Shipping a bass safely from UK to the USA. Best courier?
ambient replied to Karl Derrick's topic in General Discussion
UPS or Fedex, they're what a lot of companies seem to use. -
The Beatles always have a soporific effect on me too.

I think the new ones are made in Mexico.

Do they have a forklift truck in stock too ? Might be useful to carry it around

Open mic nights ? Just have business cards with you.

What's the difference between 1 direction, the Monkees, the bay city rollers, any number of bands from the 1980's, take that in the 90's, and various bands from contemporary times, nothing ! They all have their place in the history of pop music. Personally I've never seen the fascination with the who.

Quite laid back, as most of my stuff is. I'm using my new Dunlop volume pedal quite a bit. Comments most welcome. https://an-ending-ascend.bandcamp.com/track/such-a-lonely-place There are a few new things on there. I know it's not real bass playing, my apologies for that.

They have these things now called trains, pretty good really, they travel around to most places, and can be quite cheap, especially if you book in advance. There's also something called a coach, not the old thing pulled by horses, this uses an engine. Seriously, I've travelled all over trading basses and stuff, treat it as a day out. If you're doing a trade, then meet halfway somewhere nice. And ask at your local train station, sometimes it's cheaper to stop off halfway, and catch another train, rather than go all the way direct. For example, it's cheaper for me to travel from Birmingham to Cheltenham, and then on to Bristol, than it is to travel direct to Bristol, and only takes 30 minutes longer, but saves about £20.

Another plus for the clip on ones, you can't accidentally forget to switch off after tuning. Nothing worse than starting to play and being silent, then realising you've left the tuner pedal on .
yup, v pleased, just need to learn to play it, all those strings/.........
Just imagine it's a 4 string, with one extra string either side, concentrate on the middle 4 strings.

Intellitouch PT10. Michael Manring uses one, he has all sorts of weird and strange tunings. Works perfectly even on a low B, changes colour to green from red when you're in tune. Less than £10 from Amazon.

I'll play absolutely anything as long as I'm paid to. Listening definitely. I mostly listen to classical music, or experiment music, in fact I can't remember the last time that I listened to anything that had a regular rhythm section !
Does this help? http://www.soundonso...mi-softstep.htm
Thanks ! I had a Skype session with a guy from their technical support on Monday evening, that was a great help. He uses it for pretty much the same thing as I'm planning on, same looping software anyway. I've been busy the last few days, but plan on getting to grips this week with it, it's half term too !

I like aesthetic of the LP. I bought a load a few years ago, I have them around my place, leaning against the walls, I move them about so I have different ones in different places. Some really great artwork on some of them.
Always makes me laugh. Like bass guitar scales are different to other instrument's scales.
You say that, but I once had a guitarist ask me if bass notes were the same as normal notes. He was a bit dim though
You don't 'need' both unless you're likely to do a gig where it's essential that you read.
OK, I'll rephrase it, if you're in any way shape or form, half serious about playing for a living, then you need both No theatre MD, or professional band will wait while you pick the part out by ear.
-
You need both, simple as that. You have to be able to play by ear if the guys you're playing with don't know what they're doing or playing. Waste of time asking them for a chart if they don't even know what chords they're playing. You need to be able to read and understand basic theory at least if you want to play any sort of professional dep gig, theatre pit gig, cruise gig etc.
If she didn't have the right papers, then surely that is the job that immigration officers are supposed to do, isn't it?
I doubt she'd have even been allowed to get on the plane without the correct papers. -
It's no secret, I don't let others use any of my gear. Not at this stage in life. For those that do, I think level of maturity, personality, type of act/band and the caliber of the bass your letting someone else use comes into the equation. Things like high end, low end bass, these terms are all relative. What I think is high end you might think of as mid-range or low end. Blue
Low end or high end is immaterial to my mind, you've still bought it, and it's cost is relative to what you can afford. If some idiot breaks it then it's broken. -
Your favourite multi effects.? or single pedals..?
I have a GT10-B and from not being into effects at all..that is quite a jump. I've tried a ME50 quite a bit and that had one or two useable sounds but was a bit agricultural so I ended up using it like a stomp box... My current board is waaay too much for what I need and I can't be bothered to carry it for just one or two sounds.. The best case I can make for it is to claim my space on stage
The GT10B is amazing, I had one, it was just too heavy for me. -
This is going back some years but the band I was in at the time got a support with The Beyond, who were getting a lot of attention with their debut album. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the inevitable happened and my bass died, active circuit went bust as I remember and I didn't have a spare that night. The Beyond's bass player wasn't interested in lending me a bass, can't say as I blame him he had some v nice Modulus guitars if I remember correctly and Ampeg mega rig. So, we ended our set after two and half songs and to top it all a journo from Metal Hammer was there that night, said he was impressed with what he had heard but needed more than three songs to write a review. The rest of the band were well pissed off with me, can't say as I blame them either and I felt like a complete dick for not bringing backup. I learnt a lesson that night and have never gigged without a spare bass since. If a gig is important enough, you bring a spare. NO EXCUSES!
It's only in the last 3 weeks that I had 2 basses. In 20 years of gigging I've never had a problem, the worst that can happen is the battery go, but I change those regularly, and I can switch out the preamp.
He does what!? I wanna hear the story behind that one?
One of my tutors play like that, as does Lee Pomeroy. It would totally depend who it was. I've let guys at uni use my bass, but I know and trust them. I only play 6 string basses anyway -
Do you think the ray brown and Jazz book would be suitable for elec bass as well? If so how much for both. Or where are you based, I'm North London.
I think so, both are more for jazz theory, scales and exercises, neither have anything especially dedicated to upright bass. The jazz bass book is great, it looks at specific players and has examples of their playing. I'm in Kilburn. £20 for both ?
