1. Hi there, I had it paired with an Epifani UL112 for gigs or a Crazy8 (custom 1x8) cab for rehearsals and very small gigs. No reason why it couldn't be paired with any quality cab though.
2. Wow, that guy can play and what a collection. Although I don't like the look particularly the Adamovic was the stand-out soundwise for me and the Toby Chennell Arco acoustic bass the most GAS-inducing
3. Sounds great, wish I could have been there. Predictably, Mrs C had "thing's planned" last night. Keep us in touch with your next few London gigs, Lozz, and I will endeavour to make the next one
4. I recently picked up Oliv D and G strings from Laurence (Blackadder) and am really enjoying their fabulously tactile feel and the G in particular sings beautifully. I have paired them with Spiro Mittel E/A and this does work pretty well, although there is a distinct tonal change between them. I have read up plenty on Oliv E and A strings about how they are dull and thuddy but would nonetheless like to give them a go. So if anyone has a good condition spare Oliv E and A (without unwinding issues or breaks) please drop me a PM.
5. Saturday bump with reminder that near offers will be considered
6. Glad HJB is back, Keith!
7. Bought some Oliv strings off Laurence. All good, very happy. Cheers mate!
8. I'm not rising to the bait, Keith And Beedster, it was better than bothering sheep
9. The second encore 'Mind you care' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0dtB-UAdCQ
10. Fantastic gig tonight. Danny still has all the chops. He was playing Victoria, his famous double bass and 'other half'. For the gear-stalkers among us (OK me), he appeared to be going direct into PA using an Underwood pickup (I think, it had two wings) and presumably a preamp I couldn't see. Victoria was strung with his signature strings from A to G but I noticed he had a Spiro Mittel 'E' (red silks at each end).
11. Break a leg Keith! Metaphorically of course ... But not a string :5
12.
Sorry cant make it , minor emergency at home
Thats a shame, hope home front OK. Oh and PTB apologies for typing fast in an earlier post and calling you Pete! Of course its Paul (The Bassist)
13. See you there! I will be attending along with my band's mandolin player and I think Thunderbird13 (Al) is also coming along. I have a heavy day at work so will probably not get there until 8.30pm
14. Been a couple of weeks type bump - £375 posted UK, £365 collected, £390 posted mainland Europe
15. I have always assumed its because laminated wood is less resonant than carved wood. Feedback is all about turning the body of the bass into a giant vibrating microphone and the less it vibrates the less the feedback
16. also PM'd regarding good condition D and one G
17. Only just spotted this Lozz. If I can make it, I will. Only thing is Mrs C may have something already planned for the evening. Will let you know
18. The good lady C is (ahem) possibly a touch older than me and so I was not allowed to wallow in it. My response - eat and drink enough to sink a small battleship in a beautiful sunny corner of Italy. So no it didn't hurt!
19. Happy b'day Bilbo, it was indeed a good one!
20.
It is too simplistic to say, as Artisan did, that if you're going to amplify the bass it makes very little difference what it's made of.
But Roger, I can make any double bass sound rubbish, amplified or not
21. [sub]More seriously, I assume its the fact that Western popular music has evolved around dance and rhythmic forms whereas much 'traditional' Asian music (and i have some Indonesian gamelan music and japanese music in my collection) has less rigid rhythms and where rhythm was needed it has been provided by drums? A list of Chinese instruments on Wiki lists just one bowed instrument with a bass string: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_traditional_Chinese_musical_instruments[/sub]
22. don't know what you mean? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pd2pSLFjOas
23. Obviously for rockabilly you don't want the action ultra-low or you can't slap properly. But there's a happy medium and the trick here is probably to make sure that whatever bass you order has an adjustable bridge so you can set the playing style that suits you best. Plenty of jazzers also slap. Check this utterly wonderful vid by the late Milt Hinton http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=iFTqVHEJZ0A
