1. To be upfront, the silks at the ball end do sit on the bridge saddles but this didn't seem to affect the amplified tone (which was the only thing I was happy with). In my usual fit of over-enthusiasm I also ordered from the US a Gibson bridge Mod-Bar (which means the silks don't sit on the saddles and improves intonation etc from the famously ropey 3-point bridge). I will be selling this as soon as it arrives Mod-Bar http://www.ebay.com/itm/GIBSON-EPIPHONE-BASS-BRIDGE-3-POINT-MOD-BAR-/291089250974?
2. Ina fit of GAS I ordered a Gibson SG bass which arrived yesterday and I ordered a set of Pyramid Gold short scale flats to go on it (as a couple of TalkBass threads said they were the best flats for this bass) Well the bass has QC issues (dodgy fretting, buzz under pickup, gnarled rosewood by the nut) and is going back and I will be seeking a refund rather than replacement as I am pretty disappointed with it Selling these flats as a consequence. Will set you back £40 inc post from Thomann or £50 from Stringsdirect. Yours for £35 posted
3. Andy bought a DB pickup from me and was very patient when the Royal Mail obviously dropped the package in a puddle so that the address became unreadable and they had to send it back to me to re-post/address! Cheers Andy!
4. Wow, that is stunning and - as you say - poles apart from the other main bass in your sig On a related note, the modern take on this (Gibson SG bass) seems to be really good value (£599 for the 2014 'Special' or the faded cherry version at Dawsons) given its US-made. Got me thinking ....
5. Thanks everyone. Unfortunately we didn't win (Spiral Earth have only announced the winners with no order, best debut went to Barrule). Was nice to be nominated though and I appreciate everyone taking the time to vote Dodge Brothers did win their category though (best Blues album)
6. I sold my Low B2 as I have a weak shoulder/back and wanted an ultralight cab. Sound-wise it was probably the best cab I ever owned
7. Here is where all the tortoiseshell has gone http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Custom-Fender-Precision-Bass-1979-USA-Olympic-White-Hard-case-P-X-Jazz-/181339280962?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2a38a9d642
8. here's the specs if it helps http://www.acmebass.com/pdf/b2.pdf In my experience the more juice you put into Acme cabs the better. Very hi-fi sounding. Amazing for double bass and supposedly really good with low B strings on electric 5'ers
9. Mal bought some DB strings off me. Very simple transaction, quick comms and payment and friendly throughout
10. AFAIK thats the standard plate on a passive Pro bass
11. Didn't actually buy anything off Keith (this time!) but just wanted to pass on how helpful this splendid chap is. I was after a double bass preamp and he lent me one, no questions asked, no postage charged, to help me through a rehearsal and gig. In the event the preamp saved my bacon as otherwise I would have suffered uncontrollable feedback Top bloke!
12. This looks in near immaculate condition and is apparently the only one of its kind with walnut body and birds-eye facing (don't think its active though as i understood these basses were passive only). Bit pricey but I guess it reflects the foregoing uniqueness/condition and I don't doubt someone will pay up for this http://www.thebassgallery.com/product_details.cfm?ID=2798&type=Bass%20Guitar
13. Best bet is to listen to Youtube clips or this fabulous string comparing matrix http://www.hervejeanne.de/saitenmatrix.php In short, steels have more definition, growl and sustain and take lower action - guts have a warmer, thumpier more old-school quality and generally are very low tension (requiring higher action). Guts also tend to go out of tune (especially if humidity or temperature changes) and require more care/attention (oiling, clipping off hairs that form with repeated playing). There are huge advocates of each. Velvet strings are a sort of half-way house (copper wound, dark-sounding, low tension) and there are several good brands of gut-alike hybrid strings (eg, Innovation) which have many of the qualities of gut but are easier to maintain
14. I can just about see scratches on the black area below the neck pickup but they look pretty minor to me and I bet can be quickly solved by any competent luthier at minimal cost if they continue to bother you (wouldn't worry me TBH; would probably make me happier to gig such an expensive bass!). That apart it looks to be in pretty stunning condition. Barrie/molan probably knows more about Foderas than the rest of this forum put together and I would listen to his advice about capturing the tonal possibilities - you may find you fall in love with what that P pickup can do (especially in combination with the J) and then its the best of all worlds - no extra costs on routing and no permanent diminution in re-sale value (which routing would almost certainly entail)
15. On Friday, I just used an fdeck HPF-Pre into the house DI box and a cr@ppy bass combo and it sounded great. The fdeck is a smart little device that buffers, gives you a phase switch (which saved my bacon at the gig as it was feedback city otherwise), and a high-pass filter that takes out boominess. Maybe worth getting hold of one of these as it doesn't have EQ and doesn't colour the sound but it does give feedback/boom fighting properties that your LM amp wouldn't have. You can't buy an fdeck in the UK but as it happens there is a UK effects manufacturer (4114) that is making me a clone of the pedal for about £70 (I have a BC thread about this)
16. Agreed with Bilbo, I have used a Fishman PlatPro into the front of a MiniCMD121P combo in the past very successfully. Happen to have a Headway EDB2 preamp these days, rather than PlatPro, but there's not a lot in it (more knobs on the Headway for greater feedback control)
17. Thanks BassTractor! Last reminder as voting closes 5th March Pretty please, I will feed my cats (Stanley and Snoop Catt) extra tuna if you vote for us
18. I really like these strings on my 3/4 DB and bought a set to try on my Kolstein Busetto travel bass. They were on the bass for a couple of weeks only and only had a few hours home use, basically they are in 99% condition. Reason for selling? Barrie Kolstein sent me a new set of Kolstein Heritage strings for my bass as a gesture since the ones that were on the bass when I bought it had a fault. Well the Heritage strings suit the bass better than the deeper/darker sounding Blues and so I am moving the latter on. These are £130-odd from Thomann so £85 posted is a barg - they look immaculate (none of the common tarnishing of the copper windings you get on used Velvet strings) and are very, very lightly used indeed Thomann link: http://www.thomann.d...ass_strings.htm
