1. In which case I would recommend an Acoustic Image Ten 2 combo as best sounding with DB and very clean with electric bass (you may need to put a Sansamp type pedal in front if you want a warmer, more overdriven sound). Not cheap though. A decent 'budget' option is a MarkBass cmd121p with a good preamp in front when using for DB An alternative that I haven't tried but suspect may be quite good for 'doubling' is AER Amp One
2. Haven't you got a Tecamp Puma head? Just add a Crazy 8 cab and buy a padded cajon bag and you will have a small neat modular, highly transportable rig. Get.a bigger cab for when playing electric bass only. If you have to go combo route I prefer Acoustic Image to Phil Jones as AI has the useful extra features for DB including the high pass filter and phase switch. Both are good though. Not tried Barabass but it looks retro cool! If you don't end up with a head or combo with high pass and phase, I highly recommend getting an fdeck pedal to put in front
3. Simon bought some double bass strings off me and all was good. Recommended!
4. Jens is always experimenting with finishes as you know. Just sent me a Paperback Ritter
5. Not in Ealing but only a couple of miles away - in case you don't find anyone closer - Chandlers in Kew http://www.chandlerguitars.co.uk/
6. On Monday night I will be playing upright bass for the UmbrellaBirds, a London-based Americana collective, at the Canadian Thanksgiving evening at the historic Rose Playhouse in London (the Tudor theatre and oldest on the South Bank in London) Any Canadian BCers or any fans of country/acoustic music please come along! We will playing songs by Neil Young, Be Good Tanyas, The Band, Dave Rawlings Machine, Gillian Welch, Glen Campbell (yes, my favourite song of all time, Wichita Lineman) and others
7. Zellers are fab DBs. Good score that man
8. Cut to £90 posted, saving you £50 (and losing me the same amount ) These are very fat slapper-oriented strings (not for fat slappers, you understand) and are completely different to steels, so they are a bit specialist. The extra-fat A string has a sort of gummy residue on it which the company assures me is part of the manufacturing process and quickly rubs off (or can be removed immediately, if so desired, with oil, eg salad oil and a towel). They are just a bit too alien for me
9.
There is certainly a lot of love for the Full Circle and the 15 mins that it was on my bass was very promising. But it crapped out as soon as I started the gig and, like Clarky, I've got my doubts about the flimsy wiring. There are several reliability issues on the 'other' forum; it's just not up to Fishman's usual quality. So I won't use it. Clarky, I hope you'll be happy with the Lifeline; I blend mine with an Underwood and get great results. It's only an extra lead.
Thanks Roger, for the avoidance of doubt, I have never had a problem with the Full Circle in a live setting but I fear the thin wire will get bashed, especially as I often play in pretty small pubs/venues. That said, in the 3 years I have had this bass it hasn't happened yet. But I just feel that there are more robust designs available and - with the rave reviews for the Lifeline - I want to give it a go
10.
Are you going for that new one that slots in the adjuster?
Yep, the Realist Lifeline, which is getting great reviews Peter/Keith, I think the FC sounds great but I don't like the design (with the thin protruding wire), hence I have a Lifeline on order. If it doesn't work out, I still have an Underwood on my Kolstein bass I can switch over in an emergency
11. Man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Just from my experience, I went 20 years without playing bass properly (arguably I still can't!) through work/kids etc but always had one stowed under the bed for when I fancied picking out a nice bass line or two. My advice would be to keep one bass secreted away just in case .... Best of luck whatever you choose to do
12. I have removed the Fishman Full Circle from my 3/4 bass as I want to try a different pickup (the new Gage realist) and am hence moving it on. In full working condition but one small drawback - I have mislaid the other 1/4" aluminium adjuster wheel (as in the one without the piezo unit). These can be bought in pairs from luthier Martyn Bailey for c£25 http://www.mjbl.co.u...usters-for-sale and with a bit of googling maybe a cheaper individual adjuster wheel would come up? Given this slight extra compliction I will sell (including post) at the decent price of £85 posted - bear in mind, these are roughly £200 new including post at Thomann http://www.thomann.d...full_circle.htm Technical stuff: http://www.fishman.c...t-bass-pickup-1
13. During the course of having my bass repaired by my luthier last week, he put on a brand new set of the recently-released white nylon La Bella 7710 strings, which were co-designed by Ron Carter. In a fit of enthusiasm I decided to keep them on the bass and bought them from him for a more-than-fair £80 (they are not available yet in Europe, as far as I can see, but retail at $148 in the US - which would mean an imported cost of c£120-odd) http://www.gollihurm...SS_STRINGS.html. While they have a wonderful soft feel under the fingers, having had them on my bass a few days I have decided they are slightly too bright for me (I prefer 'old school' 1950s tone) and have gone back to my old faithfuls (Velvet Blues). Thus, virtually unused and not-yet-available in UK and I will pass on at the same great price - £80 including post La Bella product page: http://www.labella.com/products/7710t/
14.
I'm a complete newbie who recently acquired a Stagg EUB, and I was wondering if you thought the gut-a-like would product interesting results on a piezo EUB. I am playing mainly in an acoustic project, currently doing covers of pop and blues songs - no bowing or upper range soloing
ho there, I don't think these would suit a Stagg tbh. These are mainly designed for slapping and are über chunky. I would drop a pm to stingray Pete to ask about best strings for s Stagg as I think it's scale length doesn't work with some strings
15. The seller hasn't been on BC since 3rd September, over a month. Just sayin'
16. Last one tomorrow (Saturday)! If you wanted to see All The Queens Ravens and live in London, best come along as there won't be a gig with a drummer for at least a year and the band may go 'on ice' between times
17. here's a stock pic which gives some idea of the fatness of Gut-a-like Deluxe strings
18. Honest answer is no. In the incredibly short time before my bridge collapsed (causing bridge foot to fly into my eye, rupturing blood vessel!) my impression is that they were like better quality Cordes Lamberts rather than guts. Rabbie on basschat has used these and prefers them to Lamberts although he says neither are exactly like guts
19. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGyrGTuMhzo&list=UUh3BbC85YARDmHksD4nnmNA re maple vs rosewood, Guitarbank's Jazz bass comparison video reveals the difference again - I am guessing its inherent in the different wood types
20. Gut-a-like deluxe strings After my recent gout-in-left-hand scare I thought I would try out some Gut-a-likes for low tension, relatively loud acoustic volume work in my bluegrass side project. As I was tweaking the A string after installing, my DB bridge collapsed (doh!) so I took them off again. However, in the brief period in which I tried them I immediately decided I couldn't cope with the big diameter of the E and A strings (E is copperwound, A is more like the D and G but very thick, like an earthworm!) I paid £140 from Thomann for them http://www.thomann.d...ass_strings.htm These have less than an hour of play on the D/G and minutes only on the E/A £100 posted, absolute barg if you are slapper or like earthy/roots type DB [s]Velvet Blues SOLD I like these strings a lot but have two sets and only need one. This set came in a trade for some other strings and is in good condition but the bright copper has tarnished to dark brown. This can easily be restored with a wet rag and toothpaste (Velvet's advice!) so they are shiney looking, if that matters to you (the tone doesn't change). They are £140 at Thomann including post, will sell for £75 posted[/s]
