I did want these basses to be recognisably different from our UK handmade instruments – however both headstocks have been used by me before – so there is some continuity here. But as I said earlier, there will be quite a bit of re-working and refinement before we go into production and things will change, plus there are a couple of other models in the range not yet seen... It has already been decided that only the Overwater logo will appear on the front of the headstock on the production models. Prices will start around £329 in the UK for the passive ‘Classic J’ basses and around £449 for the active ‘Aspiration’ – raising up to around £899 for the ‘full Overwater spec’’ ‘Elite’ models.. Five strings and fretless will be available before the end of the year...
Hi Chris, Been watching the thread with interest and am very interested in trying these out, will you be stocking them at the Jam Factory? Would love to visit and catch up. Best wishes Dave Anderson
This may sound stupid, I'm an amateur "producer" after all, but I've looked and can't find what I'm looking for... so here goes nothing; I have a DVD that I got free in a magazine, and it has a shed load of drum samples, really decent quality and royalty free. Each sample is a .wav of each individual pad (kick, snare, hat etc..) and I was just wondering how I can go about using them. I've been using reaper and I'm really comfortable with it now, so I was kinda hoping there's an easy way to it. Perhaps there's a vst plugin which lets you load and edit the samples, and then trigger them with MIDI? I was kinda hoping this was the way, but I fear it's gonna be much harder than that. I have actually been wondering about this for a while, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers in advance
What sequencer are you using? Reason, logic and Cubase have their own soft sampler which can have these individual hits loaded into key maps and triggered via midi. Quite complicated to explain via messages, there will probably be something on youtube? Logics ESX24 Dave
Thanks for your help. YOu may have saved me from a major headache and pocket ache. Theres nothing to save me from Midi hell now......
MIDI Hell simplified! Roland PK5 or try the Elka PM13 or PM18s simply plug in and press the notes with your feet, Ive done it for years with various samplers and so has Doctor of the bass.
While I agree with most of the stuff said on this thread, I don't see your point there. Do you expect bands to bring their own generator to gigs to power their amps or something?
No, As a working musician for 20 years and FOH sound engineer for 5, I would ALWAYS expect anyone playing to bring enough power extensions and leads to make sure THEIR gear is powered up. It's no-one else's responsibility to provide an extension, if you come to a gig with no 4 gang and need one to power all your pedals and amp then it's a fair assumption that one night you will encounter a gig you wont be able to play due to your bad organisation or laziness. It's not too much to expect, but i get it almost every time i do FOH. However EVERY TIME I play a gig, I can power every bit of gear i need to play the gig plus spares. Dave
When I asked them about monitors they said 'we dont care, we know our songs' Went on and played brilliantly. Loved them for that I really did!
Its so refreshing when you get artists who are like that, knowing your material and stage levels. I've also had that acoustic duo scenario as well LOL
God my teeth are grinding! Worst example I ever had working FOH was a kid who turned up to play an acoustic set in a little pub I was regulaly working. The promoter booked the most awful lineups for the venue but I was getting paid so I did it. This kid had a Stagg electro acoustic bowlback thing. Unplugged didnt sound bad at all but very quiet. I plugged him in and got 20 minutes of 'it doesn't sound right' 'make it sound more like an acoustic' Which I did but still not good enough for him. I kept trying and in the end he sort of wandered off?! So he quietens down then when he comes on to actually play he stops mid song and begins saying again it doesn't sound right he is a professional blah blah blah (what professional stops in the middle of a song or does not organise this properly in sound check?) He said again 'it doesn't sound right' SO I asked him well what do you want more hi mid or low? less hi mid low, less verb more verb WHAT DO YOU WANT! to which he replied 'I dont know the techncal terms' I couldn't believe it what musician even a beginer does not understand hi mid or low???!?!?
Ha ha Classic, I've had loads of "I cant hear myself i the monitors" you go and talk through the mic and its BLASTING through the monitors and they go back and whisper. One female vocalist was so quiet I pfl'd her to my headphones and i could hear the un mic'd bass louder through HER mic than her vocal. I suppose its just a lack of experience, it only really irritates me when that is combined with arrogance and un professional behaviour.

From a front of house point of view there is nothing worse than a band turning up expecting all of their previously undisclosed requirements catered for "we must have 13 separate monitor mixes and 41 DI's" Tell me in advance and i can sort it and have you heard of sub mixing you lazy git. or "have you got any power mate" ER no I run the PA and have enough sockets to run my gear you muppet, YOUR amp is YOUR responsibility! Deep breaths and relax...................

Finally joining the 'covers/function' scene
cd_david replied to Musicman20's topic in General Discussion
I have played the covers scene for about 16 years and the thing that sticks in my mind is The audience wants entertaining NOT educating! A couple of singers/ guitarists i have worked with like to play music they like, usually slow or obscure, people go out for a night and want to be happy not sent to sleep, play a few high energy songs and then try a few slow or obscure ones and you will clearly see the effect. To be honest its probably the reason for the success or failure of many a northern pub band and tbh the reason i finally left my last gigging band. Who is the band out of interest? Cheers Dave -
Hi BY I would check the forum, there is always a few Rays for sale, mostly 3 eqs. To be honest there is little to be wary of on a musicman bass, the build quality is absolutely faultless, the finishes are really well applied and durable, I prefer a lacquer on the neck but if you buy one with an oil finish it would only cost you about 60-80 o have a luthier apply a satin clear coat. The only problem i have heard people complaining about is a quiet G string, I own 6 and this is not a problem on any of mine and i presume if you raise the pickup at the bottom it would sort it? Colour doesn't really alter tone but does affect resale, fingerboards options are mainly rosewood and maple, prefer the look of maple and the sound of rosewood, maple exaggerates the already clear top end. Last things to consider is the pickup configuration, I love a standard 4 string single humbucker, its THE stingray sound and I dont need to vary it other than tweaks of the EQ. Good luck Dave
