmingham's German Christmas market, I can't work out why people can't just go and enjoy it without having to get drunk, then wonder about New street station causing havoc ? Twice this last week has been a nightmare when I've gotten back from London late.
6. It all depends on the context that you're using it in. For my stuff I use delay and reverb all the time, but in a band I'd probably never use it.
7.
I've wanted a stereo reel to reel for a long time. I just love the look of them. You could gig with one too Ambient - great prop ion stage!! Or perhaps something like this ( watch to the end) :
That's brilliant, thanks for posting the link A stereo one would do me, that's probably what I'm going to get.
8.
I bought an e bow and couldn't get much out of a bass at all. It works fine on my guitars but sh*t on the bass!
Stick with it, it's just a question of practice with it.
9.
If you're looking for a bit of tape colouration within a mostly digital setup, I've known people who track to digital then bounce tracks to tape almost as an effect. The advantage is that you can get away with a two or four track tape machine (so you can afford a better machine for the price) and still have the flexibility of tracking digitally.
Great idea, a bit like I was thinking of recording one track at a time, then bouncing to digital.
10.
How fantastically retro of you! They take a bit of TLC by comparison with digital gear, but if you find a well maintained one, you'll have great fun with it. http://www.soundonso...orderadvice.htm
Thanks for that link, some interesting reading there
11. There are guys I know who do ambient music that release music on cassette tape .
12.
No it's a great idea. Those lovely ampex reels spinning around in the corner.. I have no idea about buying these but will follow your quest.
They're not that expensive on eBay, I guess I don't actually need a multitrack either, mono would probably do, just record 1 track at a time onto it.
13. I know what you mean about plug ins, but I want to be able to slow the tape down, and do loops and stuff, and record those into Logic.
14. I really want one Anyone know anything about them ? I plan to record onto it, then put that into Logic Pro. Possibly maybe a strange idea
15. Most people would be doing several different things, including teaching, writing, journalism, producing etc. Steve Lawson is most definitely professional, but has a huge amount of income making sources in his portfolio.
16.
Thanks guys. The strings I use (Rotosound Trubass) have a steel core. Would that work? Ambient - amazing that you replied, as I just bought your album on Bandcamp! It's great....
Wow, thanks for buying it - seriously ! With a steel core then I'm guessing yes, maybe just a bit slow ? I'm home from uni at the weekend, Sutton Coldfield, you're welcome to call over and try mine before buying one if you wanted.
17.
Must be my ham fisted technique Are you playing the note initially to get it vibrating or just from the Ebow?
No, it just starts to ring due to the eBow, maybe takes half a second or so sometimes on the low strings, but that's not a problem with the sort of stuff I do. A lot of people have problems using them on bass, it's totally just a matter of persevering with the thing, and getting the angle right and stuff.
18. It's just practice, I can get it to work on any string really. I find I can get some amazing woodwind type sounds using it on the A string around the 3rd fret onwards. Low E for a nice drone sound.
19.
Two EBow questions: 1. Will EBow work with nylon flatwound strings? 2. Is EBow Plus worth the extra? Cheers!
No, and no. It works by electro magnetism, the strings have to be metal. I just use a normal eBow, check any of my recordings for what it's capable of. It's an amazing device, I've had mine for about 4 years now.
20. Now also also available on CD Baby, Amazon and iTunes.
21. Just buy a 'real book', and a selection of jazz albums, then start transcribing. Find some like minded fellow musicians too, that are maybe just starting out, and start jamming with them.
22. ambient

SOld

Bump for a price drop.
23. A friend of mine is a classical trombone player, he's able to read both fluently. I too find it awkward switching between the 2, but I don't often have to read treble clef, which is why I have the problem.
24. Yaaaawwwnnn ! Can't believe this rather pointless discussion is still going on. If people think it's ok, and want to, then let them. Those of you who object to them, then don't use them, or go and those who do use them.
25. For software you should already have GarageBand. I did loads with an older version of that a few years ago. Now I use Logic Pro X, which is really great and available for £140 from the App Store.
