1. Be careful with the Realist, it has a 'hot' output that doesn't work with some amps. Its why David Gage sells a 'padded cable' for it
2. Ed Friedland, the Bass whisperer, swears by his Genz Shuttle so your rig is fine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA8K-UXuAh4
3. My view (everyone is different in part as basses respond differently) The very best amplified sound (my bass only louder, as the jargon has it) is with an Ehrlund EAP, a triangle shaped contact mic for which BCer daflewis is the UK dealer, together with its preamp. A cool £300-odd. Plug into your normal electric rig with as clean a setting as poss (or in the effects return) and its wonderful Cheaper but still good sound - piezo wing pickup into a Fishman PlatPro EQ bass preamp. Loads of piezos but popular are K&K BassMax (quite bassy I find), the Shadow SH950 or very similar Underwood (BC'er bassace swears by these), or - for a slightly darker sound - the under-bridge-foot David Gage Realist copper pickup. The best piezo I have tried is the Full Circle but this requires swapping out a bridge adjuster and is expensive. Some people hate piezos as they can be a bit nasal and require careful EQing. If you get EQ right they sound pretty good to my ears. Depends on your budget but for a good start I would buy a PlatPro and a used Shadow/Underwood/BassMax. The Ehrlund is fantastic but a budget stretcher PS, whatever you do, get a preamp with a phase switch if possible and either through preamp or amp have reasonable frequency control as feedback can be a real bugger
4. Ah cool! Lawrence is a super guy to deal with. The Clarus head is superb. I have the single channel version in my Ten2 and occasionally regret not getting the 2 channel one
5. Looks lovely. Hours upon hours of fun await
6. Man, you have some nice basses! Is the PJ the custom shop special from 2012? - never seen one except on the Fender website. Our wateroftyne will be drooling over that one!
7. Hey Steve, glad that you have found your sound with Acoustic Image - wonderful amps/combos for DB. Which combo did you get? Contra or Ten2?
8. Thanks! Here it is being played upright in a jazz stylee (not me!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjQHbU-n1wU
9. Hey Kev, I WILL make one of your gigs soon but can't do this one. Hope its a good'un
10. And a very extensive review of the TB10 fretless (which is identical bar having a tube in the preamp) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKEtECsF8To
11.
That looks like a really interesting gig you've got now Clarky. The last one looked interesting too, you're getting some nice gigs.
Yep, its a really good band and very eclectic - a bit of blues, folk, gospel and flamenco all thrown into a sort of world music mix - quite hard to categorise. We sort of describe our selves as "gypsy pop"
12. ... I've just put mine up for sale in the Basses for sale forum. Link: http://basschat.co.u...top-bass-l1300/ * EDIT: THIS IS NOW SOLD * Given the new forum for sale layout I thought it might be frowned upon to have a separate FS listing in the DB/EUB for sale forum as well, hence flagging it up here Here's me playing it horizontally:
13. Here's a guy showing how it can be played upright in a 'heavy Western' style take (from the very excellent Phillious Williams): https://www.youtube....h?v=1bjPMgoUX94
14. I have owned this beautiful bass for a year or so, bought from Beedster. Its an ultra-high quality Takamine bass that delivers a very upright like tone and can even be played on a brass endpin (comes with the bass). The neck is heavily radius'd, like a double bass, and very chunky and it is wearing LaBella black nylon strings. Its in immaculate condition. I am after £1300 collected in London - it has a very heavy hard case and I have since acquired (for over £120) a padded, semi-rigid cello case which means it can be easily slung on back and taken to gigs/rehearsals. The bass will come with both cases hence I am after it collected (live nr Hammersmith, work nr Liverpool Street, rehearse in New Cross). Cash only, no trades please as I have enough bass and DB gear! The near-identical (bar slightly different preamp) TB10 is £2054 new at GAK (when in stock) which obviously doesn't include the gig-friendly cello case, so this is a net saving of more than £850 on new for the package Stock photo here: Close up showing how big the body is (not my bass but identical): Video of me playing the bass here:
15. As someone who has never knowingly heard a song by the Deftones which album would you recommend I check out?
16. Here's another Nige. €2100 or about £1800 new. You did good, hanging on to your one matey http://www.doctorbass.net/en/producto.asp?id=1000171925&idfam=1000166929
17. Had you put this one up FS first Harry I would have had this off you rather than the Micro, especially at the same price!
18. Lump in my throat? Think I would have been bawling my eyes out at that moment True legend
19. Excellent post Nige, I've seen over half a dozen London based BC bands (including Nige's band Kit Richardson) and also Burrito Bass' (aka Tim's) excellent non-London band Case Hardin, plus Pete Academy's Nearly Dan and BRX' Dick Venom. Enjoyed all of them So ... shameless plug ... if anyone's stuck for summat to do on Thursday 14th they could always wander over to the Half Moon in Putney to hear some "gypsy Fleetwood Mac" => http://www.timeandleisure.co.uk/whats-on/previews/2338-preview-all-the-queens-ravens.html
20.
Moved my rehearsal especially for you Mr C.
You are a gent, Adam. So - following Nige/silddx's 'call to arms' - anyone else fancy coming along to hear some "gypsy Fleetwood Mac" (ahem)? - see here http://www.timeandleisure.co.uk/whats-on/previews/2338-preview-all-the-queens-ravens.html

What flats?

My favourites are Pyramid Gold (as used by Grateful Dead etc in the late 60s/early 70s). They feel worn-in from the moment you open the packet whereas I find TI Flats and others need time to sound and feel their best. http://www.thomann.de/gb/pyramid_gold_flatwound_ebasssaiten.htm
22. £20 sent. Bl**dy good VFM
23. In order I have progressed from a death/thrash metal band to a 70s style punk band to playing double bass in a voodoo swamp blues band and now a gypsy pop band. Not bad going on the variety front in 8 years!
