  1. Two of the drummers I play with both also play vibes. The one is also an amazing pianist, I think it was his second study at uni. There were more drummers than bassists where I studied. Everyone regardless of their main instrument had to learn piano too, and do all the same H+T and aural studies classes.
  2. Lots, I don’t think I play with any musician that doesn’t read.
  3. The notes just follow the chromatic scale. I’ve had students who’ve found it useful learning the notes by picking random ones, say B, then just play every B on the instrument, then say every E. If you can play scales then play a scale but don’t start on the root, maybe start on an open string; for instance play an A major scale but start with your open E string, so open E but then play the F# somewhere else on the bass, not on the 2nd fret of the E. That was something one of my tutors at uni got us to do.
  4. This is mostly manipulated sound material that I recorded during several recent field-recording trips to Wales, though some of it is synth, I like to use synth in a way that it emulates natural sounds. It's based on the Welsh coastline. I've recently spent days and days walking miles and miles along the coast recording stuff on the cliffs and deserted beaches there. It's also based on a local legend about land that was in ancient times swallowed by the sea. It will eventually, hopefully anyway form part of four pieces that will make up my final composition portfolio for my MA.
  5. Status do double ball end, as do bass direct.
  6. It’s an afternoon affair.
  7. I didn't see this, I've posted about it in General discussion, sorry. One of my absolute favourite musicians. I definitely want to come to this.
  8. Just saw this on Facebook. One of my absolute favourite players. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1776123262467327&id=130263647053305
  9. I have to disagree with the greatest bassist of our generation bit; you actually sound like my tutor from uni 😁. I saw Jeff jamming at a guitar show with Laurence Cottle. Laurence’s playing was beautiful, melodic, well phrased and tasteful. Jeff on the other hand was like a robot, totally lacking in emotion and everything that made Laurence’s playing so beautiful. I know that everyone has their own favourite players, but I can honestly think of a lot of better ones; Jonas Hellborg, Michael Manring, Anthony Jackson, Matthew Garrison just off the top of my head.
  10. Nice to see so many people sharing my intense dislike for the daily heil. 😊
  11. I saw some racist stuff that he posted on Facebook a few years ago. He didn't realise what he'd said, even when people pointed it out to him. Maybe he's been at it again? One of my tutors at uni was really into him, consequently we had to learn loads of things of his. To me he epitomises everything that's wrong with 'fusion', i.e. why play 4 notes when I can play 16.
  12. I think it's a way of disguising where you are. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network
  13. I thought he was Nigerian?
  14. I just had this from someone who joined earlier today.
  15. Tc electronic polytune clip.
  16. It does, but you can use normal ones too, there’s a set of little bolt things that clamp them into place at the end of the neck. Status use a similar thing.
  17. There was a similar thing done by the MU recently.
  18. Hmm, wonder what shall I buy when I sell 😁
  19. This is 27 years old but has recently been completely refurbished/refinished and refretted, consequently it’s in mint condition. The refinish was done by Sims guitars in Kent, they’ve done a truly fantastic job. It features a thuya root face and back with an ash core. The neck is wenge and maple with a 24 fret ebony fretboard which has a very thin band of lighter wood purfling running along the edge. It’s 34” scale length with twin Kent Armstrong humbucking pickups and a Bartolini preamp. The bass is amazingly easy and comfortable to play, and very lightweight. The string spacing is about 18mm at the bridge. I would prefer collection from Birmingham, or I can deliver for train fare. The instrument comes with a Hiscox case. Trades welcome for cheaper 6 string basses plus cash my way. I particularly like the headless thing, so maybe Status?
  20. Sarcastic comments like this are one reason why my visits here are growing more and more infrequent. You’re a moderator too. The OP is mostly talking about how little the insured value is. My comment actually says something quite different, i.e that instruments aren’t covered at all, which is the case with parcelforce and possibly others.
  21. Lots will take money from you to insure instruments, despite them not actually covering instruments.
  22. I’m only aware of him from watching the blues brothers film. I always though it was mad guitar Murphy for some reason.
