I have always assumed its because laminated wood is less resonant than carved wood. Feedback is all about turning the body of the bass into a giant vibrating microphone and the less it vibrates the less the feedback

The good lady C is (ahem) possibly a touch older than me and so I was not allowed to wallow in it. My response - eat and drink enough to sink a small battleship in a beautiful sunny corner of Italy. So no it didn't hurt!

[sub]More seriously, I assume its the fact that Western popular music has evolved around dance and rhythmic forms whereas much 'traditional' Asian music (and i have some Indonesian gamelan music and japanese music in my collection) has less rigid rhythms and where rhythm was needed it has been provided by drums? Obviously for rockabilly you don't want the action ultra-low or you can't slap properly. But there's a happy medium and the trick here is probably to make sure that whatever bass you order has an adjustable bridge so you can set the playing style that suits you best.
