1. For me I would love a pinned section for repairs and luthiers work. It would act as an easy reference guide for everyone when they have probs with their instrument and what to do about it - for us DB players thats a way of life .
2. ....maybe would be good to pin one specifically on equipment because thats common to all genres of music?
3. I used to sit quite high on a stool with an extended end pin out 9 / 10 inches and with left foot raised - a bit like a classical guitarist. Recently I modified this and I sit cello style with both feet on the ground and a short end pin of about 4 inch max extension ( very similar to Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Mayer as below). Took a bit of getting used to but very easy to get to all parts of the bass and bow all strings and not a hint of aching muscles or back. Works for me!
4. Heres the link http://basschat.co.uk/topic/209121-string-identifier/
5. Be great to get some photos on the string identifier thread?
6. Well...couldnt resist and I got some Bernadel ....first impressions are 10/10 ! Its a really 'clean' rosin - no claggy grip or powdery skid ...just right and quite simple to find the bow tension ( today anyway !). For £10 incl delivery can't go wrong!
7.
I could talk to Neil for you and see if he might give you a skype lesson?
I would love a Skype lesson with Neil ! I sense there might be a queue forming here!
8.
It's here in Falkirk.
bro?!! Glad it got to you - thanks to Dale for be patient and I guess to UPS for finally doing the business even though 'tracking' still only says 'a label has been printed" !!
9. Some really interesting textures - how does he play 3 ( 4) note chords like that ? !! Really into classically trained Lars Danielsson - came across this version of Suffering ( originally composed and played on DB but played here by the man himself on Cello ). 10.
do you have your gig details and anything you want saying on the map pin ?
I'll drop you a pm with some details
11. I have the bass after Falkirk and its available from 14th July onwards - I am in derbyshire between Bakewell and Buxton ....less than an hour from Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham, Derby ...anyone going to pick up the next leg ?
12. I don't think that there will be simply because the variations on each exercise can take at least an hour ( or more in some instances ) to get through ! The Art of the Bow springs to mind as a video technique resource ...I guess you could always post on here and see if anyone can help !
13. ...I think I need to get a copy of Sarah Quigleys book ( ...know of a cheap second hand one for sale ?! ) !
14. OK "Map of Honour" link now added !
15. ...i sense the badge of honour 'sig' getting longer !
16. The Tesco screecher was an obvious !! Picked out the full bodied Strad from the very nice sounding 18th C German which was just a bit brighter . These two were in a different league to the Tesco offering!
17. Unusual thing to post on here but I thought I would just share a musical gem amongst fellow musicians ! So, ...the orchestra has been looking for a new percussionist for a couple of months . We have been going through the final movement (iv) of Shostakovich's 7 Symphony which is known as the Leningrad Symphony . It was written literally whilst Hitler's army were being overthrown and the city retaken by the Russians. New drummer joined and the whole piece suddenly turned into something completely different with a brilliant musical idea . Listen to the last 3 minutes. Without sounding to pompous, the theme is very simple at 1:15:30 which then gets quite jazzed up with some beautiful chord structures sliding underneath building up to a great crescendo and the sense of lifting / liberation of the city ... we kind of all got that and fell in love with the music in previous rehearsals ...but then during the first rehearsal with the new drummer the conductor refers for the first time to 'implied gun fire, bombing and collapsing buildings' that apparently Shostakovich could hear as he was writing the music! - you can hear that with the timpanis ...but then for me the electric bit is 1:17:00 onwards, beautiful climactic melody but with the piercing snare drum ringing out as if they are 'house clearing' pistol fire ...in a small orchestra pit make you feel like you should be ducking for cover !. It is well worth listening on headphones to get the full effect but an absolute spine tingler of a piece to play knowing the backstory and the music captures this amazing sense of danger at the same time as joy. Genius! Anyways , hope others enjoy this as much as I do (what a difference one musician / part makes to the whole vibe and message of the piece)!
