1. I just did this for a set of DB strings on BassChat. I offered to refund before receipt of strings, even though they did not appear to be faulty when I sent them on. I think this community thrives on trust and that is my guiding principle (as long as the other party isn't a random joiner with no posts and no feedback)
2. Don't be scared about using gentle force - I use my thumb to gently force the bridge back into position. The tension of the strings (60 pounds plus with Spiros) is such that, unless you are extremely clumsy, it won't suddenly flip over and collapse on you. Its quite easy to move the bridge 1cm or so gradually with no risk at all, in my view. Just be patient and brave!
3. Just brilliant, the energy of the man and sidekick Warren Ellis is staggering. Entry fee alone was justified by the most stunning version of 'Jubilee Street' with a crashing 90mph, wall-of-noise finale Catch him on this tour if you can
4. Given the sad news of Lou Reed's untimely demise, I saw this on another forum and thought I'd post up. Its Herbie Flowers talking through his creation of the bass line. Interesting stuff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XBXUP5GqYJs
5.
[s]Hats[/s] Berets off.
Corrected
6. Nice one Nige and crew! As others have expressed, its a crying shame you weren't in the vid. It needs more flared leather trousers
7. Brief window with internet - strings are sold
8. I'm really not sure which night to choose. Darryl Scott is a fab singer but I saw him in JUly with DT so it makes sense to see someone different. Currently torn between Martin Simpson and Richard Thompson
9. I SO wish I could be there tonight Ad and Lozz but will be out of 'that London' wearing a tweed waistcoat, with strange facial hair, attending a bluegrass course
10. deets here https://www.facebook...irthdaySessions Now which one do I attend, hmmm
11. I bet there's still a spare place on DB course Jack if you are seriously interested but would have to be quick, as its starts Friday late afternoon
12. I only signed up last weekend. And its next weekend But I hate you anyway
13.
I am not attending but have been in the past a couple of times and had so much fun. Met some amazing musicians and would recommend highly. Its hard work and the late night jams are a real blast. Have fun Clarkie, I am very jealous.
Cheers! Looking forward but also a bit trepidatious as I know zip all theory and not that much more about bluegrass (although my band plays several blugrass-type songs)
14. No probs Adrian. These really are for those looking for a 'Gut lite' approach to gut strings!
15. Hi there, string tension is 47-62 pounds (G-to-E), whereas Spiro Weichs are 62-67 pounds, so they are even lower tension - link here http://baen.tamu.edu...assStrings.html Feel wise they are chalk and cheese as Spiro Weichs are relatively slim steels, whereas these are fat chunky gut-alikes. Bottom line: If you want to emulate an old school gut sound these are a stress-free (stable tuning) and maintenance-free (no clipping hairs or oiling)alternative. If you want precision and growl, I would stick with Spiros. Hope that helps!
16.
How do you arrive at an eBay name of "Grave Of The Fireflies" anyway?
Must be a fantasy games and books enthusiast Anyway its better than "Nest of the bedbugs"
17. I wasn't aware your lot ever left the 70s, Jack
18. But seriously to be absolutely bang on, I do need to start the note fractionally ahead of where my head tells me to in the more propulsive parts ... and it is because of the slower attack profile of double bass notes
19. In my case its because I can't keep a beat
20. I am down to two basses from - at one stage - about six or seven. If my Jazz sells, I will be down to one. I agree, the more distractions from actually playing and practicing the less likely you are to progress
21. Looks like it's up for sale at Bass Direct now http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Wal_MKII_5_string.html
22. I would love to have one of these to noodle on - an Alembic Brown Bass which are $7k+ new and so out of sensible reach
23. Hmmm, Laurence is very talented (he did some great work for me on the neck of a bass) but he is a one-man outfit and at least when I visited he seemed to have quite a lot on. Also his workshop is tucked away in a corner of Clapham which is would be pretty hard to get to without a car (and very pricey with a taxi from central London). Aren't the much more convenient bigger outfit the Martins a better option in your circumstances?
24.
That's where you went wrong, Clarky. Packages with 'Fragile' stickers on them get singled out for 'special treatment'.
If you read Lord of the Rings, you would know "Fragile - musical instrument" translates in Orc-ish to "Kick sh*it out of this, by order of Mordor"
