1.
Looks a bit rubbish though that bass.
I think it has a certain WIthnail & I type charm and I wouldn't cack myself gigging it, whereas I would with a shiny new several-£k luthier bass!
2.
Given the number and variety of repairs, that would definitely have to be try before you buy! Doesn't look as if the end-pin extends, does it? At 69" tall overall, that would only work for a very short bass player.
True but I believe unconverted 3-string DBs are rare as hen's teeth. Re: endpin, could always get one from Ben Bastin on BC
3. To revive this thread, I recently re-acquired a set of Olivs I had sold on to another BCer as I missed their warm, rich sound. Fitted them and the next day the metal windings on the G string had unravelled around the C position. The strings hadn't even been fitted since I sold them on first time so was very irritating. The string was useless (the unwound metal wire is very sharp and potentially finger-shredding) and so I threw it away and had to fork out £80-odd for a new replacement. In the US, Gamut do a rewinding service (for $55/£30-odd) for wrapped guts that have unwound, wish Pirastro offered the same!
4. Bit battered but very cool IMHO http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PRE-1900-CARVED-3-STRING-GERMAN-MITTENWALD-DOUBLE-BASS-MAPLE-SPRUCE-BLUEGRASS-/181429312449?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Sting_Instruments&hash=item2a3e079bc1
5.
You're selling this to get a bass back that you regret letting go. Can you not see that the cycle will simply continue?!
To be fair, IIRC Mark/discreet owned that Precision from new in 1976 and played it in Pigbag back in the 1980s. I think that counts as a lot of memories!
6. I do agree with Rabbie. Your Fishman Plat Pro should sort any feedback issues - unless you are a mega-loud psychobilly band! - with its phase switch, high pass filter and para EQ. If it doesn't manage it then I would recommend getting an fdeck pedal (there's a thread about a UK manufactured clone I posted in this forum) as this has a broader sweeping high pass filter than a Fishman (plus a phase switch) which many TalkBass DB'ers (and some on BassChat) recommend highly. As for the Schaller, most reviews say they are quite fretless bass or EUB sounding - which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just not very acoustic-y sounding.
7. Dave bought a v nice set of double bass strings off me. Faultless transaction. Cheers Dave!
8. Our drummer is going off travelling for a year in October and we will most likely just do a handful of drummer-less five-piece gigs while he is away (one of our singers has moved to Bristol too, making coordination a bit more complicated!) We have two gigs lined up at the very start of October which will therefore be our last with the current line-up for some considerable time. So if you wanted to catch us live, now's your chance! They are: Thursday 2nd October - at Paper Dress Vintage, a funky bohemian clothes shop in Shoreditch Saturday 4th October - at Spice of Life on Charing Cross Road, next to Soho Here we are playing at Spice of Life earlier this year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0noHL4khCeM
9. Lightly used (1 month) Velvet Garbo E, A, light Garbo D plus Lenzner plain gut G New would cost Euro 250/£215 from Germany. Yours for £135 posted
10.
I had a similar problem on my JB. All the earths were intact, so my solution was to paint over the top pole piece with clear nail varnish.
What happens if I only have red glitter nail varnish?
11. Cheers Howie and Mr Beer! Time to get soldering kit out (a scary prospect!)
12. Aha, so the tone pot should be connected to the ground wire from the bridge. Well, my Jazz is a 62 reissue and the copper wire strip that emerges from under the bridge pickup and goes to the bridge has come loose. This may be the answer
13. Thanks I will take a look, although I am to electronics what Kim Kardashian is to nuclear physics
14. Hi all, I have an old Squier JV Jazz which sounds lovely - until I touch the pole pieces on the neck pickup with my thumb (which happens easily enough as I rest my thumb in that general vicinity) and an annoying buzz is emmitted. The buzz completely disappears if I wind the tone pot all the way to the bass side. As I graduate the pot back towards the treble side the buzz gets progressively louder. I know Jazzes have a hum when the pickups are not matched for volume but this is different, it seems to be to do with the tone pot. Is this normal folks? Thanks in advance
15. About time we had a porn thread for everyone's double basses. So to get the ball rolling, here is my 1880's German flatback, complete with Full Circle pickup, Ben Bastin wooden endpin and Velvet Garbo gut string set (normal Garbo E/A, Garbo light D, Lenzner gut G)
16. Beautiful and the soundcloud sample sounds stunning. Lucky man!
17. Alan just sent me a lovely EA Wizzy cab. He could not have packed it more professionally and in such a way as it could withstand a nuclear holocaust or even a nasty nip from Luis Suarez' nashers. Excellent deal from start to fnish. Highly recommended
18. Andy bought a DB pickup off me. All was good
19. Letts Basses are very active on FaceBook (posted some pics only last night). I would contact them there first as they may be prepared to rectify the problems. Starting a wider discussion on QC issues to be frank may end up with you doing yourself out of a mutually acceptable solution. Good luck either way! 20.
I really like the sound of one particular note on the C string and only ever play that note. It is my gig so no-one complains but I never get booked anywhere else.
So you just play the opening riff to 'Watcher of the Skies' on C for the entire gig?
21. Stuart bought a Markbass combo from me. He was very friendly throughout, even when the courier didn't turn up to collect on the allotted day ( ), and paid superfast. Excellent transaction as others before me have noted. Enjoy the combo matey!
22. Either Ceremony by New Order or Damaged Goods by Gang of Four in my first band in 1981 (ish)
