1.
Had a bit of a sesh on the 5-er tonight. I'm trying to wean myself off that reliance on the lower positions, which caused problems when I had to cope with higher notes, especially when sight reading. Some things end up being a lot easier too, e.g. the riff at the start of Rescue Me. I will be going back to the 4-string, but I'll try and stay off it for the time being.
I find sight-reading easier on a 5 than on a 4 string, mainly 'cos you can stay in one position and play across the neck rather than along it, concentrating on the chart and not on where you are on the neck. Pretty much all of my playing is from the 5th fret upwards, from there I can cover 2 octaves from a low E at the 5th fret on the B string up to an E on the 9th fret on the G string. It's good practice to practice away from the bass, just visualise playing stuff while you're bored at work or standing in a queue or something. Just visualise where all the B's are, or where all the A's are on the neck. Then put that into practice when you get home. just sit for 10 minutes a day and pick a note at random, and play all of them on the neck. Practice scales and triads etc all over the neck. You'll very soon be as familiar on your 5 as you are on a 4 string. You'll wonder why you didn't get one years ago .
2.
My genz shuttlemax9.2 has two channels (genz amps are popular with upright bassists anyway even the single channel ones) at the moment I can use my eub without touching anything at all and I put the fishman preamp into the fx return for the db
Genz isn't something I'd thought of, thanks for that. I was looking at their amps a day or so ago because of the valves, but not something I'd considered for the EUB.
3. I'm about to buy an EUB, and really think that I need to consider getting a 2 channel amp for gigs where I play both. There's the EA Micro 550, but are there any other contenders ?
4. I think the sound is usually preceded by "God my back hurts, I'm gonna have to get something lighter".
5. A definite no to anything like Grado. They're designed to sound good, which isn't something you want in a pair of headphones when you're trying to mix on them. I've got a pair of Sony MDR-7506's, which are or were pretty much the headphones for monitoring while tracking in studios. They're supposed to be relatively 'flat' sounding, and are good for picking up details while mixing, but I would not trust them to mix on alone.
6. What a great thread, really interesting to see how people have gotten around the space (or lack of) problem.
7.
I've upgraded to X and so far everything is working from 9 to X perfectly. I don't really use third party plugins so can't vouch for compatibility of these. (I wouldn't know which are 32/64 bit anyway!) X is more intuitive and pleasant to use so far, but for most tasks it's pretty much the same as 9. Flex pitch is rather amazing!
I've only been using Logic 9 express, so I've been missing having the Space designer plug in, we've got 9 Pro at uni. The flex pitch does indeed look interesting. I've been using Melodyne for the last 3 months. You can download a months free trial, but you have to be connected to the internet for it to work. I've just gone onto the site each month and started the free trial again using a different email address.
8. The express version on CD with all packaging including the licence. If you have the licence then you can install and run this one your Mac. I'm downloading the new version Logic X. £30 including recorded delivery postage.
9. I am going to upgrade to Logic X. Guessing that the release of Logic X was imminent, I bought a copy of Logic 9 express for a silly price off Ebay in January, I figured thee was no point in spending £149 when by waiting a few months I could buy the latest version (for actually less than 9 was selling for then). Does anyone know what happens to everything I've composed using logic 9 express ? Should I delete Logic 9 express or will it disappear when I've downloaded Logic X ?
10. Thanks for your replies. I'm gonna stick with my 2x10 for now, and see how it goes.
11.
Absolutely! I'm trying to find a good guitar plugin! Logic's guitars are really poor, I think.
I don't necessarily agree with this. Straight out of the box yes, but the sounds are there if you spend the time tweaking them to how YOU want them. This is an example that I did in a hurry, the 'guitar' starts about 1.40 in. https://soundcloud.com/plasticart/my-mind
12. I'm about to buy an NS 5 string EUB. I'm just wondering what cabs people recommend to use with them ? I'm gonna be treating it as an EUB, an instrument in its own right, I'm not really expecting it to sound exactly like a real double bass, but I may do some small jazz gigs, so getting somewhere close would probably be nice. I'm currently using a Markbass rig that I bought from off here at the beginning of the year, I've got an LM2 and a 2x10 cab. Would I be better off changing the 2x10 for a 1x12 or would the 2x10 be OK ? I'm thinking the 12 inch speakers would produce a deeper sound, with more low mid ?
