Sublime solo from the late, great Charlie Haden
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
languid, dinner party friendly fayre
Think I am going to have to stick with that, sorry. Fraid that Keith Jarrett piece left me cold. Different strokes and all that! -
Sublime solo from the late, great Charlie Haden
Clarky replied to Clarky's topic in EUB and Double Bass
As well as the wonderful 'Beyond the Missouri Sky' album with Pat Metheny (one of my desert island discs) I can wholeheartedly recommend the album "Nocturne", a Latin-influenced late night jazz album. Wonderfully melodic and with (as ever) the most tasteful and generally to the point/non-meandering solos from Charlie Haden https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTeVod4eH5k -
FYI, the seller is a BassChatter who has the username subsong (real name Mark). If it doesn't sell on eBay (4 hours to run and no bids yet) and you are interested in this bass I suggest you drop him a PM. I was considering the bass but finances do not allow

http://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&t=4m30s&v=3sxh-FXhFBU Solo starts at 4.30 but the whole piece is rather lovely. Spotted this on Geoffbassist's facebook page, thanks Geoff! Also interesting to me to see how far away from the end of the board he plays with his right hand (which in part explains his beautiful soft, non aggressive tone). Completely different from say Ray Brown who played right near the end of the board and was a lot more propulsive in his playing.

Hey Geoff, the David Gage website is quite easy to navigate with Gamut Lyon and Pistoy strings http://www.davidgage.com/store/index.php?cPath=40_56 PS, lovely sound mtroun. I have settled on gut D/G from a Pirastro Chorda 'Carlos Henriquez' set which are lovely. I pair them with Spiro Weich and there is a change in timbre between A and D but its not major and - to be frank - if matching Spiros and guts was good enough for the sadly-departed Charlie Haden, who am I to argue?

Another deal with Rory, this time he bought a 1963 Hofner bass from me. As before, pleasurable deal from start to finish

Strings for 1/2 size and action for soft hands!
Clarky replied to Telebass's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Hey Marc, your speaking/scale length is likely longer than the 38.75" of Telebass' 1/2 size bass so Silver Slaps would be even lower tension on the latter, possibly too low (becoming floppy). Super Silvers are the medium tension version of Silver Slaps and may be better suited in this instance. Thoughts anyone? My Kolstein travel bass has a c.39" speaking length and has very nice action with Kolstein Heritage strings on - steels with a very slightly old school gutty sound. After you have paid import/shipping they are about £120 http://www.gollihurmusic.com/product/2304-KOLSTEIN_HERITAGE_UPRIGHT_BASS_STRINGS.html Alternatively Spiro Weich worked well on my Kolstein -

I am also a member of TalkBass but only subscribe to the DB forums. Like Roger/bassace says, there's a pretty good community there with some very useful advice (the leading edge amplification technology for DBs, eg, FearFul and MAS stuff pretty much all comes from the US) and it also widens the net for buying/selling DB gear (as the number of active DB'ers on BassChat, while growing nicely, is still not that large). I steer clear of the electric bass forums so I wouldn't know if they are as rabid as the Rick and Ernie Ball forums (allegedly) are

I know I have said it before but I honestly think I have finally found my string nirvana (Spiro Weich EA and gut DG) Hence am moving on this lovely set of strings which is very nearly as nice as the aforementioned Its a combination of Garbo Light EAD and a Garbo Gut G. All are in very good condition with no breaks/kinks/unwinding - the Lights are probably 2 months old and the Gut G is just 2 weeks old New would cost you well over £200 at Thomann or Bassico when in stock (eg, Thomann is charging £227 plus post for a Garbo Light set). I will sell for £140 posted and consider that an absolute bargain given the quality and condition. So roll up for a very low tension, gut sounding and feeling set

The end of the line for the Innovation subforum
Clarky replied to daflewis's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I didn't actually get to try any Innovation strings from the samples going around but I would like to add my name to the list of those who think you did a great job of spreading the word and providing good advice -
KK are very high quality copies of the Ampeg Baby Bass from the 1960s and this is a nice discount from new price and means no waiting time. Customer service from Kris Kedzior (the West London-based manufacturer) is excellent too. Someone grab this quick (I already have an Ampeg BB before you ask why I don't just snaffle it myself .... )

"Give us the ******* money." Please.

Tenner sent Ralph as you were so kind as to attend an All The Queens Ravens gig without laughing at my bass playing -

I bought this only a few weeks ago from BCer guybrush threepwood (aka Craig) who had previously bought it from BC's Owen. After the initial burst of enthusiasm I very quickly discovered that I simply do not enjoy playing short scale basses with medium/high action, however beautiful and retro they may look. It sounds lovely and thumpy but I just don't like the experience of playing it compared with my Jazz bass. Best pics and description are on the previous FS thread and here's a tasty pic Craig took (hope thats OK, Craig?) http://basschat.co.u...r-senator-sold/ Am asking same price £400 plus post. Also happy to hand over in London. I would also consider p/x against a US or Japan Fender Precision in sunburst/rosewood neck or oly white/rosewood or maple neck (no other trade offers and no MIM Fenders thanks, sorry but I am a gear snob!)
