I’ve been a huge fan of Matt’s playing for absolutely ages. I’ve been lucky enough to see him live a couple of times, and he did a masterclass at my university once. I just started subscribing to his newly released app. It’s really worth looking at if you’re into what he does, or into jazz playing. There’s a whole series of workshops, and live things, as well as his music. https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/matt-garrison/id1070972204

I don’t see a problem in adapting lyrics, or even not playing a song if it goes against modern thinking, or it makes a band member uncomfortable. It happens in literature too. In Charlie and the chocolate factory for instance, the Oompah Lumpas were Pygmy slaves in the first edition. It was rewritten in the 1960s.

Definitely. Though surely they’re aware of the economic damage too? -

Apparently, from what I’ve just been told, UK based artists, unless they’re using an EU based trucking company to move their gear about can only make three European stops. Then they have to return back to the UK. So less work for an already struggling UK music industry, and another B####t bonus for our European friends. -
I hadn’t either. I guess it’s the sign of a good session player that you can not sound like yourself?

Identify which part or parts you’re struggling with. Then break it part down into smaller segments and practice them. Slow them down, and play them to a metronome or click. Then practice joining two together, etc, etc, until you’ve got the whole thing done.

I believe it was known as ghosting. I read an interview a while ago with someone - Guy Pratt possibly - he was talking about the huge number of tracks that he’d played on, with everyone assuming it was the band member playing.

So classic that in all my forty years I’ve never heard it before today, and hope never to have to again.😆.
-
I’ve never heard of it. Are you maybe overthinking it? Unless you’re in a tribute band will anyone really know that you haven’t got it 100% right?

I bought these a while ago for my PhD work. They’ve only been out of the house once or twice in the past two years, and only used a couple of times at home. In perfect condition, with carry case, clips, plugs, and I’ll include some furry mini-windjammers. £425. Price includes Special Delivery postage.

That’s a shame. Musescore is really good.

Does Musescore work on an iPad? There was one I got quite excited about a couple of years ago, bizarrely it wasn’t iPad compatible. I use forScore for gigs, though I don’t think that’s what you’re after?

Michael Manring, then Steve Lawson a short time later. Until then I’d been frustrated that people saw bass as serving a function, rather than an instrument in its own right.

It’s not really turning out like they promised is it? It’s like being sold Ursula Andress emerging from the Caribbean, but being delivered Ann Widdecombe emerging from Whitley Bay draped in seaweed.
-
I know VAT would be payable if you sold them to someone in the UK. I didn’t realise you’d have to if you were bringing them back with you.

The ringleaders knew full well what the consequences would be. The people they convinced to vote for it weren’t so aware though, despite what they say.

I’ve never watched one, but a lot of people tell me the Scot’s bass lessons videos are good. I believe you have to subscribe to them? A tutor of mine from uni has recently started something too. There’s a link here: https://www.withbassinmind.com

Setup recommendations in Birmingham area please.
ambient replied to ambient's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Just a quick follow up on this post. I took my bass in to Kevin last week, he did a fantastic job. He gave my DB a good look over, set it up: reshaped the bridge, changed the strings, oiled the tuners, reset the sound post which was slightly out of position, and gave it a good clean. All for £80, which is half the price anywhere else was asking, even for a basic setup. He does all the repairs and setups for Birmingham Conservatoire, it was a friend who works there recommended him to me. He also builds the most beautiful looking instruments. He’s moving away from Birmingham down to Devon, the conservatoire is so pleased with his work they’re going to courier instruments to him. https://www.ksblutherie.com -
If anyone sees a white TKS112 for sale... it's pinched.

You should have received a code which he would scan as proof that you’ve collected it. Without that and with no proof of postage/delivery I should imagine a refund would be straightforward. I won an eBay auction for an effects pedal a few years ago. I was the only bidder, it was a really stupid price. The seller contacted me a few days later to say that he’d been on his way to the post office to post it, he’d stopped briefly to go shopping and whatever I’d won had been stolen from his car. He just refunded me. Then a month later he was selling it again, the theft was just an excuse to cancel the transaction. -

This is as dodgy as hell. How did the scammer know the seller's address? I bought a double bass from eBay a few weeks ago. It was obviously collection only. I was sent a collection code by eBay which the seller scanned using his phone, as proof that I’d collected it. I had no way of knowing where to collect it from though until the seller sent me his address. -
Would it be a good idea to remove the valves and package them separately?

The UK ended FoM, ending it was one of the linchpins of Brexit. What many failed to grasp was that we weren’t just ending it for EU citizens, we were ending it for ourselves too. We could have opted to remain part of the SM - a Norway style agreement - that would have solved the problem with NI, it would have solved the problems that exporters are facing. We chose not to though. The UK was offered visa-free travel for creative industry workers, we would have had to reciprocate though, so we said no. This is despite the fact that the creative industries employs 3.2 million people, or 10% of the country’s workforce, and contributed some £111 billion to the economy in 2018 (source ONS). -

A good friend of mine plays for the CBSO. They used to tour regularly across Europe. The excess cost now will be prohibitive, imagine how much it’ll cost to arrange visas/work permits for an eighth piece orchestra plus their entourage? You might dismiss it because they’re an orchestra, but it was work for both the musicians and the people they travel with. Further to my earlier post. A friend of mine is a DJ. He was saying last week about the fantastic times he spent working in clubs in the Spanish and Greek islands when he was younger. He wouldn’t be allowed to do it now. The ticket touts that drive holiday makers mad handing out flyers and trying to get them to visit timeshare apartments, tended to be British having working holidays. They won’t be allowed to work abroad. I’m going off topic I know, but I get annoyed with people making flippant remarks about the loss of FoM.
