I ordered a set of double bass strings from Thomman - £60 cheaper than anywhere in the UK - they were shipped with UPS and arrived in three days.

In perfect condition. I bought it new a few months ago, it’s done just a handful of quiet jazz gigs. This is the latest incarnation of this little amp, without the external power supply. It connects to the mains with a standard kettle type connector. The gig bag is an official PJB one, but is designed for the PJB cub, consequently it’s a little bigger than the D4. I’ve found this is actually very useful, enabling you to carry cables and other bits and pieces in the same bag. The Siamese kitten seen in the one photo is not included.

Whatever applies to the bass player surely applies to any musician? The three Ts: Timing Tone Taste

I believe it’s for iOS devices only. I’ve got it on my phone, so it’s not just iPad.

I’ve been a huge fan of Matt’s playing for absolutely ages. I’ve been lucky enough to see him live a couple of times, and he did a masterclass at my university once. I just started subscribing to his newly released app. It’s really worth looking at if you’re into what he does, or into jazz playing. There’s a whole series of workshops, and live things, as well as his music. https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/matt-garrison/id1070972204

I don’t see a problem in adapting lyrics, or even not playing a song if it goes against modern thinking, or it makes a band member uncomfortable. It happens in literature too. In Charlie and the chocolate factory for instance, the Oompah Lumpas were Pygmy slaves in the first edition. It was rewritten in the 1960s.

Definitely. Though surely they’re aware of the economic damage too? -

Apparently, from what I’ve just been told, UK based artists, unless they’re using an EU based trucking company to move their gear about can only make three European stops. Then they have to return back to the UK. So less work for an already struggling UK music industry, and another B####t bonus for our European friends. -
I hadn’t either. I guess it’s the sign of a good session player that you can not sound like yourself?

Identify which part or parts you’re struggling with. Then break it part down into smaller segments and practice them. Slow them down, and play them to a metronome or click. Then practice joining two together, etc, etc, until you’ve got the whole thing done.

I believe it was known as ghosting. I read an interview a while ago with someone - Guy Pratt possibly - he was talking about the huge number of tracks that he’d played on, with everyone assuming it was the band member playing.

So classic that in all my forty years I’ve never heard it before today, and hope never to have to again.😆.
-
I’ve never heard of it. Are you maybe overthinking it? Unless you’re in a tribute band will anyone really know that you haven’t got it 100% right?

Happy birthday 🎂

I bought these a while ago for my PhD work. They’ve only been out of the house once or twice in the past two years, and only used a couple of times at home. In perfect condition, with carry case, clips, plugs, and I’ll include some furry mini-windjammers. £425. Price includes Special Delivery postage.

That’s a shame. Musescore is really good.
-
Does Musescore work on an iPad? There was one I got quite excited about a couple of years ago, bizarrely it wasn’t iPad compatible. I use forScore for gigs, though I don’t think that’s what you’re after?

Michael Manring, then Steve Lawson a short time later. Until then I’d been frustrated that people saw bass as serving a function, rather than an instrument in its own right.

It’s not really turning out like they promised is it? It’s like being sold Ursula Andress emerging from the Caribbean, but being delivered Ann Widdecombe emerging from Whitley Bay draped in seaweed.
-
I know VAT would be payable if you sold them to someone in the UK. I didn’t realise you’d have to if you were bringing them back with you.

The ringleaders knew full well what the consequences would be. The people they convinced to vote for it weren’t so aware though, despite what they say.

I’ve never watched one, but a lot of people tell me the Scot’s bass lessons videos are good. I believe you have to subscribe to them? A tutor of mine from uni has recently started something too. There’s a link here: https://www.withbassinmind.com

Setup recommendations in Birmingham area please.
ambient replied to ambient's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Just a quick follow up on this post. I took my bass in to Kevin last week, he did a fantastic job. He gave my DB a good look over, set it up: reshaped the bridge, changed the strings, oiled the tuners, reset the sound post which was slightly out of position, and gave it a good clean. All for £80, which is half the price anywhere else was asking, even for a basic setup. He does all the repairs and setups for Birmingham Conservatoire, it was a friend who works there recommended him to me. He also builds the most beautiful looking instruments. He’s moving away from Birmingham down to Devon, the conservatoire is so pleased with his work they’re going to courier instruments to him. https://www.ksblutherie.com
