Annoying sound - and not just my playing ( hopefully !)

When you hold down the F# is the buzzing coming above where you are stopping the string i.e. on the nut side or below where you are stopping the string i.e. the bridge side of the string? -

Thought i would just start a lighthearted 'caption' thread ....here are some images found on-line . The idea is to chip in with alternative captions and add new photos ! ( found these by Googling Double Bass + adding a word ! ). "...now just got to reach up and get that end pin extended!"

None specifically in the £100 price range ...but plenty of cheap options come up on the usual auction sites! You can get a reasonable bag for around £30 and I would invest in a properly sized second hand end pin wheel or even better a bass buggy - always best to have the bass in contact with the ground (have never really found backstraps that useful ...but a good way to have the bass 'break your fall' if you trip !!). From experience the padding is much of a muchness ( unless you double your budget! ), but one thing I would look out for is a gig bag that has loads of hand straps in different locations ( top, middle, bottom, front and back ) - just makes it easier to handle the instrument and pull it in and out of the back of a car, take up and down stairs, etc . Good luck with it !

Musicals are really fun and full of the 'narrative style' of music which makes its own unique demands on musicians. You have to really pay attention to what the actors are doing ...just as if they are fellow band members. The band underpins and heightens the drama ( obviously! ) and so you have to know everything about the musical - inside and out ....learning the dots if fine but not enough to carry off a good stage show! Be ready for anything - whilst you are in control of what you play , you are not in control of what happens on stage - such as an actor leaving out a huge chunk of lines and suddenly cutting to a different scene that you thought was about 5 minutes away ! Best way to make an impression at a show is to expect the unexpected and take it in your strid. Usually every show has something to talk about afterwards ( you can't control how much actors have or haven't rehearsed their lines , what they might have gotten up to to calm their nerves , whether there is a prop or set malfunction like a door not opening ....youve just got to be one of the cool guys in the band that saves the day! Good luck with it - great fun ! BTW are you in an orchestra pit or in a hall ?

Thanks for that ! ( ...I kind of deserved that didn't I ! ) Agreed, both are easy to lock into and groove along to. Interesting though that what I hear particularly in the second clip is 5 whole beats and a quaver tagged onto the end. For me thats the vibe of the music i.e. "1,2,3,4,5 & " ( the keyboard leads the way ) rather than counting 11 quick quavers in each bar . With the original PSP post I personally find that I can follow the groove really quickly feeling two easy bars of 4/4 with a 3/4 bar thrown in. For me much easier than counting 11/4 - I think as long as you feel the groove it probably doesn't matter how you do it !
2 bars of four, one bar of 3.
+1 on that .... keep it simple!! ..the pulse and vibe is over three bars . Simple as that. Behind the melody count and feel 4/4 first bar, 4/4 again in 2nd bar , then a bar of 3/4, ...much easier than thinking of the phrase and counting 11 beats ( I challenge anyone to get a groove counting 11s )! Really enjoyed listening to Pino - thanks for the post !

Bit of compressed silver foil to pack up the string is almost invisible and can work a treat as a zero budget repair. If you are handy, you could fit a new nut - pretty cheap to get a replacement under £20 ( http://www.contrabass.co.uk/ebony_fittings.htm plenty of other sources but heres one supplier ) Whats the purpose of reducing the string height at the nut ? ...for bringing the strings closer to the fingerboard its usually playing around with the bridge height that does the trick. Credit card is about as low as anyone would ever want to go at the nut and is not an absolute guide or a 'correct' or 'wrong' setting . Every instrument is different and if you get too low, the string will buzz against the fingerboard ( especially when playing arco ) ...so take it easy - you only have to get it wrong once !

Where abouts in the country are you based ( Wales perhaps!?) ?

I guess that if you are not spoilt for choice then you may have to travel - there are a couple of teachers I know of who do lessons on line using Skype - could that work for you?
