1. There's a specific textbook that's been recommended to me. There's one on Amazon for over £60, which is too expensive for me. Anyone know a good site for secondhand books, or a good shop ? It's this one by the way http://www.amazon.co.uk/Modern-arranging-technique-comprehensive-orchestration/dp/B0007DU0SM/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1387114264&sr=1-2&keywords=modern+arranging+technique
2. From my experience of auditioning to get into uni, and from doing exams, the tutor knows exactly what you're up against, and isn't expecting you to be the next Jimmy Haslip or Tom Kennedy. Just put your ideas across is a coherent manner, without shooting from one to another in a kind of zigzag pathway. I do get nervous at auditions and in exams, but they see past that, they wouldn't be in their posts otherwise.
3.
Hi, String spacing is 16.5mm. I'm based in North Acton, West London. I'm out and about right now, so I'll have to measure the neck when I get home. I don't have callipers to measure depth, but I can tell you that it feels flatter than the current basses. If you'd like to visit the bass, that can be arranged. Decent cup of tea to be had, too.
Hi, It's the string spacing that's most important, I can gauge the neck width from that, sounds about right. I'll have a think, though it was really a fretless that I was after .
4. Id say the original is in G. G/Bm/D/Dsus4 or something like that anyway for the verse.
5. What's the neck width and string spacing like ? Whereabouts in London are you please ?
6. I've only ever seen one Wal in real life, it looked amazing. HOW could anyone paint such a thing ?
7. I think there's confusion between sockets and plugs going on
8. I like side dots, I played a Warwick a few years ago that had dots on the side where the frets would be, it was a dream to play and the dots were more visible than lines would've been. I'm getting a new fret less after Christmas and want that unlined but with side dots.
9.
i do. you get through a lot of straps!
It's a question of finding the one that works best. I'm only playing 6 string basses, and the one is quite a heavy instrument (Yamaha TRB6P), but very beautiful so I want to keep it. I like the Mono strap, but find them too long, and I don't like the bit that attaches to the strap lock. The comfort strapp is really nice, but a bit too elastic for a really heavy bass.
10. I don't think it's an actual scale as such, more like something made up from the altered or super locrian. The notes of the C altered are C, Db, D sharp, E, Gb (F sharp), G sharp (A flat), Bb, C. So it's sharing a few of them.
11. These usually get snapped up. Buy as a pressie and save £10 .
12. Lots of songs have diminished chords in them, certainly a lot of jazz standards. There's an old fleetwood mac one that uses (I think) an E dim chord (maybe Eb). There's a song by Bjork (can't remember which one), that uses the locrian mode in the bass line. YYZ by Rush uses a b5, so not really locrian, but alluding to it maybe.
13. I thought this album was all Francis Hylton.
14.
Has anyone ever used these? I'm wondering what they're like as I'm after something a bit more forgiving than a standard leather strap. I've tried a Bass Collection comfort strap before, but they feel a bit on the cheap side, and there's apparently the issue with the plastic snapping on them (and my basses ain't light) I'm just looking for some thoughts really.
Have you tried the genuine comfort strap, the one with the 2 p's , nothing cheap about them, and there's one for sale at the moment too.
15.
my friend is after one of these, I'll let him know.
Thanks . I'm sure you remember me buying it .
16. A month old, but my Mom just bought me a really nice leather strap, that seems to work better with my basses. In perfect condition, just a month old. £25 posted with the UK.
17. Short is too long, and the long is ridiculously so.
18.
Your mixing 3 and 4 note chords. 3 note: I major, II minor, III minor, IV major, V major, VI minor, VII diminished 4 note: I major 7th, minor 7th, minor 7th, IV major 7th, V (dominant) 7, VI minor 7th, VII m7b5
That's what I said, see my original post , that's why I said dominant 7 for the V. I wasn't talking about triads.
19.
i thought the 5th was simply called a major....unless its because the chord includes the 7th as the 3rd of said chord...which it does....i may of answered my own question? Even so its not got a flat 3rd so still a major...isn't it?
It's got a major 3rd but a flat 7, so it's called a dominant 7 chord. The triad (3 note chord) is major, so that may be where your confusion stems from. Harmonised into chords the major scale produces the following - I major, II minor, III minor, IV major, V dominant 7, VI minor, VII m7b5.
20.
....which is basically a minor pentatonic scale with an added flat 5th is used in blues when the usual 1,4,5 tunes use major chords? When i play to a 12 bar blues tune and over the 1,4,5 i use major chord tones and drop a flat 7th to spice things up.... ....unless the use of the blues scale isnt for tunes based on 1,4,5 progression! No doubt an obvious answer to this that i dont know!
The V isn't major, it's a dominant 7 chord.
