2. Cheers again. Just back from day trip to San Gimignano, a fantastic hilltop village with stunning views and even better wine. Lovely day, ta PS, no birthday bass, in answer to an earlier question as (believe it or not - and this is bad for the BC for sale turnover) I am happy with what I have (shock, horror, gasps etc)
3. Thanks all! I decided the best way to celebrate a milestone I was trepidatious about was to eat and drink in the sun, so I send best wishes to all from Siena The wise Mrs C said to me, as I whinged about the imminence of 50 last night, "well the alternative is a lot worse"! Any how logging off now for more Bacchnaalian excess
4. My band just used Discwizards. 1,000 top-quality jewel cased CDs with gatefold art and poly wrapping cost about £790-ish inc VAT. Took about two weeks, very pleased
5.
Will try and make that one Clarky, seeing as the album launch was so good.
Good stuff Lozz, in all honesty I think this will be a rather more low-key/quiet gig as we pulled in a few favours from mates to get some of the crowd for the album launch, so don't feel under any obligation mate! Unless of course you can't wait to see us play live again, in which case we'd be delighted to see you
6.
My pleasure mate. It's a very, very good album!
Cheers Nige! If anyone fancies a free listen, here's the link to 'Hearts for Judas' on Spotify https://play.spotify.com/artist/0IUawLEHC2kB41H3NDQNYm
7. There's a JV for sale on BC at £850 (rosewood board though) and another recently went to tredders for a knowdown £500 (admittedly the lowest price I've seen one go for) so £999 seems a bit rich to me. If I were to offer I would pitch a lot below that
8. Wow! Thanks for taking the time Nige to give a really proper review and I am delighted you like the album. I do think we have a (tautology alert!) pretty unique vibe and the combination of the two amazing front ladies and the acoustic backing is what makes us memorable (its why I was so keen to join them in the first place, having watched them playing a bass-free gig and been blown away). I would love to say I played on every song of the album but the reality is quite a few were recorded before I had joined either with the previous DB player or with a friend of the band who also plays DB (the lady bassist you saw with our support act, Travellin Rose, at the gig last week). I am really pleased to have played on Las Vegas Parano and New York Red in particular, though Thanks again Nige! PS, for those reading, Nige also lent us his Spanish guitar for Las Vegas Parano so his influence is on our album too
9. Hey, many thanks Sam! We're very proud of the album
10. After a cracking album launch gig at the Underbelly, next up is a headline set at The Finsbury, next to Finsbury Park, Manor House, London. We are headlining, onstage at about 10.15pm Gig listing here, complete with several year-old photo from before I joined http://www.thefinsbury.co.uk/listings/?lm=1 Spotify page with our new album: https://play.spotify.com/artist/0IUawLEHC2kB41H3NDQNYm
11. Really like this pic of the gig taken by our Nige (xilldx), such a happy pic
12. The Realist Lifeline is getting some good reviews on TalkBass and fits neatly under the bridge adjuster wheel. The BassMax is pretty much the most popular pickup for loud playing though as it seems more feedback proof than other piezos. You probably wouldn't go wrong with either
13. B&W pic from the gig, showing off the Ampeg Baby Bass
14. This chap - the founder of flamenco bass playing for those unfamilar (and despised by some flamenco aficionados as a result) - can swing with a pick and has amazing chordal abilities. Its a bit different so you may like or love it! In case interested he is playing his signature bass from Barcelona-based luthier Jerzy Drozd http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ZEEm2Ao6vt0
15. Thanks Ad - BTW, the album is now on Spotify too
16. I've only used it on one gig so far and the CMD121P combo was plenty loud. I know BCer PTB uses this combo for his Chicago blues and swing gigs as does PaulKing who is an ace slapper. Probably best to drop them a PM Laurence
17. I find Acoustic Image's amps are better than their cabs, not that the latter are bad, just not outstanding. The BigE is a lot better cab than anything AI offer, in my opinion. But as a combo, the Ten2 is a nifty thing for all but the loud gigs
18. Bump for a nice bass that was previously owned by me and before that by Gareth. Superb value at under 700 notes for an augmented US 62 RI
19.
what's the Big E 4X5 like?
TheRev (aka Dave) has a BigE 4x5 and described it, IIRC, as "all-conquering". I'll leave Roger to answer (as he owns my old BigE) as he has gigged it a fair bit now, I believe. My impression was that it is very "true" and creates a wide "sound field" with the vortex placement of the speakers (so the bass can be heard all over the stage as well as by the audience). I only sold as I think the benefits tend to get lost with very loud gigs, which are essentially what I play, so I've gone to a simple combo solution (Ten2 for small/mid sized gigs and Markbass CMD112P for loud ones). For a band with space for the DB to be heard (eg, a jazz trio, say) they are amazing cabs
20. 7. Clarky - probably something double bass-shaped as there will be plenty of fenders on display!
21.
I like the opener Clarky. Very nice
Thanks Nick
22. Hi all, in case interested our album is now downloadable from itunes and from Amazon (£7.49). Here's a link to the latter http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hearts-for-Judas/dp/B00DH5QP9A/ref=sr_shvl_album_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373528532&sr=301-1
23. The alternative feedback free solution is to order a mag pickup from Kent Armstrong or import one from Krivo in US. Obviously only if you have steel strings! Then you get the DB look, as much volume as you will ever need and a sound which bears a decent approximation to a DB (at the volumes you are talking I doubt the audience would ever know it wasn't a piezo)
24. Thanks Roberto! To be honest, there's minimal difference in tone and playability between Danny Thompson strings and Mittels bar the latter having a bit more growl. However I need to settle on one set for my flatback (my smaller bodied Kolstein has Spiro Weichs on), hence my vgc Mittels are FS
25. There's quite a few positive reviews on TalkBass from US players who have imported them from the UK to the US, all very positive about the quality and the customer service
