This coffee analogy doesn't work though, if star bucks are comparable with a band like kings of Leon then your little coffee brand is no more than a cart in the street so no matter how Nice your coffee is unless you can get a few people to taste it those £3s are going to keep heading to star bucks. As musicians we make out that we are the only ones having to do this,I can't think of a business that hadn't had to sell them selves short initially to get a foot on the door.
It's not just my music, or the OP's music that people expect for nothing, it's music in general. The huge problem is that big name bands give theirs away. U2 for instance, and Radiohead with their pay what you want. They can afford to give their music away, it doesn't really matter to them, because they're not really giving it away free. Radiohead made more from in rainbows than their previous album, and U2 got a fortune from iTunes. The public however, perceive that it's for nothing. It's also not a question of getting a foot in the door, the precedent is set so that it's just for nothing, whether you're an established band, or total newcomers.
  2. I use cd baby too - iTunes and amazon both require UPC codes, you can get them off cd baby for $10.

  4.
I'm sure Foderas feel absolutely fantastic, but the designs have always left me completely cold! The Monarch for example, just looks very pedestrian to me and not at all striking. Just feels like the proportions are just slightly out, somehow...Never got on with the sound either. Too much modern-sounding (Warwick-esque, I guess!) growl, and never heard an example on one capable of a warm, more vintage tone. All personal opinion of course! But I mean, seriously, this monstrosity for 7K!?...That body looks like Snoopy with his mouth open!
I'd rather have that than some of the other really very ugly single cut basses, there are a couple of UK builders that seem to have thought to themselves, lets do a single cut design with a difference, lets make sooooooo ugly !
  5.
What'd be the point of that? People can just rip the CD.
I mean for bonus material I have tracks on my Bandcamp that aren't on albums.
  6. If you're selling a CD, then maybe give a code for a free download ?
  7. Charge something at least, let them pay more if they want to. i've had a hundred or so download my music, most paid, but when I counted there were 20 odd who hadn't. it got really annoying when people downloaded it for nothing. Why should we give music away for free ? It really annoys me this culture that's grown up about wanting music for nothing, we're partly to blame for giving it away for free in the first place. People will pay £3 for a cup of coffee or a supermarket sandwich, but object to buying music ?
  8. No, they may be more stable, if the neck joins the body at the 12th fret. They sound the same to me anyway as any other bass. Some aren't true single cuts either, especially the bolt on neck ones. Some look very cool, especially the Fodera's, others look plain ugly, especially some of the newer makers who've jumped on the bandwagon.
That fingerboard is magnificent, I do love the woods they use for Zon fingerboards. Great ambience.

What a lovely looking bass... I was very tempted by this when it was up a couple of months back.
It's a fantastic bass, I was recording with it yesterday afternoon. It's just so easy to play. I need a fretless though, and as I explained, I couldn't in the end, go ahead with the de-fret of this, which was the whole point in buying it in the first place. I really love carbon fibre necks, the stability of them, and resonance and inherent sound is perfect for what I do.
  10. I had one of these, a truly amazing bass.

    Some more photos.
  12. I've been playing for over 20 years, I'm currently in the final year of a BMus music degree course. As part of my final year I'm also studying for a level 6 licentiate diploma (LRSL) in music teaching qualification through Rockschool. My lessons are based around the students personal needs and requirements. I can teach sight-reading, aural and transcribing skills, general music theory and harmony, and all styles and techniques. I specialise in 5 and 6 string playing.
  13.
Coffee table customs do nothing for me so I would rather spend £2.5k on a Modulus, I presume as others have in the past I would not be the only one?
They have fancy wood facings, it's just that they do it practicality in mind. Mine has a beautiful quilted maple front that's almost 3D like. Then there was that amazing looking semi hollow that was for sale back in the summer. Too many builders now by a machine to sculpt the bodies (don't know what it's called CNC maybe ?), and have the most hideous body shape, usually based around a single cut design. Whereas the Modulus Quantum shape is so sleek and elegant.
  14. I've never, ever played one. I would like to play one, but I really don't see how they could be better, or do something for me, that either of the 2 basses that I currently own don't do. I'm currently selling a fantastic Zon Sonus 6 string bass. In terms of build, playability and sound, it's quite simply amazing, I just prefer my Modulus, and need a fretless. It all I guess, comes down to whether you can afford the cost of a Fodera, and need one, will it do something for your playing/music, that your current bass, or any other bass won't ? After all, that's why you own a bass isn't it ? For the music that you play. If you're into slap, then you buy a bass that's suited to that style of music, and has the sound that you want. That may be a Jazz bass of some sort, for the 'Marcus' sound, if that's what you want. If you play soul or blues, then maybe a P bass would be appropriate. Most of the guys with Fodera's seem to be the modern jazz type of player, Matt Garrison, Janek, Anthony Jackson, Michael Pope etc. There's an amazing Spanish luthier who builds some amazing, and very Fodera like basses - http://www.jcrluthier.com/album2.html

