Sh*t, I have three fretless basses and two double basses. I really am in trouble

Old timers do get gigs with originals bands - I'm 49 and the rest of my band is between 26-34 years old. Age isn't the determinant of joining a good originals band. Not being a twat generally is

I can fully understand the gratification arguments for covers bands (and the money!) I remember my originals punk band playing at a Punkfest in 2009, playing well, doing our thang to a mildly appreciative audience. Next up is a '70s punk covers band that launches into London Calling, followed by Bodies and the audience went completely mental .... So far I have only ever played in originals bands (bar one cover with my last band Rattlin Bone of an obscure blues song) and it does give me a huge boost when you get complimented on a song that is all the band's own. To be fair I am lucky in my current band as it has some very good songwriters as well as two amazing (and photogenic, ahem) lady singers.

A propos of nothing in particular, here is a lovely performance of the haunting 'Shipbuilding' by Robert Wyatt. Wriiten by Clive Langer and Elvis Costello (who recorded a less beautiful version IMHO), it might not be a song that will resonate with the younger crowd but at the time of the Falklands War it was very harrowing and heartfelt. Just back and happy to report that the Jetsonics get better each time I see them (this is the third time I believe). They have a lot of gigs under their belts now and it shows in how close-knit they are on stage. Highly recommended!

Thanks to Mr Low End Bee for coming along last night - not the biggest crowd (I guess a freezing Thursday night doesn't tempt the punters out, and we had a lot of no-shows) but we played well and really enjoyed it
