There’s flats and flats. I’ve always hated flats that go thump or thud, but loved flats that have zing and are articulate. Thomastik are by far my favourite.

I know, it was a conversation with one of my music technology students that gave me the idea. His main instrument was drums, he was having lessons and looking for somewhere that was; in his words “a safe environment to play with other people”.

I actually considered setting up an evening workshop a few years ago, whereby people new to playing in an ensemble could meet up, and play through a song. We’d decide on the song beforehand, everyone would be sent charts or TAB, and would have a week to work on their part. There would be a new song each week, gradually building up the attendees repertoire. Surprisingly there wasn’t any interest in it, so I didn’t bother.

The excersises that improved your playing

If you want to improve soloing, transcribe solos by your favourite players. Then analyse what they’re doing over the chords. -
Hand made in Italy in 2013. This is a 33” scale 5 string bass, in beautiful condition. Featuring a chambered swamp ash body with olive wood facings, bird’s eye maple fretboard, three piece ash/maple through-neck with purple-heart tone block, and a flame maple rear cap. The electronics are custom wound for W&T dual coil pickups, and an East SP 3 band preamp with passive tone. Gold plated ETS bridge, gold plated Hipshot tuners, there’s a d-tuner fitted too on the E/B string, and gold plated Dunlop straplocks. Weight is 9lb or 4kgs. The bass is really effortless to play. I’ve tended to have it tuned E to C, in fact I’ve really experimented a lot with different tunings on the instrument. The Low B; or whatever you choose to tune it to, always sounds full and balanced, yet very clear and articulate. I’ve included lots of photos and some video, which might give you an idea of how it sounds, though excuse the playing. I would really prefer collection only, then you can sit and try it for as long as you want, to make sure you’re happy with it. 755B0606-2E8B-4BB6-B851-A82BB42164FD.MOV 03E26FB8-6E76-489F-911D-5FCBE583751F.MOV IMG_0385.MOV

Count the beats for 15 seconds, multiply it by four.

Good luck to him and his new classic rock band.

Black Friday Deals has started. Give your heads up

Cycling '74 have some very good offers. I just took out a student one year subscription on Max MSP for £30. I usually ignore Black Friday, I'm not one for buying something I don't need, just because it might, or as is often the case, is not discounted. In this case I was going to subscribe anyway. -
Give them a phone call, if they say yes, get it in writing. In my experience insurance companies are very good at getting out of settling claims.

Plain silly statements by those who should know better.

There was a tutor on my BMus course who kept making stupid comments about me playing a 6 string bass. You just ignore these people, if you’re happy playing what you play, how you play, then that’s all that matters. The problem is, novice players take notice, and end up spending money they don’t need to spend. -
Never be envious, enjoy what you do. That’s all that matters 😁

Make sure you drink plenty of water, sipping it, not slurping it down. Turmeric and black pepper capsules are pretty good I believe, as is Glucosamine.

Definitely. Cassettes are extremely popular too. I’ve released two cassettes, one through my own label, the other through another label that only releases on cassette. What I did with CDs; to help keep the price down was have some CDRs printed with really nice artwork. Then I just burned onto them whatever was ordered, as and when. That works well if you’re planning subsequent releases. I bought some quality recycled card wallets, and designed an artwork stamp that I had made. People seemed to like the recycled and handmade thing.

Of course in my opinion, also though through my experience, which can’t be disputed because it’s happened. Making the decision to concentrate on playing solo, composing my own music, and having artistic freedom over everything I do has paid off. I could have continued as I was, playing for whoever would pay me, for example I played on a cruise ship one summer and absolutely hated it. I’m now much happier, and satisfied.

I play solo. I played in Paris two weeks ago, I’m in Stockholm in three weeks time. Last year I played in Holland, Paris twice the year before. Many in the UK too, including one with one of my biggest influences Steve Lawson. I got so fed up with band politics, I’m also not particularly people orientated either. Solo is much more artistically rewarding too. I do the occasional collaborative thing, gigs and recording, I’d never join a band again though.
