1. I bought these a week ago from Bassico in Germany (Thomann, the usual supplier, is out of stock). Cost me about £105 including post. These are excellent gut-alike strings (similar to Innovation Silver Slaps) which I bought as the lighter-gauge Ultralight set suit my Ampeg Baby Bass very well indeed. Unfortunately they don't suit my 3/4 1880s bass as well (its a bit too dark sounding), so I am sticking with brighter sounding Velvet Blues and Spiros as my two sets of strings for that particular bass (the choice depending on whether I am in an old school or growly mood). They have been on my bass for three days and are in essentially mint condition. I'll knock £30 off new price, so thats £75 posted in UK. Here's the specs http://www.kontrabas...e/saiten_e.html And a video (not me)
2. A few more
3. Thanks Rick and Loz! Here are some more of James' pics (hope thats OK James?). I can take some in daylight in next couple of days but its dark now Edit: I originally wrote that it had a 3-bolt neck which was obviously incorrect and also said it was 9.5 pounds, just weighed it and its actually 9.3 pounds- OP fixed
4. I bought this five months ago from BC'er James and its truly a thing of beauty. The classic colour scheme (to my mind) with four-bolt neck and parts dating to 1974 and 1975. Other than a 2cm ding under the lower horn (not visible front on), some fairly-inevitable buckle rash and a bit of surface abrasion in the picking area, its in lovely condition. Has low slick action and is all-original (I fitted a nicer patterned tort guard from Bass_Doc but have the original still; also have teh chrome covers). Weighs 9.3 pounds and comes in a Protection racket semi-hard case. To whet your appetite here are a couple of James' old pics that he sent me when I was in the process of buying. Better ones to follow I'm after £[s]2,200[/s] £2,100(no trades, sorry) and would prefer London pick-up/handover [s]as I don't currently have a box or packing materials[/s] but can post
5. Me again! This time a trade for Jas' luverly light Mike Lull P bass. All good, but then you knew that already
6.
a la Clarky ( actually gender fail; should it be aux Clarky?)
Depends on my mood and on what clothes Mrs C has left lying around
7. re VT Bass, I am not sure although I know some DB'ers use the Sansamp Para Driver so must be a good chance it works
8.
You could do that (shave it). I didn't as its very thin and made no appreciable difference to playability. Re: preamp, I'm not sure as at that time I had a piezo-friendly amp (Acoustic Image). I guess a simple tuning pedal in the chain might buffer it if it sounded piezo/nasal through your amp?
9. On hold for a couple of days for a BC'er to do some research into these
10. Its perfectly fine to use a shim, be it a thin piece of card or paper. All you need to do is ensure the element is solidly seated in the bridge wing, the vibration of the strings does the rest sound-wise
11. Bump with a cheeky £25 price drop to £525
12. I owned the 4string version of this bass (with rare dalbergia negra board) and it was an absolute delight with an amazingly flexible preamp. Only sold it as I was obsessed about getting a year of birth Fender. Good job for my bank account that I don't play 5'ers!
13. My word that is beautiful
14. check out this old thread. I had the same bass and used a K&K floating bridge pickup. Only thing is it was prone to feedback at higher volume. Sounded great at low volume though http://basschat.co.uk/topic/200373-best-pickup-for-acoustic-no-double-bass/page__p__1989351__hl__k__fromsearch__1#entry1989351
15. No chance. More than 10 available
16. Carrying on the Alembic theme, I fancy a Brown bass or Stanley Clarke ... but would have to weigh under 10 pounds given my dodgy back
17. here's a pic to show the excellent condition of these strings
18.
Where is the bass located please?
Andy's profile says he's in Norwich
19. Sorry Chris, I am well sorted for rigs (got 3 already, one of which is only not for sale as our band's guitarist uses it.... )
20. I have just had an offer to trade my Breedlove for a really beautiful Fender P but unfortunately the other bass is too heavy for my glass back. So just to clarify, I really can't cope with anything above 9.5 pounds in weight if anyone is thinking of a trade offer.
21. Reminds me of my all-time favourite double bass video with that wonderful old gent Milt Hinton. Which gives me an excuse to post it again! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFTqVHEJZ0A
22. Much as I love the sound and feel of these premier steel-wound gut strings, I have decided to move on my Oliv A/D/G strings. By way of background I bought the D/G off BassChat in used but excellent condition from Laurence Bassadder (there's no breaks at all in windings, silks are in vgc). I bought the A brand new from StringZone about a month ago and it matches really well and has decent sustain on my bass ... despite some of the naysayers who only recommend the D/G. Together they cost me £170. I would sell them as a package for £150 posted. Would be £270 new from thestringzone.co.uk, so this is a serious (£120/c.40%) saving http://www.thestring...categories/oliv PS, Why sell you ask? Simply that I would prefer more stable tuning. I only get to play 30 minutes max a day and often just a couple of minutes on weekdays, when not rehearsing/gigging with my band, so a more stable non-gut set would suit me better. Basically I am lazy! If I were a full-time player or had more time to practice it would be different. Also if I were an arco player (these are known to be excellent for arco) it would be different. Instead, I have put on a set of Velvet Blues on my 3/4 flatback and I have a set of Presto Nylonwound Lights as a backup set. These do gut-sounding pretty well (not as nice as the Olivs, obviously) but are much more stable tuning-wise. PPS, obviously you would need to match with an E, but the Oliv E is renowned as being largely thud, which is why I used a Spirocore Mittel E.
