HK BASS 6 string fretless, A bargain ??? your thoughts please
ambient replied to funkgod's topic in General Discussion
Iv just found on another thred that they are almost a copy of a Marleaux bass http://www.marleaux-...s_galerien.html www.marleaux-bass.de And fair enough when you look down the galerie there is one that looks almost the same. Alot of very nice basses as well, Check out the back of the consat !!!
I was gonna say they look a bit Marleaux'ish. Cool looking bass. -
Here's my TRB6P, straight into Logic X via a Focusrite interface. No eq, effects or anything in Logic, the EQ was set flat on the bass, both controls at 12 o'clock, the mid select switch up. Sorry about the playing I rushed it just so's you can hear it. I've found it to be very versatile, the EQ isn't the most versatile out there, but the bass is over 20 years old. The sound is good from the offset though, the the purpose of the pre is to just add to it. https://soundcloud.com/ambientbassist Just added another quick one, this time with some EQ in Logic. Also some slap as requested, this is quite a versatile bass. The slap sound (excuse the playing, I don't do slap), is better than my Modulus and my Marcus Miller.
No-one is expecting them to write the same songs, but the production, arrangements and quality of songwriting has taken a huge backward step. With regards to production, listen to something off CA and then immediately listen to a dynamically similar track off MP (or Counterparts, even). CA sounds terrible. Arrangements? The solo in Freewill. The break in the middle of AFTK. By-Tor. The play-out of Natural Science. The marimba solo on Mission. The bass line on Enemy Within. I could go on for hours, but I won't...! i'm a big fan. I've got Test for Echo, Vapour Trails, CA, Snakes & Arrows. I've listened to them all hundreds of times. But I'll be honest - I'm struggling to name any memorable moments or melodies.
Your opinion, cool. Not mine though, each has it's own character, and I like the new stuff. That's music though, everyone has an opinion, and everyone's is valid. Some people still hate Bob Dylan for going electric, others don't think there's been a good jazz album since 1950 something or other.
Personally I'm a huge fan of the early stuff. I don't much like Clockwork Angels. That's the great thing about Rush though. Their career spans such a long time and covers so many styles that it is possible (and quite usual) for people to be fans of a certain era but to not like other periods. I really like the simplicity and honesty of Counterparts. And I love Geddy's tone on the Jazz bass(es). I never cared for his Wal sound or style, with those rubber-band Funkmaster strings. Dog Years is the standout track from this Rush era for me. Top lyrics too.
That's it though isn't it ? They have evolved so much over the years, that it's quite possible to like a period but not another. They don't want to keep producing yet another YYZ or Farewell to kings, they've done that, it's in the past this is now.

What to do when you got mardy neighbours?
ambient replied to Prime_BASS's topic in General Discussion
Yeah bring back the like button Back on topic. Sometimes you do get people, neighbours or whatever who'll moan just for the sake of it. Where we used to live, our neighbours were really nice people, but soooooo noisy ! They'd have the radio on in the garden on a sunny summer afternoon, listening to the local awful radio station. No big deal but annoying if you didn't want to listen to it on a sunny summer afternoon. The guy played darts in a local pub, and would practice with his dart board on a joining wall, you'd hear thunk, thunk thunk, followed by a slight pause as he retrieved his darts, then the same again for maybe an hour or 2. Anyway when I was about 14 I started playing guitar, just a classical acoustic, you've never heard moaning like it from her when I'd be practicing. Despite my room not adjoining their house, quite often she'd complain about my playing even when I hadn't been. She just knew I'd got a guitar so blamed that if she'd maybe been woken at night by something, or had heard music. But to the guy who started this post, right now I'm listening to dream theater quite loudly through my studio monitors, my parents are both out at work and I know the neighbours are out, so I can do so without disturbing anyone. You just need to consider the appropriateness of playing your bass loudly in a multi occupancy dwelling for any length of time, it just isn't right dude. Blaming soundproofing or lack of doesn't come into it, it's not there so you need to be hyper careful. I doubt you'd get much sympathy from your landlord, especially if you make a fuss about the lack of soundproofing. I should imagine it'd be expensive to lift all the floor boards and get soundproofing put in. Plus it'd be your neighbours who suffer the hassle of getting the floorboards up, if they're above you. -
...in your opinion. It makes me laugh when people have their car stereos way too loud. Their attitude is, 'check out what I'm into, isn't it great?' But it's never Mozart, is it??
There should be a 'like' button on this site, like on Facebook -
Each album is of its time, I think anyway. Roll the bones had some great tracks, ghost of a chance for example. I sometimes think it's a case that people like a particular album or a band from from a particular period, they don't then like it that the band evolves, their playing changes, what they're actually listening to at the time is maybe different, then of course there are happenings in their personal lives that affect the song writing. Personally I liked clockwork angels, but I'm not a huge fan of the early stuff.

I practice maybe 7 or 8 hours a day, but have the volume turned down I can hear it but I can't be heard in any other room. If I'm practicing late at night after everyone had gone to bed, then I'm unamped. It's a question of thoughtfulness, I don't wanna hear other peoples music or tv, I don't expect them to have to put up with me. Just turn down dude. -

Shallow grave and a new patio. -
I think I was told that you only don't pay if you've been abroad for more than 6 months. I was on a P and O ship, and got paid when I came home. I just declared it in that years return. Either way, you'll get taxed by someone, sorry. You really need to speak to your tax office, someone telling you something on a muso forum won't be much of a defence if you get it wrong.
-
You do pay tax on what you earn, it's treated as if your earning in this country. I played on one a few years ago, and just declared it on my return.

Some for photos. Photo 4 shows the only real mark on the bass, it's been bumped at some stage and caused a small (2mm) white mark on the bottom of the neck by fret 5. It is just a white mark, and can't be felt while playing, I genuinely only noticed it yesterday. Just mentioning it now for honesty's sake.

6 Strings/Custom Builds - What did YOU take into account?
ambient replied to BenTunnicliffe's topic in Bass Guitars
The main thing to consider is the neck width and string spacing. My Yamaha has 19mm spacing at the bridge and the neck is quite wide. My other 6 has 17mm spacing, consequently the neck is a lot slimmer. Both are very comfortable to play. The Yamaha actually requires a bit less thought when you play it, the tighter spacing on my other bass requires a lot more accuracy, especially If you're playing something requiring string skipping. Why the unusual tuning ? Personally I get annoyed when people ask why I've got a 6 string bass. -
Musicians Union, BASCA, PCAM, etc - worthwhile?
ambient replied to tedmanzie's topic in General Discussion
I'm in the mu, you get insurance as part of the package which is good, and free advice etc. I'm a student though, so it's only £20 for me, I'm not sure that I'd join if I had to pay the full price. -
Yeah mine's pretty quiet as well. I bought a Fishman for mine and it's made a real difference.
Thanks, I may try one .

I bought an NS NXT5 string EUB a while ago. I've only really used it for recording up to now, but have a few live things coming up soon. It seems to have rather a low output. I used to have an EA Micro 550 head, and it seemed fine through one channel on that, my new amp though, I'm having to really increase the gain. Should I be using an external preamp ? Maybe something like the Fishman Platinum, that'd be useful I guess for EQ'ing it too.