13. Interesting, especially considering I'm about to get an EUB. Out of interest, what cab did you partner this with for double bass ?
14. If it told you B major then you'd have to remember that B major contains D, F, G, A, and C sharp, if it said E major, then you'd have to remember that it contains C, G, D, and F sharp etc. So I think the current system is better, no need to remember it 'cos you get a reminder at the start of the music. Just do a bit of practice each day, it soon adds up and you pretty soon get familiar with it.
15. You know I'm sure I posted about this yesterday, but it seems to have vanished ? Most odd. . http://www.musicmarket.org.uk/ Has anyone ever used this site ?
16. Every time I play outside it empties down .
17. Don't know what this site is like, just saw it on Farcebook. http://www.musicmarket.org.uk/
18. It's gonna be warm....................seriously ? The only thing misleading in your title is the word heat . I'd have thought the biggest threat to your gear is it getting stolen.
19. Don't buy them then . I think there's too much hype about strings, I wouldn't buy cheap ones, but I certainly wouldn't buy expensive ones either. D'addario are great strings can be had for a lot cheaper, they last me ages too, and I do at least 5 hours practice a day.
20. I got the album, I'm a fan of both Hogarth and Barbieri. Gotta admit though, I was a bit underwhelmed by the album.
21.
Just out of interest, what make barrel socket did you buy?
Hi, It was a Neutrik.
22.
You don't need a bass book. Go to a charity shop and get any book on music theory and then transfer the information to the bass. It'll cost you £1
Very true ! A major is the same played one a violin, xylophone or a bass .
23.
I still own two Fenders that were each more expensive than an Alleva Coppolo and a Mike Lull added together. Far more attractive investment than a bloody pension fund. One was made in 1965: And one was made in 1957:
oOOOOH, those are beautiful dude. I especially like the '57 .
24.
wow i did not expect so many to agree!! ha-ha! Anyway why i thought post the tread was because i was recently in a shop bass direct, a fantastic shop, i went there to look at a mayones or whatever its called on sale at £1300.... but i also half kept looking at the fender usa p bass v deluxe at a great price (not made anymore with the Bill Lawrence P/u near the bridge) .... i seen it a few times on the site over 2 months and Wonder why on earth is that beut still for sale?? its says mint had a good price and was a 5 string ....perfect for me... so i made the trip from Essex, and looked at all the stunning eye candy (but not for long) and picked up the mayonees ... and then put the thing down again after about 2mins playing..it was a heavy bugger and looked like a gem of exotic-ness .. rather too much bordering on tacky even... then went to look at the fender.... that was that... this baby is mine had it a month now great bass... im guessing it did not get that much of a look in at the shop, but to me it was the best thing in there regardless of price tag.., after a jazz 1974 i had a while back, this is probably the best playing bass iv had..i did go to get one many years ago, but it was like £1500 then so i passed on it ....The guy in the shop Mark i think his name is said about my fender its a great bass but the pre amp is naff..and to swap it out... i thought ...what is he talking about? this bass sounds as sweet as a nut! why on earth would i wanna stick in a £300 pre amp .. its not he same fender anymore! with a slap sound out of this world, and punchy finger style why change it? ...ok i know its not the passive fender but hey i can say the same about them too, fantastic.. Reading through the posts on this tread, many have all been there high end basses, trying to squeeze out the sound imbedded in our head from years back... then as said above changing out p/u s n pre amps... (which i never did, i just got rid) only to end up selling the f***er and losing tons of dosh and swapping it back to a 2/3 knob passive bass.... haha.. It is merely my thoughts and experience over many years of playing different beasts... the 70-80s jap basses though like the arias and Yamaha they are very cool too.... they are superb. Do bear in mind its only my personal opinion after 30 years with as many and more, much more even basses i have owned in this time..
What the guy in the shop is talking about when he says to swap the preamp, is to spend more money with him for something you don't need, and is is way overpriced anyway .
25. You have to adopt a portfolio approach to work. Playing gigs, teaching, writing, busking, sessions, running open mic's, producing, engineering, journalism. It all helps, the key word is versatility. If someone phones you and asks you to do a gig the following night then you need to be able to, this sort of thing is usually for sight-readers only, so learn to read music ! Cruise ship work is brilliant, you get paid to travel on a luxury ship to holiday places, again you need to be able to sight-read. Get to know Logic and/or Protools.