I've not had this too long. I was really after a fretless Modulus Quantum 6 string, which are pretty rare. My idea was to buy this and get it de-fretted, I didn't do that, simply because it's too nice a bass. Anyway. I already have a fretted 6 string that I love (really), my Modulus Quantum. I need a 6 string fretless, this time I'm going to wait and get a Modulus. So, here is my Zon Sonus custom 6 string bass for sale. It features an ash body, with spalted maple facing. A 24 fret carbon fibre neck, with an incredibly low action. This has a very highly figured phenowood fretboard, this had been mistaken for an ebony fretboard. Twin Bartolini pickups, and Zon's own 3 band active preamp, with volume and pickup blend. The string spacing is a very comfortable 16.5mm, and the scale length is 34". It has a very distinctive yet versatile sound. It's far more 'alive' sounding than my Modulus. The Modulus is incredible, but you have to coax the sounds out of it, they're just there with this bass, This track here was recorded with my Zon, everything is the Zon in fact, no keyboards or samples etc. The melody bit just has a bit of chorus and some reverb on it, excuse the playing. The pads are again the Zon, but played with an eBow. https://an-ending-as...-a-lonely-place Here's a photo of it. Condition is pretty much perfect, there are no links or dents, scratches or there blemishes that I can find. It comes with a Zon gig bag. My only trade would be a Modulus Quantum 6 string fretless bass. The bass is in Birmingham, but can be bought to London quite easily.
  16.
I don't see them making a come back in full, as I'm sure the filings for bankruptcy will have a catch or two. Also at 2.5k upwards still a very niche item, you can spend the same and choose a 5 piece body wood with loads of carves and bells and whistles. You could part up a similar bass for a lot less than the price they are asking.
Hmm, there's the build quality though, my Modulus is amazingly built, better than anything else I've played.
  17. Well looking at the photos, there's definitely a Quantum model, so I'm happy, not that I'll be able to afford one .
  18. Brilliant news if they are, my Modulus is a simply amazing bass ! https://www.facebook.com/modulusguitars?fref=photo
  19. I have a zon sonus 6 that I may be parting with, it'd only cost half your budget. 😊
  20.
Very interesting thread. I have a skewed perspective on it though as I've stopped buying downloads if I can get the music in a physical format. Often I'd use bandcamp (or other) to listen to the tracks and then buy the CD or record or tape etc etc. When the music is only avaiIable as a download I actually prefer it to have a stated price. I don't see a problem with offering tracks on bandcamp for a fee and then having a few of the same tracks as a free download from your website or soundcloud or whatever. When uploading tracks as an Ep or Album to Bandcamp can you designate that one track is a free download, but the rest have to be purchased?
Yes, you can set it so that there's a fee for the album, some tracks can be free others need to be paid for.
  21.
Okay, here you go. Several people have asked me about this. There are several venues that feature free improv/experimental music. I would recommend you go and see a gig first rather than send links to the promoters concerned. Talk to whoever runs them in person. In addition to Cafe Oto and the Vortex.... The Dog House in Kennington - Vimeo have several vids from this venue - so maybe start there. Very Free-improv (two venues) Club Integral - several venues, so look them up - avant bands mostly and small ensembles Lewisham Arthouse - Charles Hayward, the drummer, runs this. Invite only - so go to a gig first The Hundred Years Gallery - Kingsland rd, a small basement space - small ensembles Ryans Bar in Stoke Newington - I've seen small avant bands play there in the basement The birds Nest in Deptford - loud, rough venue suitable for small bands The Montague Arms, New Cross - run by a collective - stage/PA/ bands Servant Jazz Quarters - Dalston - cosy basement venue often used by Club integral The Mopomoso club - free improv - two different venues Boat-Ting - a nice venue on a boat moored on the north bank. Monthly improv gigs
That's a great list 😊 I was gonna maybe suggest contacting steve lawson or something, it's the kind of thing he's been doing for years.
  22. I guess I also maybe naively thought that people would pay for it, if they liked it, as I would myself. The thing with Bandcamp is that you can just listen to an artists music, as many times as you want. It's not like Amazon or iTunes where you can preview a track, and you maybe get 30 or 40 seconds. You can be pretty sure that you like it, before you buy it. There are albums that I've downloaded where I've had to listen via Bandcamp, simply because I didn't have the £5 spare to be able to download them, even though they were available for free if I'd chosen. Maybe I have too much respect for people and their music ?
  23.
I personally view recorded music as a portfolio. The more people that have a copy of it the better it is for us as artists since it will be more likely that more will come and see us live. Painters and photographers go to great lengths to make sure as many people see and save their portfolios as possible, which they spent a lot of effort and expense in creating. Because bytes are essentially free to replicate the cost of distributing our work diminishes but the money is still in the actual performance of our craft, just like other types of artists.
I kind of agree with you, that's why I originally decided it to be 'pay what you want'. I thought it'd be good for it to be heard. What really decided me to change the pricing, was something I heard at uni, a discussion about why do people think they should get the creative output from someone for nothing. It is after all something that can be enjoyed over and over again. People think nothing of spending £2 on a cup of coffee from costa, £2.50 on a sandwich or £3 on a pint of beer, all things that have a finite life and enjoyment period. The music that you own is there indefinitely, you may tire of it after a bit, then go onto something else, but unless you delete it, its still there and available for that moment that you feel you want to delve into it again.
  24.
Oh, and my thoughts are along the lines of being very happy that 5 out of 6 people considered the music worth paying for. I'd be focussing on the on the 100 that paid and figuring out what the 21 might be happy to spring for. Any opportunities to get the email addresses on bandcamp?
I can see where they are, but I think you have to subscribe to get the emails.
